Part of the charm of the traditional Filipino hospitality is making sure that visitors have their fill of the best food that their home can offer. The first thing a Filipino will ask their guest is, “have you eaten?” Wherever you go in the country, the dishes offered will vary, as each region has something unique to offer, using their best and freshest ingredients.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) highlights the country’s food traditions through different programs that encourage new dining discoveries such as the Halal Culinary Heritage Series. Launched in July 2021, the initiative showcases unique food finds in Mindanao through a video series posted on the Department’s social media platforms including Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram.

The Mindanao Halal Culinary Tourism is a project of the DOT with the Brunei Darussalam–Indonesia–Malaysia–Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA). Aside from promoting the heritage of Mindanao and familiarity with its culture, the project also aims to document the culinary practices of the area through food mapping. With this initiative, there will be more knowledge and a better understanding of Filipino Halal cuisines and cooking traditions. The Philippines is creating new experiences and attractions in its different regions, so there is always more to explore.

Halal food trip

Halal food takes on many forms throughout the Philippines. In Manila, there are restaurants and eateries that offer Halal-certified food, ranging from the stalls located in the area known as Muslim Town near the Golden Mosque in Quiapo that offer culinary delights such as Bakas or Bamboo-smoked tuna and a glutinous rice cake called Dodol. For Halal-certified Filipino fare in the Makati district, the El Prado dining outlet of the Berjaya Hotel Makati offers dishes such as Tinolang Manok (chicken in ginger broth with vegetables), a Halal Nilagang Baka (boiled beef with vegetables), and Sinigang na Baka (Beef simmered in a clear sour soup with vegetables).

When in Cotabato, travelers can try the Sinina Kambing or goat meat stewed in spices and served with Crab Rice from Hashy’s Cuisine, which is one of the pioneering Halal restaurants in the region. From the Maguindanaoan kitchens comes Linigid na Manok, a curry-like dish of chicken stewed in ginger, fresh coconut milk, and turmeric. Palapa is added to the dish to give it depth of flavor. Visitors can try this Halal dish at a restaurant called Mama Ping, a fixture in Cotabato’s dining scene.

In the Zamboanga Peninsula, composed of Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, and Zamboanga Sibugay, there are culinary delights that await. Warm-up with a bowl of Tiyula, which is the Tausug word for soup. Its most popular iteration is the Tiyula Itum, distinctive because of its dark-colored broth that comes from the addition of charred coconut. It is usually made with beef but sometimes goat meat is used. It is one of the anticipated dishes at Tausug gatherings. There is Satti as well which is a breakfast staple in Zamboanga and can be bought from Satti houses like Jimmy’s, Morning Sun, Andy’s, Dennis, and Baytal Mal serving these skewers of beef, chicken, or liver cubes with their own version of the spice-laden sauce as part of their morning offerings.

In the Davao Region, the food culture of the indigenous Kaagans can be tasted through their Amik, a confection that is made by frying a thin sweetened ground rice batter that is swirled dexterously in hot oil by practiced hands. Chili is a favorite ingredient and condiment in Mindanao cuisine and there are many varieties of chili sauce that are available, with innovations such as the Mango Pineapple Hot Sauce from the SpiChef in Davao that serves up sweet-spicy-tangy goodness.

Eat like a local

It is not an understatement that Filipinos love to eat. Get a Filipino picnic feel by packing a coffee break in a handcrafted rattan box that is filled with Filipino mementos.

Set the mood with an Inabel table rug, handwoven from the communities of the Cordillera Mountains using weaving traditions that have been passed down through generations. The Philippines is also home to artisan woodcarvers who craft wood pieces into home decorations and utilitarian items such as an Acacia wooden cup.

