The agri-industrial area of Iloilo is found in the central part of the province. Aside from sugar, agricultural products such as corn, rice, bananas, and pineapples can be found here. Iloilo has one of the highest number of farms among the Western Visayas provinces.

The Farming Life

Iloilo’s Farm Circuit is a farm tourism promotion that gives tourists a glimpse of life on the farm. It is an experience worth trying to see how local farm products are produced and made into mouth-watering delicacies.

A Certified Organic Farm

Since 2011, the Orchard Valley in Pavia has been the first and only certified organic farm in Iloilo, recognized by the Negros Island Certification Services. The Orchard Valley farmland stretches behind the Tigum River, an ideal site for visitors to learn about organic farm practices. This is also Orchard Valley farmland’s contribution to the promotion of responsible tourism.

Divided into sections which include a vegetable garden, fruit trees, livestock, and an organic fertilizer production area, visitors may join in harvesting fresh organic vegetables and fruits in season. These homegrown vegetables and herbs are also available for those who may wish to purchase. The produce from the organic farm are supplied to hotels, restaurants, cafes, coffee shops, and selected groceries and supermarkets.

Orchard Valley grows a lot of malunggay (moringa) trees cropped with organic fertilizers such as animal manure from the farm’s organic dairy cattle, chickens, and other livestock animals. Aside from selling malunggay leaves to supermarkets, the leaves also serve as feeds to milking cows for higher milk production. The dried and powdered leaves are used in the making of a local delicacy called malunggay pan de sal.

A resident chef prepares salads and other dishes with homegrown produce and products such as kesong puti or white cheese and salad greens. Visitors may also try their fried mushrooms, deep-fried root crops, tempura camote leaves, organic yogurt, and sumptuous desserts.

Orchard Valley is a learning site where students train in organic agriculture. They are taught how to ferment plant and fruit juices to be used for the promotion of plant growth and protection from pests and other plant diseases. Aside from plant care, the students are also given instructions on the care of free-range chickens for eggs and meat, native pigs, and rabbits, along with manure fertilizing and vermicomposting.

Farm and Resort – The Best of Both Worlds

The Damires Hills Tierra Verde Leisure Farm in Sta. Barbara is a 45-hectare farm with 29 hectares dedicated to a natural forest and for growing crops. It is built around the natural surroundings of verdant hills and forests allowing birds to freely flit and sing amid lush greenery and local flora. It features an aquaponics greenhouse with around 2,500 tilapia fingerlings in a 35-square meter pool. The pool water is recirculated to supply water and nutrients for growing lettuce.

A Heavenly Farm

Garin Farm’s Heaven on Earth is an interesting pilgrimage resort. It is the only resort in the Philippines that combines agriculture, leisure, and a pilgrimage. Garin Farm showcases viable agricultural livelihood plant and animal culture, product processing, and a zero-waste management program that creates a balanced plant and animal coexistence. Apart from this, the zero-waste management program uses composting and biogas with recycling as the highlight of their Mini Urban Backyard Scrap Garden. The sprawling area houses forest trees, fruits trees, various vegetables, and flowering plants along with farm animals.

Photo courtesy of the Department of Tourism.

The entrance is a welcoming canopy covered in vines. At the restaurant area, you can have a glorious view of a manmade lake and witness hundreds of white doves during feeding time. The restaurant offers a host of Garin Farm organic products such as organic coconut sugar, coco vinegar, virgin coconut oil, fresh coconut water, bananas, farm-fresh eggs from chickens, ducks and quails, fresh cow, carabao and goat milk, processed meats, homemade ice cream, fresh fruit juices, and other local snacks.

The Hydroponics Building has plants growing in a multi-level system without the use of soil. Indigenous microorganisms are prepared in the probiotics area. There are over 26 farm animal buildings and over 33 vegetable gardens using organic fertilizer and various watering systems for pesticide-free produce. The Agro-Forestry Building propagates forest tree and fruit tree seedlings.

Across the restaurant is a long flight of steps that leads to Heaven on Earth. This area symbolizes what one will have to go through in life before entering the Pearly Gates. At the top is the Dark Meditation Tunnel where you will blindly walk through a long dark hall. This is deemed as the moment in life where a person recalls past sins and repents for them.

