Amid the volcanic island of Camiguin in Northern Mindanao lies a unique and expansive mountain range with dramatic slopes and majestic peaks, lush forests, and rich wildlife. If you want to be surrounded by this scenic landscape, why not visit Mounts Timpoong – Hibokhibok Natural Monument? Whether you’re a visitor seeking to recharge in the quiet, a wildlife enthusiast, or an adventure traveler, Timpoong Hibokhibok has a lot to offer you.

Timpoong Hibokhibok is the country’s 8th ASEAN Heritage Park, a key biodiversity area spanning 2,203.39 hectares in central and western Camiguin. It covers the municipalities of Catarman, Mahinog, Mambajao, and Sagay.

Declared a protected area (PA) in 2004, Timpoong Hibokhibok is listed among the PAs under Republic Act 11038 of 2018. It belongs to the 113 legislated PAs throughout the country. As a protected area, Timpoong Hibokhibok is distinguished for its unique biodiversity, ecological importance, and needed preservation.

The Forests and Mountains of Timpoong – HibokHibok

The highlights of the natural park are Mt. Timpoong and Mt. Hibokhibok.

Mt. Timpoong, which is the peak of Mt. Mambajao, stands at 1,614 meters above sea level. It is the tallest peak in Camiguin.

Mt. Hibokhibok—an active, conical volcano that is made of hardened lava—stands at 1,200 meters above sea level. It is the peak of Mt. Catarman, and is the largest volcano in Camiguin.

Photo courtesy of the Department of Tourism.

Across Timpoong Hibokhibok lie grassland, mossy, and upland wetland forests. The protected area is also home to dipterocarp forests of tall and many different tropical trees, as well as a crater lake, the Nangkawa Crater. These habitats help sustain life in Timpoong Hibokhibok.

In the natural monument also stand majestic waterfalls, such as Binangawan, Katibawasan, and Tuasan. Springs, both hot and cold, may be found in the area, too. The Sagay and Binangawan rivers also pass through Timpoong Hibokhibok.

This protected area helps keep the air in the area clean, and the climate in the area cool. It serves as a main source of water for the people of Camiguin.

Government efforts to conserve Philippine PAs

Currently, there are 247 PAs under the NIPAS, 113 of which have been legislated, 13 have been proclaimed by the President, and 120 remain as initial components of the System. The NIPAS was established by virtue of Republic Act 7586 or the NIPAS Act of 1992, and amended by Republic Act 11038 or the Expanded NIPAS (ENIPAS) Act of 2018.

NIPAS is the classification and administration of all designated PAs to maintain essential ecological processes to preserve genetic diversity, to ensure the sustainable use of resources found therein, and to maintain their natural conditions to the greatest extent possible.

The year 2022 marks the 90th anniversary of PA establishment in the country through Republic Act 3915 that was enacted on 1 February 1932. In line with this, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the Department of Tourism (DOT), and the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) signed a joint declaration to support the celebration of the Year of the Protected Areas or the YoPA Campaign, which promotes Philippine national parks.

The DENR, through its Biodiversity Management Bureau, and the Biodiversity Finance Initiative (BIOFIN) of UNDP Philippines, in partnership with the DOT and DILG, are working together to promote protected areas under the NIPAS. They are also working with other agencies at the national and local levels to ensure effective conservation and sustainable management for national parks nationwide.

Kalanggaman Island, Leyte

The waters surrounding this long stretch of beach are crystal clear, with a white powdery sandbar perfect for a long solitary stroll and for taking lots of photos.

Kalanggaman is derived from the word “langgam,” which means bird in the local dialect, as the two ends of the island seem to flap like bird’s wings when viewed from above.

There are no big resorts on Kalanggaman Island, and crowds are kept at bay, with the Municipality of Palompon putting a cap on the number of tourists that can visit per day. Those who want to spend the night can stay at native cottages or set up camp along the strip of beach and watch the stars put on a show against a gorgeous velvet sky. The nearest hotels are in Ormoc and Tacloban, both of which are several hours away from the island.

