The Philippines is a sunny country rich in tropical flora and fauna. Adventures await the different islands to bring visitors closer to nature, with breathtaking vistas from verdant mountaintops and calming waves in the clear blue seas.

With its focus on building a sustainable, resilient, and inclusive tourism industry, the Department of Tourism has developed new products in different regions highlighting each area’s ecological wonders.

Enjoy the ultimate nature adventures as the perfect getaway from the busy urban life.

Here are some experiences that await in the Philippines’ beautiful eco-parks.

Take a subterranean boat ride

The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park in Palawan is a popular tourist site that showcases the rich biodiversity of a mountain-to-sea system. This majestic 22-hectare eco-park that is protected by the government and cared for by the local community is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list and is one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature.

One of the popular activities is a boat ride through the cave system that comprises the Puerto Princesa Underground River. Boatmen take visitors safely through the darkness of the long cave system, with stalactites and stalagmites forming a limestone landscape illuminated by the light attached to visitors’ hardhats.

This National Park is unique in that several ecosystems thrive in the pristine beauty of its mangrove forests in the Bay along with the flora and fauna of the caves and surrounding hardwood forest.

Experience bamboo forest bathing

The Bamboo eco-park in Baguio City’s St. Francis Xavier Seminary showcases several species of bamboo lined up to create its picture-perfect pathways. There is a feeling of serenity as one traverses the quiet red-fenced winding paths that encourage meditation among its benches that are placed strategically to offer calming views.

As it is located at an actual seminary, visitors have to maintain silence, with classes and Masses being held not far off. This makes the bamboo park an even more ideal place to de-stress. It is a beautiful place to commune with nature amid the cool climate of this mountainous region.

Bamboo eco-park.
Picnic among pine trees

The Bucari Pine Forest in Iloilo offers rugged highland adventures among pine trees. It is ideal for travelers who want to enjoy a bracing 45-minute hike in cool mountain air to reach the Masinga Viewing Deck and be rewarded with amazing views.

Explore the verdant hills through a footpath to discover waterfalls and meet with locals who are engaged in agriculture. There are picnic sheds that are available at the Tabionan Campsite, where one can also pitch a tent with the help of local caretakers and wait for the fireflies to come out at night.

Bucari Pine Forest.

Bucari Pine Forest.
Be a giant among trees

The Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary in Davao Oriental is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is a must-visit for nature lovers. It is a sanctuary for a wide variety of flora and fauna species – eight of which are found there. It is home to critically endangered trees, plants, and the iconic Philippine Eagle and Philippine Cockatoo.

Travelers can trek through a forest of centuries-old indigenous hardwood trees whose growth is stunted by the mineral rich volcanic soil. The average height of the trees, some of which have branches where orchids flourish, is at 4.5 feet. Locals serve as mountain guides, who are quick to point out interesting plants along the paths and help visitors spot the shy woodland animals. Before exploring the sanctuary, it is necessary to secure approval from the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB). A regulatory fee that supports conservation and protection of the area is charged upon entry.

Rock out in nature

Masungi Georeserve is a conservation area in Rizal Province that combines nature with extreme adventures among its rocky landscape. There are two routes that can be taken by trekkers. The Discovery Trail brings guests to the conservation area and come up close with the natural rock formations in the terrain. It features a walk through suspended bridges and the opportunity to take a daring group photo on a spiderweb that serves as a viewing platform for the Laguna de Bay.

The Legacy Trail takes visitors to the Masungi Geopark Project where restoration efforts are currently on-going. Here, they can participate in tree planting and tree nurturing activities, leaving a legacy for future generations to enjoy.

A visit to Masungi Geoserve is a fun combination of healthy physical activities while discovering the gifts of nature in a verdant forest setting.

Help save the sea turtles

While San Juan in La Union is known for its surfing, its beaches are also home to sea turtles such as the Olive Ridley that go ashore to lay their eggs. They have started to lay eggs further inland, so humans have to help the baby turtles hatch and return safely to the sea.

The Turtle Project, which is also known as Project Curma, has initiatives such as beach cleanups and a turtle release activity from the eggs that they rescue and care for in their hatchery. Volunteers are needed to help release thousands of baby turtles every hatching season.

This awesome experience helps to emphasize the value of keeping our seas clean and protecting the valuable biodiversity of marine life.