At the end of the tunnel, a blinding light awaits, representing what entering Heaven could possibly look and feel like. While in this area, you will be welcomed by angels and saints in the form of bright white statues, with a white cross as the focal point. Accompanied by Handel’s Messiah in the background, this is what they call Heaven on Earth.

The Department of Tourism is embarking on strengthened efforts towards sustainability by enhancing existing destinations and developing new circuits that highlight sustainable management practices and involve local communities.

As tourism has a multiplier effect—creating not only jobs but also livelihood opportunities through offering of goods and services—sustainability ensures the preservation of destinations, thriving of culture and traditions, and inclusive growth. Moreover, as sustainability measures often involve the community, the locals themselves become part of the meaningful experience of their hometown’s visitors.

Here are the top sustainable tourism destinations for your next adventures in the Philippines and the communities that you will encounter on an unforgettable journey.

The eco-friendly locals of Mt. Hamiguitan and Mt. Apo in Davao

The Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary in Davao Oriental is Mindanao’s first and only UNESCO World Heritage Site, with attractions such as a pygmy forest where trees are stunted to only about 4.5 feet in height. There are 1,974 endemic plant and animal species that have been identified so far, including carnivorous pitcher plants, the iconic Philippine Eagle, Philippine cockatoo, and golden crowned flying foxes. The locals are engaged not only in tourism but also in sustainable livelihood programs. One of these is beekeeping using the native stingless bee species called ‘kiyot’. This also helps with pollinating and protecting Mt. Hamiguitan’s vegetation.

The Mount Apo Natural Park is home to 272 bird species, 111 of which are endemic, including the Philippine Eagle which is the largest in the world. The mountain is also inhabited by several indigenous groups: the Manobos, Bagobos, and Klata who consider it as a sacred mountain. They perfectly demonstrate how to coexist in harmony with the environment. Trek porters are equipped by the local tourism offices to share their knowledge of the mountain and its conservation.

The artisans of Ilocos, Panay Island, Eastern Visayas, and Central Mindanao

The women of Ilocos, particularly in the towns of Paoay, Vigan, Pinili, down to the towns of Santiago in Ilocos Sur and Bangar in La Union have been weaving from their homes since pre-Hispanic times. Their hand-loomed Inabel fabric, made from cotton blends is made into blankets, table covers, and even apparel, such as bags, shoes, and face masks for the new normal, with traditional designs that have been passed down through generations.

Panay Island also has a proud tradition of weaving, with several weaving communities across the island. In Aklan, they dexterously weave the fibers of the piña or Red Bisaya pineapple plant into delicate-looking cloth made into home decor and even formal apparel. Aklanon weavers are known for their piña and silk cloth creations that are embroidered with floral designs while the weavers of Iloilo and Antique are known for employing the suk-suk or inlaid weft technique in hablon and patadyong cloth.

The surfing communities of La Union, Baler, Siargao, Surigao del Sur and Eastern Samar

The surfing hotspots of the Philippines have produced not only a burgeoning tourism industry but also world-class local surfers. Those living in the islands have picked up the sport and the waters of La Union, Baler, Siargao, Surigao del Sur and Eastern Samar have increasingly seen more locals on their boards. These friendly Filipino surfers are the embodiment of the laidback local surfing lifestyle and are also staunch advocates of caring for their marine environment.

The culinarians of Iloilo City, Bacolod, Zamboanga City, and Davao City

Visiting the different regions of the Philippines is a taste trip, with each province contributing richly to the food map of the country, with recipes that make use of what is easily available in their locality. A cultural awareness of these dishes and the resulting food tourism ensures that not only the recipes are handed down to the next generation but heirloom produce will continue being planted by the local farmers.

Iloilo city is considered as one of the food capitals of the Philippines, with flavorful delicacies such as bowls of La Paz Batchoy noodles and Molo Soup. Negros Occidental is called the Sugar Bowl of the Philippines for its fields of sweet sugarcane. Among their preferred dishes for guests especially those visiting its capital city, Bacolod are Inasal (chicken grilled over hot coals), Piaya (unleavened flatbread filled with muscovado sugar), and Kansi or beef shank with bone marrow cooked in broth flavored with a local souring agent called Batwan.