Traveling to the island is most convenient through Ormoc or Tacloban. Although there are currently no direct international flights to these cities, visitors can fly to Mactan-Cebu International Airport and take a connecting flight to either of the two municipalities. Flying to Ormoc is your best option as it will take just an hour and a half by bus or van to reach the Palompon Ecotours Office, where you will need to pay a conservation charge before boarding a 90-minute ferry trip to Kalanggaman Island on a rented boat.

Secret Beach, El Nido, Palawan

Framed by towering cliffs and turquoise-hued waters, Secret Beach in El Nido is a hidden paradise waiting to be discovered by travelers who want to experience the thrill of finding a treasure from Mother Nature. The beach is accessible only by swimming through a crevice among the limestone rocks that’s just above the water.

The quickest way to El Nido is a direct flight from Manila to Lio Airport, which is about 30 minutes away by land from the El Nido town proper. Alternatively, you can fly to Puerto Princesa and take a five-hour bus or van ride to the town center.

El Nido is known for its luxury hotels and exclusive resorts, but budget-conscious travelers can also find basic hostel and cottage accommodation options across this world-class island destination. Secret Beach itself is located on Matinloc Island, which is a boat ride away from El Nido town proper. To access this hidden gem, you can book the El Nido Tour C through any of the town’s travel operators, which will take you to the beach as well as Matinloc’s other sites.

Sugar Beach, Sipalay, Negros Occidental

This aptly-named beach in the sweet province of Negros Occidental is a destination known mostly to locals as Langub Beach. Locals love to spend their lazy summer afternoons swimming in its azure waters. Here, one can catch a beautiful sunset while listening to the waves and relaxing on the warm brown sand. Among the activities to try are snorkeling and paddleboarding or simply taking a refreshing dip in the cooling blue waters.

This secret oasis isn’t easy to get to, but it’s well worth the effort. From Manila or Cebu, you can take a flight to Bacolod City, and from there take a five-hour bus ride to Hinoba-an at Ceres South Terminal. You should get off the bus at Gil Montilla junction near Sipalay City Hall, along the highway. Get on a tricycle from here and head to Barangay Nauhang river. You may rent a small boat to transport you to the southern end of Sugar Beach, where you’ll have to walk to your preferred resort. Flying into Dumaguete City is another option, which takes about the same travel time.

There’s a range of luxury and budget resorts and hotels in Sipalay City, where Sugar Beach is located. These include beachfront accommodations, each with its own sunbeds, cabanas, kayaks, and ample space for various beach activities.

Mantigue Island, Camiguin Province

A 20-minute scenic boat trip from the eastern side of the alluring Camiguin Island brings travelers to this gleaming white sand island framed by lush greenery. Mantigue Island is a four-hectare slice of tropical wonderland famous among divers because of the endangered hawksbill turtle frequently sighted in its clear waters. This island is indeed a diver’s dream because it is teeming with colorful and rare marine creatures such as colorful clownfish, nudibranchs, frogfish, sharks, and dense schools of fish with a backdrop of amazing gardens of corals and seascapes.

To complete your experience, you can admire the local wildlife of its mini tropical jungle, frolic among the waves, laze on the powdery sand, or you can grab a bite of the sea urchin (uni) offered by the locals on the beach right out of the ocean! There are no big crowds on the island as it is only open for day tours, and the number of visitors is limited to help preserve its natural beauty. If you need to spend the night, there are inexpensive beach resorts, hostels, and homestays in Mahinog and nearby towns.

The fastest way to travel to the island is to fly from Manila or Cebu to Cagayan de Oro City. From the CDO airport, you can take a shuttle to Agora Bus Terminal, then board a bus to Balingoan Port, where you can take a boat to Benoni Wharf. At the Wharf, you can hire a tricycle or motorbike to take you to the Mantigue Island departure area in Barangay San Roque, Mahinog.