Surrounding yourself in nature holds many wellness benefits, from reducing stress to enhancing the immune system. In the Philippines, it is possible to experience this feeling of wellbeing while traveling to fun and nature-friendly destinations.

The Philippines Department of Tourism promotes sustainable travel as it works towards inclusive growth and the protection of the natural and cultural heritage, and safeguards the integrity and diversity of the country’s national resources.

Sustainable tourism ensures that destinations, especially nature-based, remain intact and will be preserved for future travelers.

Travel to these exciting destinations at the heart of nature and create a positive impact on its environment and local communities.

Trek through Masungi Georeserve, Rizal

The sprawling landscape of the Masungi Georeserve is a conservation area that is a sanctuary for hundreds of native wildlife species. Take a three-hour trek on the Discovery Trail through the pathways with lush vegetation and limestone formations, walk over suspended bridges to take snapshots of your adventure, and crawl onto a spider-web view deck to get a spectacular view of the nature park and the expanse of the country’s largest lake, Laguna de Bay. For a deeper appreciation of the conservation efforts of the local community, take the Legacy Trail and participate in the planting and nurturing of the trees that will be part of the reforestation of the area.

Go Dolphin Watching in Bohol

Enjoy a day out at sea to watch the marine life in the clear blue waters of Pamilacan Island in Bohol. Visitors can catch various species of dolphins and whales such as Risso’s dolphin, Spinner dolphin, Bottlenose dolphins, Spotted dolphins, Bryde’s whales, sperm whales, pilot whales, melon-headed whale, pygmy killer whale, and even blue whales splash around in their playground.

Sustainable tourism in the area has helped keep the dolphins and whales safer from commercial fishing. In the past years, the waters off the island were prime fishing waters for whale hunters who saw the activity as a source of income. Through marine preservation laws, community education and involvement, and using tourism as an alternative source of livelihood, whaling boats are now used as a comfortable ride for tourists on whale and dolphin-watching trips, instead. With their expertise in spotting whales and dolphins for hunting, the boatmen are now excellent tour guides and champions of marine conservation and preservation.

Swim at Campawan Curtain Falls, Davao Oriental

A trek through the forested area in the town of Baganga in Davao Oriental leads to the majestic Campawan Waterfalls. The au naturel beauty of nature that resembles a wide curtain that flows about 20 feet into a shallow basin of water is a quick retreat for a cool dip.

With its potential as one of Davao Oriental’s attractions, efforts have been initiated to transform the place as an eco-park for locals and tourists to enjoy.

Kayak in El Nido, Palawan

Palawan is a paradise for kayakers, with placid waters along El Nido’s lagoons and coves that are teeming with marine life in crystal clear water. Kayaking through the limestone formations at the Small Lagoon and the Big Lagoon on Miniloc Island is an unforgettable, surreal experience. To help protect the ecological balance of its popular destinations, the local government has introduced measures such as enforcing a carrying capacity policy for the Small and Big Lagoons. Under the same policy, motorized boats are barred from anchoring at the entrance of the Small Lagoon and from entering the Big Lagoon, except those issued with special permits for carrying persons with disabilities, senior citizens, and pregnant women. With the growth of tourism in their Province, the communities of Palawan are aware of the need to take care of their natural resources, and they are encouraging visitors to travel sustainably through what’s known as the country’s ‘last frontier’.

Trek the La Union nature and eco trails

La Union Province is a charming paradise waiting to be discovered. A 20-minute trek through lush vegetation leads to Tangadan Falls in San Gabriel. This journey through the tropical weather of the province is rewarded by a refreshing dip in the falls’ cooling waters. Practice the art of forest bathing at the Arosip Ecotrail in Bacnotan, with its towering trees that offer shade along the 45-minute walk to the peak.

The cascading Tuddingan Falls in Naguilian are accessible through a cemented pathway, making it hike-friendly for beginners. Romantic nature-lovers can take a trip to Mt. Puraw in Bauang and catch the sunrise among a sea of clouds. Balay Anito Falls in Santol translates to Home of the Spirits, and it is easy to be enchanted at its picture-perfect view of water cascading over rock formations.

