There is more to the Philippine surfing scene than Siargao’s summer swells or Baler’s gigantic waves. The country has over 7,641 islands located in the Western Pacific, and with it many spots that could be deemed as a surfer’s paradise.

Some of the most underrated surfing spots can be seen in the Bicol Region, which is filled with beaches, big waves, and breathtaking views.

Here are but a few choice surfing spots to visit when in Camarines Norte, Sorsogon, and Catanduanes.

Bagasbas Beach, Camarines Norte

Bagasbas Beach is a paradise for surfers of all ages.
Barangay Bagasbas in Daet used to be a vast expanse of rice fields before it became known as the Surfing Capital of Bicol. Bagas means “rice” in Bicolano.

Bagasbas Beach, on the other hand, is a 5km stretch of gray-sand coast. Its seabed of pure sand makes it safe for beginners, and its expansive shores ensure that there is enough space for surfers to navigate the waves.

Despite being a public beach, the area is also well-maintained by Daet’s municipal office and volunteer groups.

When Lola Rosario “Sayong” Escandor needed people to guard her coconut trees sometime in 2009, she commissioned the help of local surfers. She allowed them to practice in her beach lot in exchange.

Out of gratitude, these surfers treated the ocean that was entrusted to them as their home and vowed to keep it pristine. Today, this group managed to grow into a community of environmental preservation and responsible tourism advocates.

Lola Sayong Eco-SurFarm is an eco-friendly campground and accommodation site managed by the local community of Gubat, Sorsogon.

This 5km surf camp implements strict rules for visitors: no partying, no smoking, no drinking, no bonfire, no speakers, and no unnecessary noise at 10 P.M., and no single-use plastics.

Any profit from the camp is used to develop and support educational programs for Gubat’s out-of-school youth. Through their ‘No school no surf’ policy, the community encourages children who want to learn surfing to attend school. The kids are provided educational assistance on academic projects as well as lodging.

The local community also protects sea turtles through their Conserve Pawikan Program, where they free pawikans trapped in the local fisherfolks’ nets to the ocean in exchange of rice or a cash allowance.

Aside from surfing, kayaking, night snorkeling, fishing, mangrove walk, and virtual farming are just some of the activities visitors can do here.

If Siargao has “Cloud 9,” Catanduanes has “Majestic” waves for its long-barrel surfs that break on Puraran’s reef in Baras.

This surf spot with cream-tinted shores became popular after photographer Warren Bolster featured it in the California-based Surfer Magazine in 1980.

Since then, enthusiasts from all over the world travel to Puraran for its waves. This made it the first tourist destination in the province. Prior to the pandemic, local and international surfing competitions were held here annually.

Beginners are also welcome to test their mettle on the calmer side of this 5km beach. Behind the picturesque coves and rock formations are smaller waves newbies can practice on.

And since not a lot of people go to this side of the country yet, signing up for lessons does not involve a long waiting time.

Families who bond over inspiring stories of the past and good food will find a home at Casa Simeon in Bacacay. It was built in 1920 by husband-and-wife Simeon and Beatrice Alparce.

This century-old bahay na bato was restored by their grandson Enrico Alparce Calleja into a specialty lodging.

The old house remained habitable over the years and defied the ravages of war, typhoons, and volcanic eruptions. Its architectural design is fortified with concrete stones and first-class wood that’s meant to withstand time.

They also have an in-house restaurant that serves Bicolano cuisines from the family’s heirloom recipes.

While you’re here, don’t forget to say hi to the casa’s resident dog, Bingo. He usually hangs out in the kitchen.

This five-kilometer beach strip is a playground for aquasport lovers.

Bagasbas Beach in Daet, Camarines Norte is among the earliest recorded Philippine surfing destinations and its consistent strong waves throughout the year make it an ideal surfing spot for beginners and pros.

The mighty waves come from the Pacific Ocean and land at Bagasbas’ powdery gray and dark brown sands. The surfing destination is rarely crowded, locals even say that you can have the entire stretch to yourself.

“We have waves perfect for surfing all year round. It is also ideal for all levels of surfers from beginner, to intermediate, to expert, ” says Bagasbas Surfers Club (BSC) founder Bless Lelis.

Bagasbas Surfers Club

Recently founded by Lelis in March 2021, the beach club has 65 members responsible for maintaining the beach area and providing lessons to aspiring surfers.

BSC together with Bagasbas Beach Cleaners under Daet’s Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office conducts weekly beach clean up every Sunday.

Bagasbas Surfers Club.
Prior COVID-19 pandemic, tourists mostly from European countries would stay in Bagasbas for 2-3 months just to become experts in surfing. “They’re suki (regulars) of Bagasbas,” says Lelis.

The club’s goal is to host regional and national surfing contests. “We want to invite surfers from all parts of the Philippines. Especially ones from Siargao, Zambales, La Union.”