Guyam, Daku, and Naked Island, Surigao del Norte

Siargao is fast becoming a favorite surfing destination for local and foreign enthusiasts, but for those who want to experience the more idyllic side of the province, they can book a boat tour that will take them island hopping for a whole day of enjoyment among small secluded sandbars. Guyam, Daku, and Naked Island are destinations for those who want to feel what it is like to live on a tiny remote island. Guyam is a small circular island with swaying coconut trees and beach huts, while Naked Island, as its name implies, is a bare beach with deep waters suited for scuba diving. Daku, which means ‘big’ in the local dialect, is large enough to be home to a small and friendly fishing community.

Traveling by air is the most efficient way to reach these islands. If you’re flying in from another country, you’ll need to fly into either Manila-Ninoy Aquino International Airport, Mactan-Cebu International Airport, or Davao International Airport. And then take another flight to Siargao (Sayak Airport), located in Barangay Del Carmen, about 45 minutes from General Luna, which is the favored home base of most tourists visiting the province. There, you can choose from a variety of accommodation options ranging from traditional resorts to chic boutique hotels and hostels. The town is also home to tourist booths where you can book island hopping packages that will take you to both Guyam, Daku and Naked Island.

Calaguas Island, Camarines Norte

The white sand and blue seawater of Calaguas Island in Camarines Norte has become a popular destination among local beach lovers who want to experience a quick getaway from urban life. If you like a peaceful beach environment, Calaguas is the ideal location to rest and unwind. Relax on the beach, swim in the clear water, explore the island, and connect with your friends, and you will enjoy the island’s uncomplicated pleasures. Scuba diving/snorkeling (bring your own equipment), island and beach hopping, sunrise/sunset viewing, swimming, and camping are some of the other activities available. You may also choose to trek the rolling hills of the nearby Tinaga Island.

To reach the island, Naga in Camarines Sur is the closest airport with regular commercial flights from Manila. From Naga, Daet is around two hours drive. Once in Daet, get on a public van bound for Paracale (entry point to Calaguas Island). The trip takes another two hours. After arriving, look for the fish port and rent a boat bound for Mahabang Buhangin.

Tents, huts, cabanas, and air-conditioned rooms are available at beachfront resorts in Calaguas. Alternatively, you can stay in resorts and hotels in Daet and other neighboring towns.

Getting to bask in the glory of our country’s natural wonders has been a travel treat that has been kept from us because of the pandemic. But with restrictions being lifted, exploring our great outdoors is high up on many people’s to-do list.

Tourism in Northern Mindanao hopes to address that need with the development of its Green Adventure Loop. Biodiversity conservation is highlighted in this new tourism offering, which focuses on the exploration of natural attractions in Misamis Oriental and Camiguin.

Imposing mountains, lush jungles and slopes, and palm-tree-fringed beaches characterize the largely coastal province of Misamis Oriental. On the other hand, natural wonders such as majestic volcanoes, lagoons, lakes, and hot and cold springs as well as pristine waterfalls and white-sand shores, abound on the volcanic island of Camiguin.

Visitors to these destinations may also engage in local conservation initiatives organized by the local government entities in these areas while they tour the places.

Jasaan, Misamis Oriental

Here, the Philippine sailfin lizards, or ibid, is a particular point of interest. The Philippine Sailfin Lizard Sanctuary is the only spot in the world where scientists may study the lizard at various phases of its life.
These reptiles are officially declared as vulnerable due to its dwindling population. However, it does not seem to be the case at this sanctuary where hundreds of the sailfin lizards are usually seen lounging along the estuary.
The sanctuary offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience for tourists to get up close and personal with these incredible reptiles.

The Immaculate Conception Church in Poblacion, Upper Jasaan is also a must-see when visiting the town.

The National Museum has designated this Baroque-style cathedral in Northern Mindanao as a National Cultural Treasure. They built the chapel with the intention of mimicking the historic San Ignacio Church in Manila, which is said to have been built by Jesuit brothers Francisco Rivera and Juan Cuesta.

Jasaan is located 40 kilometers east of Cagayan de Oro. To get to the municipality, you may take a jeep, bus, or van from the Agora terminal.

Sugbongcogon, Misamis Oriental

About an hour’s drive from Jasaan, Sugbongcogon has lush surroundings and an abundance of wildlife.