While Siargao draws tourists for its surfing waves, it is also home to the country’s largest contiguous mangrove stand. The Del Carmen Mangrove Forest offers a boat tour that takes travellers along the brackish waters that cover around 4,871 hectares of mangroves that hosts 27 out of the 70 mangrove species in the world. This is the habitat of rare and endangered flora and fauna, most especially the endangered Crocodylus Porosus or Saltwater crocodile. While the local communities have taken to cutting these mangroves for firewood out of economic necessity, they are now finding new livelihood from tourism, fishing, crab harvesting, and seaweed farming. Through education efforts from the local government and non-profit organizations, they are being taught the value of protecting their mangroves, so that its benefits will be enjoyed by the generations to come.

Heritage Churches to Consider for Your Visita Iglesia

The Holy Week is an important occasion for Catholics. In the Philippines, about 83% of the population belong to the Roman Catholic faith.

One of the traditions that Filipinos have been practicing is the Visita Iglesia, wherein the faithful visit at least seven different churches (sometimes even 14) on the evening of Maundy Thursday or on Good Friday, and pray before the Blessed Sacrament.

During the pandemic, Catholics resorted to virtual or online Visita Iglesia. But now that travel restrictions have eased, Filipinos can go back to practicing their Lenten traditions.

Metro Manila has over a hundred churches, some are heritage structures, such as the San Agustin Church, the Manila Cathedral, the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene (Quiapo Church), and the Minor Basilica of St. Lorenzo Ruiz (Binondo Church), to name a few. But if you wish to discover other historical churches and be spiritually and culturally enriched with their own stories, here are some in nearby provinces that you can include in your itinerary.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish (Barasoain Church)
City of Malolos, Bulacan

A national shrine, the historic Barasoain Church was built in1885. It served as the session hall of the Malolos Congress in 1898 and the birthplace of the First Philippine Republic, the first in the whole of Asia, in 1899. The Universidad Literaria Cientifica de Filipinas, the first state university established by the Filipinos, was housed in its convent in 1898. The Barasoain Church Historical Landmark boasts of a light and sound museum called Museo ng Republika ng 1899 which is being managed by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP).

Founded in 1572, St. John the Baptist Church is the oldest church in Bulacan. The church had been a witness to the Filipinos’ struggle against Spanish, American, and Japanese rule.

Inside the church is a tunnel that, according to history, was used by priests during the Spanish regime to keep gold, religious statues, and ornate jewelry hidden from the sight of treasure hunters. Likewise, it is in this tunnel where Filipino revolutionaries and Spanish soldiers were buried during the war.

Saint Dominic de Guzman Church (Abucay Church)
Abucay, Bataan

Built in 1588, Abucay Church is considered as the oldest in Bataan and one of the oldest churches in the country. The structure of the church was made of red bricks with adobe stones that withstood the test of time. It was where Tomas Pinpin, the first Filipino printer, printed the earliest books in the Philippines together with Fr. Francisco Blancas de San Jose, his co-author, and teacher.

Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Church (Orani Church)
Orani, Bataan

Enshrined in this church is the wooden statue of Virgen Milagrosa del Rosario del Pueblo de Orani. This iconic pilgrimage church sits right in the middle of Orani.

The original structure built in 1714 was initially made from nipa leaves, molave wood and bamboo. The chapel was eventually reconstructed with stronger materials like adobe and stone. It was damaged by an earthquake in 1852 and razed by fire in 1938.

The Orani Church served as witness to many historical events including the Philippine Revolution and the Japanese occupation during the World War II.

On September 09, 2019, Pope Francis of the Vatican granted this church the title of Minor Basilica.

The church serves not only as a reminder of the tragic Mt. Pinatubo eruption, but also as a testament of Bacolorenos’ strong faith and resilience. The church was constructed by the Augustinian Friars in 1576, with rich decoration that depicts the advanced stage of Baroque and Rococo.

On September 3, 1995, lahar mudflow from the slopes of Mount Pinatubo which erupted on June 15, 1991, covered the town and buried the San Guillermo Church in half. The church, whose remaining features were preserved and maintained, is still being used as a place of worship.

It is dubbed as the “Sistine Chapel of the Philippines” because of its interiors, particularly the intricate paintings on the church’s walls and ceiling that are comparable to the frescos of Vatican’s Sistine Chapel. These paintings are attributed to several local artists, including Macario Ligon, Victor Ramos, and Simon Flores. Through its intricately carved wooden main door, wooden flooring, and some wooden statues, the church pays homage to the woodcarving heritage of the province, with Betis being the center of this craft and industry.