Fuel up with a hot brew made from world-class coffee beans that are tended by Filipino farmers. Barako coffee from Batangas is known for its strong flavor and fragrance, which is why it is named after the Filipino word that describes a male wild boar. Benguet coffee comes from a single-origin Arabica varietal that grows in the highlands of the Cordilleras that is loved for its chocolate, fruity, and floral notes. The Robusta coffee harvested from the country’s lowlands in Cavite, Bulacan, and Mindoro has a high caffeine content and is the most commercialized varietal, used in local instant coffee products.

Sweeten the deal with Muscovado sugar from the sugar plantations of Negros whose hacienderos like to pair their afternoon drinks with crisp bites of Paborita Biscuits. These are flaky discs made with wheat flour, sugar, and skim milk which originated from the Noceda Bakery that was established in Negros back in 1947.

Though not currently as popular as other destinations in Mindanao, Zamboanga del Norte teems with history and culture. The largest province in the Zamboanga Peninsula, it has a wealth of natural attractions as well.

It is dubbed the Twin-City Province, being the home of neighboring cities Dipolog, the provincial capital, and Dapitan, its cultural heart.

The latter has the distinction of being the country’s first Heritage Zone. The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) made the declaration on May 27, 2011.

Either of these two cities is a convenient base for those thinking of traveling to Zamboanga del Norte.

To help you with the planning, here is a four-day guide to the best places to see and experience in the province.

Day 1: Sample the Best of Dipolog

Dakak Park and Beach Resort
Barangay Taguilon, Dapitan

Dakak Park and Beach Resort remains to be one of the top tourist draws of Zamboanga del Norte.
The “it” place in Mindanao in the ‘90s, this resort still lives up to its reputation decades later. It remains a favorite among locals and those from nearby provinces. Day 3 of your trip can be spent just at this resort.

Dakak’s white sand beach is a jump off point for water activities, while its Adventure Zone offers outdoor ones.

The resort has accommodations that have scenic views of the Sulu Sea and the surrounding cliffs and mountains.

For reservations, visit Dakak Beach Resort’s official website.

Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral

You can start your trip with a visit to this church named after the principal patroness of the city. Constructed in 1894, it has since undergone several renovations, the latest of which was in 2009 when its façade was inlaid with marble.

Also called Dipolog Cathedral, its present altar is a replica of the retablo originally designed by José Rizal during his exile. One of the main attractions is its ceiling made of hardwood.

The cathedral was designated as one of the 500 Jubilee Churches for the quincentennial of Philippine Christianity.

Just across is Plaza Magsaysay which, though rather unremarkable, lends well for a pleasant morning stroll. The park sits right beside the City Hall.

Sungkilaw Falls

You can spend the rest of the morning relaxing at this waterfall that is about 30 to 40 minutes from downtown Dipolog.

Nestled in the heart of a lush forest, Sungkilaw Falls challenges visitors with a rough hike, but its pristine and refreshing waters make the trek worth it.

With the help of the local government and Subanen communities, structures have been constructed in the area such as cottages and toilets. Trails had also been carved out for a smoother hike.

Cogon Eco-Park

Cogon Eco-Park is a 344-hectare area covered with thick forests. It is a go-to place for camping. Photo by Playground Films PH courtesy of the Department of Tourism.

Spend the entire afternoon at this protected area that is home to different species of flora and fauna.

On the way, you can drop by the city center for some takeout lunch. Then you can proceed to picnic at the eco-park amid towering acacia, mahogany, rattan, and narra trees.

What started out as a reforestation project in 1952 is now 344 hectares of land covered with thick forests. It is a go-to place for families and friends for a weekend of camping.

Aside from the hiking trails and the camping site, it has a recreation of a Subanen Village, a hanging bridge, and an aviary.

Dipolog Sunset Boulevard

Cap off your day at Dipolog’s most famous strip. Promenade along this boulevard facing the Sulu Sea where you can catch the sunset.

While waiting for the sun to dip below the horizon, you can snack on the various street foods sold by nearby hawkers.

Dipolog Sunset Boulevard makes for a pleasant afternoon stroll thanks to its gorgeous sunsets.
This stretch comes alive as dusk settles. It transforms to a hive of activity with a seemingly endless row of vendors selling all sorts of eats from barbecues to fried chicken skin, ice cream to fresh fruits.