Seafood abounds in Zamboanga, and their must-try dishes include ingredients such as a crustacean locally called Curacha, Imbao or mangrove clams, snails called Kulo, and Lato — a seaweed that resembles small green grapes, or commonly known as green caviar. Davao is known for its fruits, ranging from pineapples, bananas, sweet pomelos, and the infamous durian.

The Philippines is a sunny country rich in tropical flora and fauna. Adventures await the different islands to bring visitors closer to nature, with breathtaking vistas from verdant mountaintops and calming waves in the clear blue seas.

With its focus on building a sustainable, resilient, and inclusive tourism industry, the Department of Tourism has developed new products in different regions highlighting each area’s ecological wonders.

Enjoy the ultimate nature adventures as the perfect getaway from the busy urban life.

Here are some experiences that await in the Philippines’ beautiful eco-parks.

Take a subterranean boat ride

The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park in Palawan is a popular tourist site that showcases the rich biodiversity of a mountain-to-sea system. This majestic 22-hectare eco-park that is protected by the government and cared for by the local community is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list and is one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature.

One of the popular activities is a boat ride through the cave system that comprises the Puerto Princesa Underground River. Boatmen take visitors safely through the darkness of the long cave system, with stalactites and stalagmites forming a limestone landscape illuminated by the light attached to visitors’ hardhats.

This National Park is unique in that several ecosystems thrive in the pristine beauty of its mangrove forests in the Bay along with the flora and fauna of the caves and surrounding hardwood forest.

Experience bamboo forest bathing

The Bamboo eco-park in Baguio City’s St. Francis Xavier Seminary showcases several species of bamboo lined up to create its picture-perfect pathways. There is a feeling of serenity as one traverses the quiet red-fenced winding paths that encourage meditation among its benches that are placed strategically to offer calming views.

As it is located at an actual seminary, visitors have to maintain silence, with classes and Masses being held not far off. This makes the bamboo park an even more ideal place to de-stress. It is a beautiful place to commune with nature amid the cool climate of this mountainous region.

Bamboo eco-park.
Picnic among pine trees

The Bucari Pine Forest in Iloilo offers rugged highland adventures among pine trees. It is ideal for travelers who want to enjoy a bracing 45-minute hike in cool mountain air to reach the Masinga Viewing Deck and be rewarded with amazing views.

Explore the verdant hills through a footpath to discover waterfalls and meet with locals who are engaged in agriculture. There are picnic sheds that are available at the Tabionan Campsite, where one can also pitch a tent with the help of local caretakers and wait for the fireflies to come out at night.

Be a giant among trees

The Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary in Davao Oriental is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is a must-visit for nature lovers. It is a sanctuary for a wide variety of flora and fauna species – eight of which are found there. It is home to critically endangered trees, plants, and the iconic Philippine Eagle and Philippine Cockatoo.

Travelers can trek through a forest of centuries-old indigenous hardwood trees whose growth is stunted by the mineral rich volcanic soil. The average height of the trees, some of which have branches where orchids flourish, is at 4.5 feet. Locals serve as mountain guides, who are quick to point out interesting plants along the paths and help visitors spot the shy woodland animals. Before exploring the sanctuary, it is necessary to secure approval from the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB). A regulatory fee that supports conservation and protection of the area is charged upon entry.

Rock out in nature

Masungi Georeserve is a conservation area in Rizal Province that combines nature with extreme adventures among its rocky landscape. There are two routes that can be taken by trekkers. The Discovery Trail brings guests to the conservation area and come up close with the natural rock formations in the terrain. It features a walk through suspended bridges and the opportunity to take a daring group photo on a spiderweb that serves as a viewing platform for the Laguna de Bay.

Help save the sea turtles

While San Juan in La Union is known for its surfing, its beaches are also home to sea turtles such as the Olive Ridley that go ashore to lay their eggs. They have started to lay eggs further inland, so humans have to help the baby turtles hatch and return safely to the sea.