The three-hectare rescue complex Mantianak Botanical Garden and Zoological Park in Barangay Poblacion is well-known for its ecotour experience, which allows visitors to get up close and personal with the local fauna and their natural habitat. (Be careful not to disturb them!) The facility, which is the first of its kind in the province, houses 178 different kinds of animals, including monkeys, tigers, wild boars, deer, and crocodiles.

And, just a few minutes away, you can dine al fresco at Halseyle Hill in Tiningalan. There you can take in the views of Camiguin Island and Mt. Balatukan while feasting on Cafe Maria’s classic American diner favorites and Mong’s Grill’s Filipino barbecue choices. Sugbongcogon can be seen as a sweeping panorama from the view deck, which is situated in Barangay Poblacion’s highest point.

Sugbongcogon is 78 kilometers northeast of Cagayan de Oro (about two hours by road). Take a bus or van to Butuan or Gingoog from the Agora Terminal, and ask to be dropped off at Sugbongcogon. The fare is around PHP 145.

Camiguin Island

With its diversified topography, Camiguin provides kilometers of unspoiled white beaches and other natural treasures including towering waterfalls and calming hot springs.

Explore White Island, an isolated white sandbar set against the background of mounts Hibok-Hibok and Vulcan.

Swimming, sunbathing, snorkeling, and watching the sunrise and sunset are all popular activities on the island. It is situated two kilometers between Agoho and Yumbing and imposes a PHP 20 environmental fee on its guests. Taking a boat trip to get there costs Php 420.

Another island excursion is a visit to Mantigue Island. Four hectares of evergreen woods and white granule sand beaches can be seen here, while the north of the island is home to a fishing community.

You’ll also find white sand beaches on one side of the island, and steep drop-offs for snorkeling and diving on the other side. It’s a 25-30-minute boat ride from San Roque, Mahinog.

If you are in the mood for more water adventures, head to Tuasan Falls, which is six kilometers northeast of Catarman. The hike to the wild and spectacular falls winds through the scenic Barangay Mainit, Catarman as well as along the rocky river bank. The pool under the waterfalls is deep and pristine while the areas surrounding it make for a great picnic location.

Hibok-hibok’s volcanic vents occasionally spew off steam, which rises from the bubbling hot water. Bathing in the spring at night contrasts well with the cold mountain air. The property has a small eatery with picnic tables and tents provided on the nicely designed grounds.

One of Camiguin Island’s most popular tourist attractions, Catarman’s Sunken Cemetery reveals the remains of an old local burial site. The eruption of Mt. Vulcan or Daang Bulkan thousands of years ago devastated most of Catarman and the local cemetery sank into the ocean to a depth near the surface.

The Farm and Aqua Tourism Loop in Northern Mindanao is one way to explore the region. This adventure loop takes you on a magnificent journey through the scenic mountain views of the Gingoog-Claveria-Villanueva Road, ending in a visit to the mysterious Camiguin Island.

Robert Garcia was poised for a long corporate career ahead of him. He had a promising job in training—handling new hires in call centers, managing trainers, and working with US-based clients.

But when a heartbreak led to a series of more frustrations, Garcia felt desperate. This desperation led him to a life changing decision. “I moved from Manila to Camiguin on June 1, 2017,” he recalls.

A desperate move for change

Kurma is a popular dive shop, restaurant, and lodge in Camiguin.
“I would not call it ‘inspiration’ but more like a desperate move for change. It was a combination of wanting a change in my environment after a very bad breakup.”

Garcia, who also handled a couple of family businesses, shares that he initially wanted to leave the country, “I was on Facebook messaging everyone I knew who was not in the Philippines looking for jobs abroad, cities as well. Macau, Singapore, and even thinking about moving to Las Vegas where my mom and brothers are.”

While in a frantic search for a place to move, Garcia stumbled upon an old friend who at that time started Kurma Freedive Camiguin, a small dive shop with a restaurant and accommodation.

“I asked what life was like and if I could work for them. After a few chats, I decided I would try it out for a few months, live a simpler life with less income, but maybe just a break also.”

Using the money he made by selling his car and condo unit, he booked a flight, relocated, and never looked back.