Surf Safely!

Bagasbas beach is safe even for non-surfers since it’s a beach break.

“Beach break means the sand is fine, without reefs or rocks. So if you fall from your board or get wiped out by the wave, there’s less chance of getting injured,” Lelis explains.

Bless Lelis, founder of Bagasbas Beach Club.
She also shares that Philippines’ surfing capital, Siargao, is a reef break. This means that while most of its beaches offer fantastic waves, the bottom is filled with corals.

Surfing Dos and Don’ts

BSC offers surfing lessons for beginners. The hourly rate is at Php 400 per person and this already includes board rental. Tourists are expected to undergo a 3-minute land lesson before instructors allow them to surf.

“During land lessons, this is where we reiterate safety measures. We also instruct tourists the proper way of holding the board, and when to lie. Proper timing is also taught, especially when you are about to stand on the board. And of course, the right time to jump if you feel out of balance,” Lelis explains.

Nightlife after surfing

Tourists may try the local vodka called Barik. It is made from softened branches of nipa that were cooked, boiled, and distilled through firewood. Nipa palm is abundant in both the river line and coastal areas of Bagasbas.

Bagasbas Beach is an 18-minute tricycle ride from Daet Municipal Hall. Entry to the beach is free and locals only request for tourists to maintain its cleanliness.

Party drinking and smoking are prohibited within the beach area and only allowed at bars and designated areas.

Known as the “Queen Pineapple,” Formosa grows abundantly in Bicol. It has made Camarines Norte as one of the major pineapple exporters in the Philippines.

Formosa is also recognized as the Philippines’ sweetest pineapple with its sucrose content higher than varieties commonly grown in the country. Department of Agriculture – High Value Crops Development Program (DA-HVCDP) attests to this.

Pineapples have become a summer staple due to its refreshing and delightfully sweet flavor. Here are more facts about the Formosa Pineapple.

Pineapple Roots

Unlike other varieties, Formosa has a distinct sweetness, subtle aroma, crisp flesh, and less fibrous pulp. The acidity of the pineapple is also a bit subdued.

The fruit is smaller compared to commonly grown variants and weighs at around one to two kilograms each.

Pineapple production is a consequence of Spanish migration and commerce to the Philippines.

In Bicol, pineapple was first grown in San Lorenzo Ruiz, Camarines Norte and was only considered as a backyard crop until locals realized its potential and expanded to larger plantations.

“It all starts with farmers looking for suitable sites that meet climatic and soil requirements. It can be intercropping or between coconut trees, or in an open field,” Basud Agricultural Technologist Elias Emata shares.

Then farmers would proceed with distancing, placing each seedling in a 60 x 50 cm area. Once seeds are planted, it goes through weed management, fertilizer application, and flower induction.

“It takes 16 to 18 months, almost two years to produce Formosa,” says Emata.

“Pinya Mo, Benta Mo”

Through their local government, a program was established where farmers would have access to direct marketing and travel to an outlet outside the province such as Manila.

Basud Agricultural Technologist Elias Emata.
“This is to help pineapple farmers because based on my experience, trading has been monopolized by businessmen. Some farmers don’t have an idea on the cost of Formosa Pineapple outside Camarines Norte,” shares Emata.

Within the province, Formosa is priced at around Php8 to Php10. When transported, the reselling price becomes Php25 to Php30.

This program eliminates middlemen and enhances the awareness and skills of farmers in pineapple trading. “It’s our way of helping the farmers.”

Farmers will directly transact with the buyers in the metro and will be given logistic support such as trucks, gas, and drivers.

Pineapple Exports

An organization of cooperatives and farmer associations vitalized the processing of pineapple by-products.

“When farmers have extra produce, they can bring it to our cooperative so we can still use it and it won’t be put to waste,” says Emata.

Some Formosa by-products are wine, vinegar, juice drink, puree, jams, pineapple tart, pie, dried pineapple, etc.

Major cooperatives in Camarines Norte include Labo Progressive Multipurpose Cooperative, San Lorenzo Women and Families Association, and Caayunan Multipurpose Cooperative.

“There are lots of advantages and products we can produce from a single Formosa,” says Emata. “Even for clothing. We use pineapple fiber for Barong, Kimono, and more.”

Pinyasan Festival

To honor Formosa and the hardworking Bicolano farmers who dedicate their time and expertise to grow them, Camarines Norte annually holds Pinyasan Festival every 3rd to 4th week of June.

It definitely takes an entire village, or region to produce a fruit that is internationally recognized as one of the sweetest.

While Formosa is distinct for its taste, the grit of local farmers behind each pineapple strengthens the reason as to why it’s a must-try.

“I’m proud that Camarines Norte gets to be known for Formosa, that visitors would be curious to try once they are here,” says Emata.