The Turtle Project, which is also known as Project Curma, has initiatives such as beach cleanups and a turtle release activity from the eggs that they rescue and care for in their hatchery. Volunteers are needed to help release thousands of baby turtles every hatching season.

This awesome experience helps to emphasize the value of keeping our seas clean and protecting the valuable biodiversity of marine life.

These beautiful islands provide the perfect backdrop to create more wonderful memories, and couples are sure to fall in love all over again not only with each other, but also with the Philippines.

Long Beach, San Vicente, Palawan

At a 14.7 kilometer stretch, the longest white-sand beach in the Philippines is also the second-longest in Southeast Asia. Take a romantic sunset stroll on the gorgeous shores of Long Beach. Enjoy the laid-back rural vibe at the beach and lounge lazily on the sand while gazing at the undisturbed view of the horizon. Cool off at the clear, turquoise waters or head out to the majestic Pamuayan Falls where you can traipse into the forests for a glimpse of the rich flora and fauna of the area. You can also go island-hopping via a short boat ride to discover other hidden gems of San Vicente.

Bantayan Island, Cebu

Located at Cebu’s northernmost tip is Bantayan Island. This emerging destination is full of beautiful spots to have your couple photos taken. Some of the attractions that offer unforgettable moments and make dramatic backdrops are the secluded Paradise Beach and Virgin Island, the Obo-Ob Mangrove Garden with its rustic bamboo bridge, the Kota Park Pier, and the Kinatarkan Lighthouse. For a taste of history, visit the centuries-old St. Peter and Paul Parish Church made of coral stones, and for a taste of local Cebuano cuisine, look for restaurants that offer Sutukil or grilled seafood from the catch of the day.

People are naturally curious and are just itching to explore different cultures around the world. According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), it’s why world heritage sites such as the Banks of the Seine in Paris, the Statue of Liberty in New York, the Acropolis in Athens, and the Great Wall of China attract many tourists from all over the world.

In the Philippines, we have nine properties in the UNESCO World Heritage List of our own. (Four of these properties, however, are grouped under one name, Baroque Churches of the Philippines.)

These sites are “of outstanding universal value” and meet at least one out of 10 selection criteria. They are as follows:

Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras (Cordillera Administrative Region)

Inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1995, the Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras showcase Ifugao industry. It is one of the few places in the country that show no evidence of being influenced by colonial cultures.

UNESCO describes it as a living cultural landscape of unparalleled beauty “epitomizing the absolute blending of the physical, socio-cultural, economic, religious, and political environment.”

The amphitheater-like Batad Cluster is one of the five clusters of the Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The entire landscape itself is quite extensive, and are located in the remote corners of the Cordillera mountain range. But UNESCO only has its most intact and impressive clusters inscribed on its list:

(1) the Nagacadan cluster in the municipality of Kiangan, which appears as two distinct ascending rows of terraces bisected by a river; (2) the Hungduan cluster, which resembles a spider web; (3) the central Mayoyao cluster, where the terraces are woven into traditional farmers’ houses and granaries; (4) the Bangaan cluster that backdrops a typical Ifugao traditional village; and (5) the Batad cluster, which features amphitheater-like semi-circular terraces with a village at its base.

The most popular to tourists are the Bangaan and Batad clusters in Banaue. Traveling to these terraces requires hiking or trekking, and the best months to visit are from June to July, or October to November.

Trip Quest Travel and Tours offers a two day-one Night Banaue Package, which includes a hike to the Batad cluster and Tappiyah Falls. You can also visit the Banaue Rice Terraces view point where you can also buy local souvenirs and delicacies.

Before heading home, you will also visit the Kiangan Shrine, a native Ifugao house-inspired shrine that commemorates the surrender of General Tomoyuki Yamashita to the Filipino-American forces. He was the highest commander of the Japanese Imperial Army in the Philippines.

You will also get to go to the Ifugao Museum, which houses the notable local works from woodcarvings to Ibaloy artifacts.

This 2D1N Banaue Package costs Php8,400/head for a group of five (5) persons. It includes overnight accommodation at Banaue Hotel with breakfast, all applicable fees, a DOT-accredited tour guide, travel insurance, and roundtrip transfers to and from Baguio. Roundtrip transfers to and from Manila can also be requested for an additional charge of Php850/head.

