From trekking to spelunking, Solong Eco Park offers a lot of activities for adventurers.

This accessible 6.5 hectare gem opened in 2017, and is just 19-minutes away from Bicol International Airport and is fit for adrenaline junkies. Tourists can witness great summit views at the peak of Solong Hill then examine different rock formations and more at Solong Crystal Cave.

“Aside from the hills, cave, and overnight camping activities, we are an agri-tourism farm site. We have bee, goat, and duck farms. We also have different plantations,” says Solong Eco Park Admin and Regional Tour Guide Andy Palmiano.

Solong Hilltop Trekking

Reaching Solong Hill’s summit requires a 30-minute trek. Since the trail is a bit slippery and muddy, the staff reused tires as stairs leading to the view deck. “There were around 500 tires recycled for this,” Palmiano shares.

Upon reaching the hilltop, it gives a 360-view of Albay’s famed 3M or Magayon Trio which are Mt. Mayon, Mt. Masaraga, and Mt. Malinao. All of them visible amid Quitinday Hills.

Solong Hill is 60 meters above sea level and sometimes temperature drops below 20 degree celsius according to Palmiano. “If the weather is good, best time to visit would be around 7 A.M. There is a high chance that you will get to see the Mayon Volcano and appreciate the panoramic view.”

Mayon Volcano amid Quitinday Hills. Photo by Playground Films PH courtesy of the Department of Tourism.

Solong Crystal Cave

Inside the cave, different minerals and rock formations can be seen. Tourists will be guided and educated about rock formations, calcites, and crystals such as stalactites and stalagmites, even flowstones. There are also fruit bats and huntsman spiders inside.

The cave is approximately 1,000 square meters and the allowable area for tour exploration is as far as 150 meters. Beyond this point is already restricted as mandated by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

Expect warmer temperature upon descent as there’s only one entrance and exit. “The gateway to Solong Cave is only one that’s why there’s less air circulation inside,” Palmiano explains.

Prior to cave exploration, the tour guide will provide a five-minute briefing at the entrance point where a 50-year old Balete tree also stands. The tour guide will reiterate the safety measures and dos and don’ts inside the cave, including a reminder not to touch the crystals.

Inside Solong Crystal Cave. Photo by Playground Films PH courtesy of the Department of Tourism.

Different minerals such as fluoride and calcium quartz crystal can be seen surrounding several rock formations.

There are flowstones, dripping stones, but the most notable would be the fossil imprints. “The imprints of seashells somehow indicate that maybe this cave, around thousands of years ago, was actually underwater,” Palmiano shares.

Solong Eco Park as Agri-Tourism Site

Solong Eco Park also serves as an agri-farm tourism site. Since there are more than 3,000 fruit-bearing trees within the park, they offer a “Pick and Bring Home” program where tourists may harvest fruits and vegetables such as dragonfruit, soursoups, bananas, water spinach, taro, moringa, pineapple, lemon, cacao, pili, and more.

“We just continue to plant and plant more,” Lilybeth Ventura Marino, co-owner of Solong Eco Park shares, who describes herself as a farmer and nature lover. “Everything that we consume, we get here.”

In terms of agri-tourism, Marino shares that tourists are often amazed by cacao harvesting and processing so they offer cacao and tablea tasting. Solong Eco Park also has a bee farm where they showcase honey harvesting.

Solong Eco Park Co-Owner Lilybeth Ventura Marino.
Aside from Solong Eco Park being a learning site and tourist destination, the park uplifts the community by providing jobs to locals. “I believe farming doesn’t need any educational requirements like other jobs out there. As long as you know how to sow, take care of plants, you’ll find a sense of purpose,” says Marino.

Tour Details

Solong Eco Park is definitely a 360 adventure spot worth visiting for nature lovers. “At the top, visitors can take a picture at the Bali-inspired bird’s nest. But we actually call that a portal. Because the highest peak is actually the end part of the cave below,” Palmiano explains.

Solong Eco Park is open everyday including holidays from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Entrance fee is Php50 per head with additional environmental fee of Php20.

For guided tours and assistance, tourists may coordinate through Solong Eco Park’s Facebook page or at +632 9472199949 and +632 916920735

The Solong Eco Park is a 6.5-hectare land known as the “Mini Bohol of Bicol” because of the resemblance of its grass-coated mounds to the famous Chocolate Hills in Visayas. In Camalig, these are known as the Solong Hills.

To reach its viewing deck, tourists must hike for 15 to 20 minutes. The trek is easy enough to be done by kids and senior citizens. Recycled car tires make up most of the trail to assist trekkers.

This park is also home to the Solong Crystal Cave. It used to be a mining site. Now, it’s an eco-tourism destination. Children seven years old and above are allowed to explore the cave as long as they are accompanied by an adult.

The park also has a cacao farm, bee farm, communal garden, and a man made forest bridge. Entrance fee is Php40.

Kawa-Kawa Hill and Natural Park

Families who bond over inspiring stories of the past and good food will find a home at Casa Simeon in Bacacay. It was built in 1920 by husband-and-wife Simeon and Beatrice Alparce.

This century-old bahay na bato was restored by their grandson Enrico Alparce Calleja into a specialty lodging.

The old house remained habitable over the years and defied the ravages of war, typhoons, and volcanic eruptions. Its architectural design is fortified with concrete stones and first-class wood that’s meant to withstand time.

They also have an in-house restaurant that serves Bicolano cuisines from the family’s heirloom recipes.

While you’re here, don’t forget to say hi to the casa’s resident dog, Bingo. He usually hangs out in the kitchen.

Their menu consists of farm-to-table food made from 100 percent organic ingredients.

Towering at a height of 8,077 feet above sea level, Mayon Volcano is one of the Philippines’ natural gems.