Day 2: A Dose of History and Adventure

Church of Saint James the Greater

The bulk of your second day will be spent at Glorious Fantasy Land which does not open until 2pm. You can opt to spend the morning exploring some of Dapitan’s historical sites.

Start the day with a quick visit to the Church of Saint James the Greater. This was where Rizal heard mass every Sunday during his four-year exile.

There is a marker near the entrance where Rizal usually sat. He could not go near the altar during mass because of his excommunication from the Catholic Church.

The country’s National Hero painted a backdrop inspired by a church in Barcelona for the altar. Sadly, the painting was later destroyed in a fire.

Aside from its ties to Rizal, the church is also known for its distinct ceiling. Alternating orange and white rectangles form a swirling pattern, creating an almost dizzying illusion of depth and motion.

The church is known for its distinct ceiling that creates an illusion of depth and motion. Photo by Playground Films PH courtesy of the Department of Tourism.

Ilihan Hill

After visiting the church, you can go on a short hike atop the hill just behind it. There is a staircase by the entrance where you have to climb over 200 steps to reach the top.

Ilihan Hill served as the burial ground of Dapitan’s original settlers. Upon the arrival of the Spaniards, they renamed it Fort Dapitan and put up stone walls and cannons.

Dapitan Heritage Zone

The NHCP determined 33 heritage structures in Dapitan’s Heritage Zone, giving rise to its moniker the “Shrine City.”

The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) identifies 33 heritage structures in Dapitan which is also called the “Shrine City.
Aside from the Church of Saint James the Greater, a bike around town reveals century-old ancestral houses and other timeworn structures.

One of the few remaining original heritage houses in the city is that of Pablo Page’s. Built in 1919, it was often the venue of gatherings among the local social and political elite in the ‘50s to the ‘70s.

Another ancestral house is that of Aniano Adasa’s which now houses the Dapitan Tourism Office. It was built in 1900 and has American and Spanish influences.

Since 2016, the local government has been working with the national government and the private sector to preserve their historical and cultural treasures.

Glorious Fantasyland

Spend the rest of the day at Mindanao’s biggest theme park. It has over 30 rides and attractions for all ages. Adrenaline junkies can go on a ride at their Zimmerman roller coaster and the Galleon, while kids can take a spin at the teacup ride or the ferris wheel.

Glorious Fantasyland is Mindanao’s largest theme park with rides and attractions for visitors of all ages.
Glorious Fantasyland is also known for its musical show entitled “Nia and Anwar” which starts at 8pm. After the show, visitors are treated to a colorful “Festival of Colors” parade with its 12 elaborate floats. A fireworks display punctuates the night every weekend.

The theme park is also famous for its “Festival of Colors” parade with its 12 elaborate floats.
Glorious Fantasyland’s all-in package of unlimited rides, show, parade, and fireworks display during weekends is at Php1000/adult and Php500/child 4ft below. Gates open at 2pm and close at 10pm or later depending on the volume of guests.

Day 3: Discover Dakak

Dapitan is not only synonymous with Rizal but also with Dakak Park and Beach Resort thanks to the TV ads that ran regularly in a popular noontime show in the ‘90s.

Dakak Park and Beach Resort offers outdoor activities aplenty from diving to rock climbing. Photo by Playground Films PH courtesy of the Department of Tourism.

The resort is a 15-hectare area that is known for its lush coves and 750-meter white sand beach. Visitors can engage in different water activities such as jet-skiing, parasailing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and banana boat riding.

It is only fitting to begin your final day in Zamboanga del Norte at the site where Rizal started his life as an exile. He disembarked from the steamer S.S. Cebu at Santa Cruz Beach, 7pm on July 17, 1892.

Marking the point of landing is a monument conceived by Antonio Tuviera and designed by Architect Nilo Ajo Ferraren. It is composed of bronze statues of Rizal, ship captain Delgras, and three artillery men.