A complete lifestyle reset

Garcia found himself back at square one when he arrived on the island. “I started as a waiter (at Kurma). It was a very busy time, learning new skills, eventually being tasked to manage the restaurant and the bookings at the resort.”

Being near the sea eventually got him to try freediving with which he fell in love. “I realized I could teach freediving by becoming an instructor. It was the perfect combination of my previous skills plus newly gained ones.” Freediving courses at Kurma start at Php8500.

Living in Camiguin has benefited the Level 3 freediving instructor both physically and mentally. “From the fresh air to the fresh food—I lost about 40 pounds within the first couple of months,” Garcia recounts. Being amid nature also inspired him to lead a more active lifestyle, allowing him to strike a balance in life.

Camiguin is famous for its natural wonders like the island of Mantigue, a protected marine sanctuary blessed with white sand, pristine waters, and a tiny forest.
Garcia was able to take better care of his mental health after he relocated. “Being surrounded by nature made me feel more attached to life, if that makes sense. Everything is more affordable,” he admits.

He cautions, however, that island life is not for everyone. “I’ve met people who tried to slow down but seemed to be missing the hustle and bustle of the city. If you want to try it, don’t rush into it, see if it is something you can really get into. It’s a complete change in lifestyle,” he advises.

Camiguin recommendations

Garcia could only talk about Camiguin, nicknamed the “Island Born of Fire” for its many volcanoes, with so much fondness.

“Camiguin is already ‘developing’ but still has a lot of nature all around. From the deep waters with diverse dive sites, to the volcanoes and mountains. I am biased to freediving but any diving or snorkeling is good. Climb the mountains, go to the hidden springs and waterfalls.”

You won’t run out of things to do on the island if you’re fond of the great outdoors—from trekking Mt. Hibok-hibok to soaking in its hot, cold, and soda springs, from sunbathing on White Island to snorkeling in Mantigue.

White Island, a sandbar off the northern shore of the capital Mambajao, is one of Camiguin’s most popular attractions.
With Camiguin slowly becoming a melting pot of cultures with expats and urban-dwellers calling the island home and setting up restaurants and cafés, the once-sleepy island has become an exciting place for foodies. “Eat everywhere! Food is amazing, so many options from so many passionate cooks with the freshest of ingredients,” the aspiring chef says.

Among Camiguin’s best known restaurants are La Dolce Vita and Sapore Ristorante Italiano if you’re craving pizza and pasta, Guerrera if you’re up for some Asian street food, and Pedro’s if you want a taste of authentic Camiguinon cuisine. Kurma is known for their healthy soul food, especially their wide variety of omelettes and German sausages.

Garcia adds, “If you want to reconnect with your roots, meet genuinely happy and kind people, get a real break and relax, Camiguin is the place to be.”

Life lessons on the Island Born of Fire

The shift from a high flying and stressful corporate career to a simpler and more carefree lifestyle in Camiguin made him realize that life is not about what you have but how you live it.

“The people around you, how you treat them, and how we need to understand that the world is much much bigger than we think. Seeing how ‘simple’ life can be, showed me how complicated we make our lives and pretend like we understand. No one knows how to live life the ‘right’ way,” he says.

He also came to the realization that we are but a speck of dust in the world. “(I realized) how unimportant and irrelevant we are as individuals, we need to understand that we are part of life, not the center of it.”

If he hadn’t made the move, Garcia thinks that he would have remained depressed and unhealthy with everything that happened to him in the last couple of years.

He still goes to Manila every now and then to visit his dad. “I like going back for short periods of time to visit him. We play golf together, drive nice cars, dress up, meet old friends, but not for good. I think I will be in Camiguin for the rest of my life.”

Garcia arrived in Camiguin with a broken heart. Almost five years later, he is still on the island with a heart that is not only healed but is bursting with love for life, nature, and oneself.

Travel safely!

All tourist destinations in Camiguin have health and safety protocols in place to protect locals and visitors alike. Everyone is expected to comply by wearing face masks, regularly washing their hands, and practicing physical distancing.