If you wish to include a visit to Sagada and explore its mountain valleys, rice fields, limestone caves, and waterfalls, there is also a 3 Days-2 Nights Banaue-Sagada tour for Php11,000/head for a group of five. For other options and customized tours, Trip Quest Travel and Tours can be reached via email at tripquest.tours@gmail.com or through these numbers +639178555685 and +639985814025.

How to get there:

Take a bus from Manila to Banaue, which is an eight to 11-hour ride. You can also take a flight from Manila to Cauayan Airport in Isabela, which takes only a little over an hour. But from this airport, you will need to take a 3.5-hour land journey to Banaue. Transport can also be arranged with your local tour operator.

Paoay Church (Ilocos Norte, Region I)

Among the country’s properties inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List is called the Baroque Churches of the Philippines. A group of four centuries-old churches, their style of building and design was adapted to the physical conditions in the country.

Inscribed in 1993, the UNESCO cites the four churches as outstanding examples of the Philippine interpretation of the Baroque style. They “represent the fusion of European church design and construction with local materials and decorative motifs to form a new church-building tradition.”

One of the properties is the Church of San Agustín in Paoay, Ilocos Norte. More commonly known as Paoay Church, it looms large because of its 24 enormous buttresses on all sides—a feature that makes it earthquake-proof.

Take a trip back in time at Calle Crisologo, which is part of the Historic City of Vigan.
Its facade is a mix of gothic and baroque, a fusion of Spanish, Chinese, and Filipino influences. The niches on top of the pillars and buttresses suggest Javanese influence.

To the right of the church is a three-story belltower made of coral stone. It used to be the Katipuneros’ observation post during the revolt against the Spaniards and by the Filipino guerillas during World War II.

Historic City of Vigan (Ilocos Sur, Region I)

Vigan was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999 for its unique culture and townscape. It is described as “the most intact example in Asia of a planned Spanish colonial town, established in the 16th century.”

Its main architecture is Hispanic but infused with Chinese, Ilocano, and Filipino elements, which is unique to the region. In 2014, Vigan was also selected as one of the New 7 Wonder Cities of the World.

The whole of Vigan was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Site covering 28.88 square kilometers, three major plazas—Plaza Salcedo, Plaza Burgos, and Plaza Trese Martires—and a total of 246 ancestral houses and structures.

Its major attraction is Calle Crisologo, which is lined with cobblestone and preserved ancestral houses of affluent Filipino-Chinese families. Located on the ground floor of these grand houses are shops that offer Vigan’s best products. These include crafts and delicacies like hand-woven abel textiles, and jewelry.

Some of the old houses have also been converted into restaurants and accommodations.

Santa Maria Church (Ilocos Sur, Region I)

The Nuestra Señora dela Asuncion Church is another of the baroque churches that was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is more commonly known as the Santa Maria Church, located in the municipality of the same name in Ilocos Sur.

The construction of the church started in 1765. Its thick walls made of bricks and mortar were reinforced with huge buttresses. Beside it is a belfry that was also used as a watchtower in the Spanish colonial period.

The Sta. Maria Church in Ilocos Sur. Photo courtesy of the Department of Tourism.

The church is situated on top of a hill and can be reached through a stairway of 85 steps. The first thing you will notice on your way up is a relief of the Our Lady of Assumption atop a tree.

This is a retelling of the story of how the statue of the Virgin Mary would periodically disappear in its former location. It would then be found on a guava tree perched on the knoll where the church now stands. Once on top, you will have a sweeping view of the town.

When visiting the Santa Maria Church, consider including other nearby destinations in your itinerary. Happy Juanderer’s Ilocos Sur Adventourismo is a six to eight-hour day tour package that will bring you to the Santa Maria Church.

San Agustin Church (Manila)

Officially known as the Church of the Immaculate Conception of San Agustin, this is also included in UNESCO’s list of Baroque structures. It is situated inside the walled city of Intramuros in Manila.

The church made of adobe stones was completed in 1607. It used to have two bell towers, but the one on its right side collapsed during a strong earthquake and was permanently removed after.