The statues were sculpted, installed, and bronzed by Ronel Roces, a former apprentice of National Artist for Sculpture Napoleon Abueva. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on December 29, 2009.

Across the landing site is a 20-foot cross symbolizing the propagation of Christianity in Dapitan.

Rizal Park and Shrine

Photo by Playground Films PH courtesy of the Department of Tourism.

This 16-hectare protected area aims to preserve the memories of Rizal during his exile in Dapitan from 1892 to 1896. He himself purchased the estate.

The property has five faithfully reconstructed bamboo and nipa houses. All were originally built by Rizal and had been rebuilt in their original locations.

The biggest of the five is Casa Residencia which served as Rizal’s residence.

The other structures are Casa Redonda, the quarters for Rizal’s students; Casa Cuadrada, a secondary dormitory to accommodate his growing number of pupils; Casa Redonda Pequeña, a henhouse; and Casitas Hospitales, two structures originally intended as tea houses but Rizal converted them into clinics for patients from far-flung areas.

Near the shrine’s main gate is Museo ni Jose Rizal. It houses several memorabilia including Rizal’s letters, wardrobe, medical instruments, fishing tools, and replicas of his artworks including those of his wife Josephine Bracken.

The original blackboard, table, and chairs used in his school are also on display.

Do not miss the heart-shaped rock where Rizal wrote his longest poem, “Mi Retiro”, which has 24 stanzas. This is also where he exchanged vows with Bracken.

Admission to Rizal Park and Shrine is free.

Getting there

Dipolog is the gateway to the province of Zamboanga del Norte. Major local airlines like Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific have direct flights to the city. There are also daily buses from Zamboanga City to Dipolog and Dapitan.

The cheapest way to explore the cities is through jeepneys and tricycles. You may also rent your own vehicle. Exploring downtown Dapitan is best done on a bike. Coordinate with your hotel for rentals.

You’ll never run out of things to do in Dapitan, Zamboanga del Norte. It has everything for all kinds of travelers—from the adrenaline junkie to the history geek, the nature lover to the insatiable foodie. It’s home to the famous resort Dakak, has a host of natural wonders, and shares a deep connection with the country’s national hero Jose Rizal.

Aside from these, the city is home to an attraction that has been well loved by locals and visitors for the past 12 years: Glorious Fantasyland (formerly Gloria’s Fantasyland), Mindanao’s biggest and most famous theme park.

Rides and attractions for all ages

There are rides for thrill-seeking visitors such as their Space Rocket.
Glorious Fantasyland opened its doors in 2009 as the brainchild of Zamboanga del Norte’s Jalosjos family who also owns Dakak. What started out as a humble pint-sized perya (or fair) has since expanded to a five-hectare theme park with rides, attractions, and shows to keep visitors entertained.

Rides such as this ferris wheel appeal to younger visitors.
It takes pride in its over 30 rides and many other attractions. Arconil Jose Jalosjos, general manager, says that many of their rides are unique to the theme park, at least locally. “We have a 5D cinema, one of the best horror houses in Asia, one of the biggest rollercoasters, the Zimmerman, and now we have Lakbay Pinas.”

“Lakbay Pinas” is Glorious Fantasyland’s newest attraction, which opened just last December. It’s inspired by Disneyland’s “It’s a Small World” and aims to showcase the beauty of the Philippines through miniature replicas depicting each region’s icons, which visitors can “explore” through a 7-minute train ride.

Among those featured are the Ifugao Rice Terraces, Manila’s Rizal Park, the different Visayan festivals, and the Grand Mosque of Cotabato, the second largest in Southeast Asia.

Aside from the rides that appeal to thrill seeking guests, younger visitors can choose among kid-friendly options like the carousel, tea-cup ride, and bump cars.

“The theme park can carry as many as 5,000 guests and all the employees are 100 percent vaccinated. We’re ready to receive visitors,” shares Jalosjos.