It is internationally recognized for its perfect cone shape and is also considered the country’s most active volcano with more than 50 recorded eruptions since 1616. Mayon Volcano is also featured on the back of the 100-peso bill.

Beyond appreciating its beauty, Mayon offers exciting activities fit for thrill junkies.

Hop on ATVs or bikes and experience thrilling adventures by driving through rough terrains surrounding Mayon. You can also try the zipline with the world-famous volcano as your backdrop.

Your Brother ATV Adventure

Established in 2006, Your Brother Travel and Tours offers ATV drive through 18-kilometer of muddy terrain and volcanic dirt roads.

Tourists can choose among 4 trails and destinations, the cheapest and shortest one would be Mayon ATV Challenge which costs Php599 for single-seater ATVs then Php1,500 for double-seater ATVs.

Next trail is the Lava Front for Php1,800 to Php3,500 followed by Mayon Advance Trail at Php1,999 to Php4,000. Lastly, Mayon ATV Summit costs Php6,500 to Php 8,500.

ATV Mayon Summit is the most challenging trail and closest to Mayon Volcano. Approximately, this trail takes 4-5 hours. “This is the ATV challenge that Hollywood celebrity Zac Efron chose when he visited Albay,” Chan adds.

Upon choosing which trail to traverse, tourists will go through a briefing and will be taught ATV basics. Controlling the vehicle is straightforward, the switches and handlebars allow you to simply move forward and backward.

“All of our ATVs are automatic so it’s easy to use. If you have questions, just raise your hands. We will also teach you hand signals such as when to proceed, when to stop, and when to let guides go first,” says Your Brother Travel and Tours co-owner Junjhon Chan.

Automatic ATVs offered around Albay are beginner-friendly. Photo by Playground Films PH courtesy of the Department of Tourism.

After the briefing, gear up for a 5 to 10-minute ATV test drive. Guides will inform you if you are ready and familiar enough with the controls.

It is highly suggested to bring a dry bag to keep your phones, gadgets, wallet, and other things from getting wet. Since there are streams to cross, it’s also recommended to wear light clothing paired with slippers or sandals because you will likely get wet driving through muddy paths.

The Mayon trail is a mix of rough, potholed, and uneven surfaces. Expect to go through fallen volcanic rocks, rugged soils, gullies, and rivers. The guides will be there to assist tourists all throughout, so no need to worry if you get stuck or if something happened with your ATV.

“It’s a natural trail. We didn’t change any of the pathways so expect a bumpy ride,” Chan instructs. “Overtaking is strictly prohibited for safety measures. The guides should always lead the drive.”

Zip Line at Black Lava Wall

Right after your ATV adventure, spice up your Mayon experience by taking a zip line at the Mayon Black Lava Wall.

In 2006, when Mayon Volcano erupted, it formed a high pile of lava rocks. Now that the lava rocks have completely solidified, locals offer an adventure where tourists will need to climb to the top of the lava rocks then descend through a zipline.

The zipline costs around Php300 per person.

Mayon Volcano’s Black Lava Wall.
360 Bike Trail

In Legazpi, local cyclists are known for taking on the Mayon 360 challenge where they bike a total circumference of 86.5 kilometers around the foot of Mayon Volcano.

“We plan to organize and promote bike tourism in Region 5,” says DOT 5 Regional Director Herbie Aguas. At the moment, there are no bicycles for rent in the area but the local government is looking into investing to entice more visitors.

Bike around Mayon Volcano.
Your Brother Tribal Village

Right beside the ATV trail is the Your Brother Tribal Village. This unique accommodation offers a native-esque kubo style glamping ideal for adventurers who just finished exploring the activities around Mayon.

Rates start at Php1,300 good for two persons. This is an air-conditioned room with access to a communal bathroom for men and women. The Single Hut or Cabana Bungalow is at Php1,600 good for two persons which includes its own bathroom.

At night, the hotel can also host a bonfire upon request.

Mention any of Bicol’s six provinces would conjure images of coconut-based, creamy, and fiery dishes. But the region is much more than its rich and spicy food. It has a wealth of gastronomic delights that you shouldn’t pass up while you’re there.

Bicol Express

Made with pork, bagoong (shrimp paste), tomatoes, onions, green chilies, and gata (coconut milk), there’s probably no other dish that’s more Bicolano than this.

Bicol Express has become so popular that it has found its way into the kitchen of the humblest karinderya to the poshest restaurants across the country.

Bicol Express. Photo by Playground Films PH courtesy of the Department of Tourism.

Its name was derived from the Bicol Express train (Philippine National Railways) that ran from Tutuban, Manila to Legazpi, Albay. Fun fact: The dish first became popular in Malate and was invented by Cecilia “Tita Cely” Villanueva Kalaw.

Villanueva Kalaw was a Laguna native who spent most of her childhood in Naga where she learned how to cook local dishes.

Taking inspiration from the region’s gulay na lada (vegetables with chili), she gave the dish her own spin by adding pork belly and bagoong while keeping two Bicolano staple ingredients: gata and chilis.

Usually eaten with steamed rice, iterations of Bicol Express feature chicken, fish, or seafood instead of pork.

An order of Bicol Express at 1st Colonial Grill in Legazpi costs Php355, while you can wolf down a serving for about Php80 in an eatery or karinderya.

Laing

One of Bicolandia’s most famous dishes is made of gata mixed with shredded gabi or taro leaves, siling labuyo (chili pepper), garlic, ginger, and sometimes, tanglad (lemongrass) and bagoong.

Some mix pork or fish bits, but Laing can stand well on its own.

Similar to Laing, Pinangat is another dish with a coconut milk base. These are then steamed over low heat in gata and spices.