The church was witness to many significant events in history, especially since Intramuros was the seat of political and religious power during colonial times. During the Battle of Manila in 1945, the church remained standing even as other structures in Intramuros were reduced to rubbles.

What sets it apart from the three other Baroque churches is its interior, particularly the intricate retablo or altars and the tromp l’oeil style paintings on the ceiling. The church also houses a museum of Spanish artifacts, statues, church ornaments, and paintings.

The Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park was one of the first properties in the Philippines to be inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993.

Located in the center of the Sulu Sea, it covers a vast area of 96,828 hectares, including two coral atolls, the North and the South. It also has the Jessie Beazley Reef, a smaller coral structure about 20 kilometers north of the atolls. The property is considered part of Cagayancillo, a remote island municipality of Palawan inhabited mainly by fisherfolk.

UNESCO cites it as an “excellent example of pristine reefs with a high diversity of marine life,” with over 360 coral species, 600 species of fish, 11 species of sharks and rays, 13 species of dolphins and whales, and 100 species of birds. The North Islet serves as a nesting site both for birds and the green and hawksbill turtles, which are both endangered.

Tubbataha Reefs is popular with scuba divers, with its Delsan Wreck as a go-to dive site for many. Here, you will have the chance to meet several shark and ray species, such as white tip shark, tiger sharks, whale sharks, hammerheads, manta rays, devil rays, and eagle rays.

Diving here can be quite costly, however, and most sites are only recommended for seasoned or certified advanced open water divers. It is also only accessible to tourists between March and June when diving conditions are best, with clear skies, calm seas, and visibility between 30 and 45 meters.

The only way to reach Tubbataha is through a liveaboard and trips are usually between five and seven days. Liveaboard packages range from Php100,000 up to more Php200,000 per person. There are also other expenses, such as park fees, diving gear and equipment rental, travel and dive insurance, and flights to and from Palawan.

The itinerary includes 3-4 dives per day for Days two to six to explore the various dive sites.

How to get there:

Take a plane from Manila to Puerto Princesa. Dive operators usually transport their guests from the airport to the pier, just minutes away, where their boat awaits.

It takes around 10 hours to get to the Park from Puerto Princesa. Depending on the speed of the vessel, dive boats leave in the afternoon or after dinner to arrive at Tubbataha by first light the next day.

Miagao Church (Iloilo, Region VI)

The last of the four baroque structures on the list is Miagao Church. It is officially known as the Church of Saint Thomas of Villanova.

Following the Baroque-Romanesque style, the church is found in the Municipality of Miagao in Iloilo. It sinks six meters deep into the ground with walls one-and-a-half meters thick and buttresses thrice thicker.

What makes it unique from the three other baroque churches in the UNESCO list is its façade that is almost like a retablo because of its intricate design.

It has two huge unequal bell towers directly attached to the main church. A prominent element inside the church is the gold-plated retablo.

Other attractions in the property include the Hidden Garden, Tinagong Dagat, Twin Falls, and Black Mountain.

At the buffer zone area in San Isidro, there is the Mount Hamiguitan World Heritage Park. This is an interactive facility that showcases the wonders of the property.

It has an interpretation site, a natural science museum, research center and cabin, bird-watching viewdeck, a hanging bridge, a nature trail for leisure hiking, sunset viewdeck, and a cafe. A rarity is one that focuses on a town’s culinary heritage, and such a gem you will find in Negros Occidental, the “Sugar Trail.”

The sugar mill in Negros Occidental produces raw or white sugar by washing and cutting the sugar canes into shreds.
Imagine an itinerary packed with visits to sugar mills and ancestral houses, feasts of heirloom dishes, sugar farming, and even a ride on a steam locomotive—a refreshing break from the typical mountain tours and water activities. These are just some of the many exciting activities to look forward to in Western Visayas as the province reopens its doors to tourists. Visitors will get to explore the sugar heritage of Negros Occidental which came from Panay Island, particularly Iloilo and its neighboring towns where most of the sugar planters originated. Currently, only the Western Visayas has these intact sugar refineries in the country. Sugar mills are still intact in Negros Occidental, while in Panay, there are still extant small muscovado mills in Antique.