Arconil Jose Jalosjos, general manager, says that many of their rides are unique to Glorious Fantasyland.
Most visitors are from nearby areas in Mindanao, but interestingly, the park also receives guests from Manila. Jalosjos explains that they “have a package with accommodation, Dakak, and a visit to Glorious Fantasyland that’s why we get guests from all over.”

Local talent

More than the adrenaline pumping attractions, the theme park is also known for its musical show entitled “Nia and Anwar.” A favorite among visitors, the production starts at 8pm just before the park closes, but guests start saving a spot as much as an hour early.

The story follows Nia, the daughter of the great voyager Indri. She guards the goddess of night and day Rahna’s Cape of Stars that guides the voyagers’ boats home. One night, Nia gets distracted from her duty and leaves her post unguarded enabling the villainous Daawe to snatch the Cape of Stars in a sinister plot to overthrow Rahna. Helping in Nia’s fight against Daawe is her warrior friend Anwar.

Glorious Fantasyland’s entertainment director Jason Salvez shares how their chairman, Romeo Jalosjos, has always been a fan of the butanding and this served as the inspiration for the play. “That’s why the story features the butanding and the fantasy world.”

The audience only has a few seconds to catch their breath after the musical, because immediately following is the park’s equally famous “Festival of Colors” parade. Its 12 giant floats represent the culture and colors of 12 different countries from India to Brazil, Japan to the Philippines.

Pre-pandemic, they had about 170 talents who were largely outsourced from Manila. Now they only have 75, the majority of which are locals of Dapitan, with the remaining few from neighboring Dipolog.

Glorious Fantasyland’s entertainment director Jason Salvez shares that most of their performers are Dapitanons. Photo by Playground Films PH courtesy of the Department of Tourism.

“That’s how talented Dapitanons are,” shares Salvez. “Maybe after the pandemic we can hire more talents. Most of our performers are students. That’s one of the visions of our chairman—to help students help their families.”

Salvez says that they have recently revamped the production after observing that the audience couldn’t seem to relate to the previous iteration. “The audience wants fantasy. They want it easy to understand. They want it pleasing to the eyes,” he explains.

To address these observations, he revised the choreography for both the musical and the parade and even had all the costumes redesigned.

New attractions for the new year

The chairman of Glorious Fantasyland is a visionary who never runs out of ideas for the park. “All of the ideas are from him. We just execute and support (his ideas),” Jalosjos says.

“Lakbay Pinas” is the theme park’s newest attraction that showcases the beauty of the Philippines through miniature replicas which can be “explored” through a 7-minute train ride.
Following his ideas, the management is all set to open a new attraction called “Snow World” and a Go Kart ride in the first quarter of 2022. Snow World sits on an area that’s almost 1,500 sqm wide and promises to let Mindanaoans experience winter.

Salvez adds with a chuckle, “We don’t know but with the chairman, probably after ‘Snow World’, we will have another (attraction) again. He will not stop.”

Practical information

Glorious Fantasyland’s all-in package of unlimited rides, show, parade, and fireworks display (every weekend) is at Php1000/adult and Php500/kids 4ft below. Gates open at 2pm and close at 10pm or later depending on the volume of guests.

Shuttle services are available in Dipolog and Dapitan. Guests can also hop on a tricycle at the Dapitan town center and ask to be brought to Gloria de Dapitan.

Companies can make arrangements for the Glorious Fantasyland shuttle bus. Guests can be picked up from neighboring cities in Mindanao like Zamboanga, Cagayan de Oro, or Ozamiz for a minimum of 50 pax.

Glamping has steadily gained popularity in the Philippines over the past few years. This is especially true for families and friends who have been drawn to this outdoor activity being an excellent choice for bonding and nature tripping.

A portmanteau of glamorous camping, this is for those who want to commune with nature minus the hassle of setting up a tent or starting a campfire. Unlike its rowdier version, glamping offers conveniences such as a pre-pitched tent with air beds/mattresses, blankets, and pillows—all while still basking in nature’s majesty.