The Steam Locomotive is fueled by burning combustible material that heats water in the train’s boiler until it becomes gaseous and increases 1700 times in volume.
A beautiful complement to the Sugar Trail adventure is a visit to the growing Slow Food community in Negros Island, one of two such communities in Western Visayas (there is also a Slow Food Community in Panay). The former is recognized by the Italy-based organization Slow Food International and has 25 food items listed in the “Ark of Taste”, a catalog of endangered heritage foods around the world. Among the food items in Negros Occidental included in the list are batuan (organic souring agent), kadyos (pigeon peas), criollo cacao (white-bean cacao), and darag chicken (native Ilongo chicken). Slow Food is a concept that seeks to preserve local food cultures and traditions. It promotes traditional cuisines and the sustainable preparation of food.

Today, many travelers take an active interest in the source and history of their food and are becoming even more invested in learning about the communities that grow them. While Guimaras’ beautiful beaches and delicious mangoes make it an amazing place to visit, this stunning island also offers engaging farm-to-table agri-tourism attractions. Its Agri-tourism Circuit features a network of farm sites, including mango orchards, bee farms, salt farms, and aquaculture ponds scattered across the five municipalities of Guimaras. The tour takes visitors to Guimaras Wonders Farm and National Mango Research and Development Center in Jordan, Sebario Salt Farm in San Lorenzo, SEAFDEC Marine Reserve, and Aqua-Culture Farm in Nueva Valencia, Southern Orchard, and Spring Bloom Farm in Sibunag. Travelers can also drop by the old Trappist Monastery in Jordan, founded in 1972, where they can stock up on mango-flavored goods, jams and sweets, and many other sweet delights.

The underwater world of Western Visayas must also not be missed. You can only imagine the incredible scenery that lies within the province’s enchanting blue seas, from undamaged reefs to rich marine wildlife and a unique underwater environment. The Western Visayas Dive Circuit comprises Nogas Island in Antique, a 24-hectare deserted marine sanctuary and government naval reserve with a highly abundant marine life that is regarded by most divers as one of Panay Island’s most stunning dive sites. The Kuliatan Marine Sanctuary in Iloilo offers enticing opportunities for snorkeling and diving. It is home to a diverse range of fish, invertebrates, micro-organisms, and lush vegetation. Dive spots for skilled and seasoned divers are additional attractions for tourists looking to see the breathtaking white-sand beaches of Boracay in Aklan. Yapak and Crocodile Island are its most popular diving destinations. For macro enthusiasts, the Sipalay diving sites in Negros Occidental are ideal. People come to Campomanes Bay in search of adventure at its famed diving spots like Turtle Island, Sunken Island, and the MS Jojo wreck.

Located in the middle of the deep blues of Cebu and Negros, Sunken Island is known for its diverse marine life.
The most eco-conscious travelers will get an amazing adventure in Bacolod. You’re sure to see a spectacular array of wildlife at every turn at the Negros Forests and Ecological Foundation Biodiversity Conservation Center in South Capitol Road. Its ecological area is teeming with flora and fauna indigenous to the region. Due to deforestation and the rise of commercial and agricultural operations, most animals and plants here are in danger of extinction. This conservation center helps tourists design more eco-friendly trips and connect with the environment and wildlife while learning to respect their habitat.

Majority of the towns in Iloilo are known for having outstanding Spanish-influenced architecture. You will find beautiful churches, cemeteries, watchtowers, and bridges in nearly every site. A visit to the province’s southern and central districts takes travelers to many unique churches with rich histories to dive into as you explore them. The Baroque-Romanesque parish church of St. Thomas in Miagao, which was proclaimed a National Shrine in 1973 and included in the UNESCO World Heritage List of 1993, is a must-see when visiting these heritage churches. A tour of the Leon, Pavia, Cabatuan, Sta. Barbara, Tigbauan, Guimbal, and San Joaquin churches also provides a memorable experience.

Travelers are encouraged to check the official websites of the sites and attractions they plan to visit as well as https://philippines.travel for the latest updates on open destinations, travel restrictions, and entry requirements and safety protocols.