Glamping spots can already be found around the country, from those with high tourist traffic to more off-the-beaten paths like Zamboanga del Norte. This Mindanao province is still relatively off the tourist radar despite being blessed with a wealth of natural beauty and rich history.

Not known to many, it has world-class dive spots, exciting trekking sites, and a unique relationship with our national hero.

In recent years, the province has made efforts to capitalize on tourism and one of the most popular attractions to date is the high-altitude SFJ Organica Farm, which is known for its mountain vistas.

Western feels in western Mindanao

SFJ Organica Farm is located in Brgy. Bagong Baguio in the municipality of Sergio Osmeña Sr. It is a pioneer in producing quality organic products in Zamboanga del Norte, with land in that area ideal for growing crops similar to those in Luzon’s Mountain Province. The farm grows organic lettuce, tomatoes, and other produce in its four greenhouses which are sold in nearby areas.

It can get as cold as 20 degrees Celsius at SFJ Organica Farm which is perched at an altitude of 1,000 feet above sea level. Photo by Playground Films PH courtesy of the Department of Tourism.

“Around 2016, we saw the potential of the farm because it is very cold in that area,” shares SFJ Organica Farm business partner Kathlyn Uyehara-Hamoy, who started the venture with her two best friends. She says that it can go as low as 20 degrees on the farm.

“The owner, Seth Frederick ‘Bullet’ Jalosjos, the lot is his father’s, but it was only he who was interested in farming,” Uyehara-Hamoy shares. “Me and my husband, Britz, the three of us are best friends. We’re really into farming.”

The three of them would travel to look into other organic farms in and out of the country. “We studied lettuce production and other high-value crops on how to manage them and how to grow them properly,” Uyehara-Hamoy adds.

The 12-hectare property is perched at an altitude of 1,000 feet above sea level and nestled at the heart of lush mountains. In the five years since its inception, it has grown to become a popular glamping spot in the region.

It has enough space for six tents and four container vans/rooms with contemporary industrial aesthetics. The farm also has a manor, which serves as a common area for guests to play table soccer or just lounge on the plush couches.

“SFJ is more of a western (style), with industrial homes. My husband designed those. The manor has a western country feel, with a touch of Mediterranean with the fountain,” Uyehara-Hamoy, a professional industrial designer, shares. “What Bullet wants is that when you enter the farm, when you see it, you don’t feel that you’re in the Philippines. He wants SFJ to transport you to another time and place.”

The farm incorporates a western aesthetic as seen in its manor which serves as a common area for guests.
All container vans including the external bathrooms are fully furnished and newly renovated. The glamping tents and the Italian fountain are newly installed. The farm is home to horses, peacocks, goats, love birds, and a cockatoo. An alpaca couple shipped from Australia, Oreo and Hash Brown, also live at SFJ.

Sustainability efforts for farmers

When you go glamping at SFJ Organica Farm, you are also able to lend a hand in the farm’s sustainability efforts.

“SFJ’s advocacy is really to help farmers to earn more by teaching them how to do it properly using quality seeds and training them how to do organic farming,” Uyehara-Hamoy says.

The farm grows organic produce like lettuce and tomatoes which are sold in nearby areas. Photo by Playground Films PH courtesy of the Department of Tourism.

Many farmers, she says, aren’t adept at marketing and buyers purchase their goods at a low price.

“Sometimes, they don’t earn at all. Like growing lettuce, it’s very expensive. The seed itself is very expensive,” Uyehara-Hamoy explains. “The inputs that you have to put in, although it’s all organic, but still it takes a lot of time and effort so they don’t earn at all if they don’t have the proper training and the right market.”

What the owners plan to do this time around is to have the farmers plant only lettuce. They’ll buy those at an above average market price so that the farmers can earn. In the process, they hope that farming would be made more appealing to the younger generation.

“If they earn they will keep on doing it and the youth, their children in that area, can also feel that they can make money out of farming,” Uyehara-Hamoy says. “It’s not a job because you weren’t able to go to college or high school so you end up as a farmer.”

Uyehara-Hamoy usually goes from one school to the other and talks to high school students about keeping the tradition of farming alive.

“You don’t have to be all nurses, you don’t have to be all teachers,” she says. “You can also be a farmer. This time we want to change that mentality starting with the farmers now. Next is the youth, we want to encourage them not to leave their land in the area where they belong and start to learn about the soil, the right practices to make farming sustainable and so that they can earn as well.”

A training director at the TESDA-accredited Integrated Business Skills Academy (IBSA), Uyehara-Hamoy handles Organic Agriculture Farming where she teaches personality development, proper hygiene, and safety to the farmers.

“Not because you’re a farmer you go straight from your bed to the farm. You also have to take care of yourself,” she says. “Wear the proper PPEs to protect your skin. Doesn’t have to be expensive, you can wear something from the ukay-ukay or old clothes as long as it protects you from the sun, the rain, and others.”

Plans for expansion

The owners plan to further develop the 12-hectare property for farm tourism. Currently, less than seven hectares has been developed.

“We plan to have other herbs as well and other high-value crops. But we’re still contemplating the market needs. We have to check first because it has to be market-driven. It would be a waste if nobody buys them,” Uyehara-Hamoy says.

She shares that plans are underway to expand the glamping site so it could accommodate four more tents and four more container vans.

Over three decades of history

The 15-hectare resort started out as residential property on August 17, 1988.

The name “Dakak” is a portmanteau of the Visayan words “dakong kakahoyan” which means “big forest.” As recalled by some locals, the area is covered with green lush forest and big trees.. The owners of Dakak Resort have conserved the space by allowing these naturally grown trees in the are to thrive.

Dakak first seeped into public consciousness through the regular airing of its commercials on a popular noontime show after it was launched and the hosting of the Miss Universe 1994.

“In our 34 years in the business, we have remained as one of the most popular travel destinations on this side of the country because we always see to it that we have plenty of services for our guests to enjoy,” shares the resort’s corporate marketing manager April Vianney Laput.

She says that management always thinks of new offerings be it newly-renovated villas, a state-of-the-art aqua facility, a new bar, restaurant, or just a menu upgrade.

Though it has been a relatively smooth sailing three decades, Dakak’s operations, as in similar establishments, have been upended by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We closed during the lockdown,” Laput shares, “and pushed back promotions for a reopening in June 2020.”

She explains that they cut down on their expenses and applied a skeleton workforce to ensure the maintenance of the resort and its operations.

With the tourism sector finally showing signs of recovery, the resort is looking forward to going full swing again.

“With our Villa Angelina Luxury Suites expansion, Dakak Resort and Properties is now capable of catering to all types of markets: from families to adventure seekers, honeymooners to business travelers, golfers to dive enthusiasts,” says Laput.

Of the resort’s plans, she explains that they are focused on improving their products and services and saturating the areas where they need more sales traffic.

They are currently revisiting their partnerships with the Chinese and Korean markets to expand the resort’s reach.

Furthermore, recognizing the trend toward sustainable tourism, the management has spearheaded initiatives such as its “Go Green” and “Grow More Trees” programs which commenced in 2019.

“We have been taking steps to implement sustainable practices such as the use of recyclable materials and solar-powered facilities, energy and water conservation, and proper waste disposal,” Laput explains.

She adds that their corporate social responsibility (CSR) revolves around coastal cleanliness and a plastic-free environment.

Accommodations for couples and families

The resort complex has 158 fully furnished rooms in native duplex bungalows made of bamboo and with capiz window panes.

The resort’s 750-meter stretch of white-sand beach is the starting point for different water activities. You can go diving with their PADI-trained divers with the surrounding waters considered one of Mindanao’s most famous dive spots.