The National Museum and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) declared the Baroque-inspired Betis Church a National Cultural Treasure in 2001.

The first structure was built by the Jesuits when the parish was established under the patronage of Our Lady of The Assumption in 1618. During the Spanish-Dutch War, the church was destroyed for fear of becoming a Dutch fort. After the war, the church was rebuilt using wood, then was renovated to stone.

This church is the only heritage structure in the municipality of Maragondon and was declared by the National Museum as a National Cultural Treasure.

This is the parish church of the Municipality of Kawit in the Province of Cavite. First built made of wood in 1638, it is considered one of the oldest churches in the Philippines. The construction of the current church started in 1737 and was restored in 1990. Located few meters away from the mansion of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, this is the church where the president of the First Philippine Republic was baptized.

Our Lady of Light Parish (Cainta Church)
Cainta, Rizal

The original stone structure was built in 1707. From the time of its erection as a parish, it belonged to the Archdiocese of Manila. It was placed under the Diocese of Antipolo in 1983. The church suffered damages due to an earthquake in 1853. When the church was burned downed during the Filipino-American War in 1899, it took more than 60 years before restoration efforts started. The facade was kept untouched.

Cainta Church was declared a historical site by the NHCP for its significant role during the Filipino-American War.

San Idelfonso de Toledo Parish (Tanay Church)
Tanay, Rizal

The first parish was actually established in 1606. From then, it had its own history of destruction and reconstruction. The present church was completed in 1783. Retablos with several images—particularly of Our Lady of Anguish, the Immaculate Conception, Saint Joseph, Saint Peter of Alcantara, the Baptism of Jesus Christ, and Saint Ildephonsus of Toledo—adorn the altar. Carvings of the 14 Stations of the Cross inside the church are masterpieces believed to be created by native artists of the town.

The parish houses the relic of a piece of a bone of Saint Ildephonsus of Toledo. It was declared by the NCCA as a National Cultural Treasure.

More commonly known as the Lipa Cathedral, this renaissance church, which was established in the 1700s, serves as the seat of the Archdiocese of Lipa. The structure features stained glass windows, a painted ceiling with a domed center, and a grand altar lit by round glass panes in front.

The original structure was made of light materials and was located on the shore of Taal Lake. It was destroyed when Taal Volcano erupted in 1754. Reconstruction efforts for the transplanted church started in 1779 and was completed sometime between 1865 to 1894. After World War II, the cathedral suffered massive damages and underwent intensive renovation afterwards.

This magnificent landmark sits atop a hill right at the center of the town. It is named after the patron saint of Taal, Saint Martin of Tours. The dominant religious structure measures 96 meters in length and 45 meters in width.

The Basilica’s size and Baroque façade is awe-inspiring. Its extraordinary structure is even more captivating with the addition of dome ceilings hand painted with intricate detail. Perhaps the most outstanding element is the illuminating altar wall made with shining sterling silver and gold, symbolizing the sacred liberation of the tabernacle.

The pandemic has brought the importance of mental and physical fitness to the forefront of people’s consciousness. For that reason, wellness tourism or “travel associated with wellbeing through physical, psychological, and spiritual activities” is expected to be the next big thing.

Not many are aware that Luzon, the largest, most populous island at the northern end of the Philippines, is a haven of health resorts. Both Filipinos and foreign visitors to the country in search of wellness retreats will be able to find many options here.

Here are but a few of the most highly-rated wellness destinations in Luzon.

Nurture Wellness Village

Pathway leading to the villas of Nurture Wellness Village.
At the core of this internationally-acclaimed health resort is “ecotherapy,” a concept of healing with nature.

Angono is dubbed as the art capital of the Philippines and has produced a number of renowned creative minds. This includes two National Artists: Carlos ‘Botong’ Francisco for Visual Arts and Lucio San Pedro for Music.

This municipality in Rizal traces its roots to the Angono Petroglyphs in Binangonan, discovered by Francisco in 1965 on a camping trip with the Boy Scouts of the Philippines. It is believed to be the oldest known artworks in the Philippines and is said to date back to the Neolithic Period or New Stone Age. During the Spanish era, artists like Juan Senson and Pedro Piñon thrived in Angono.

Angono has nurtured more than 500 painters alone, along with countless other artists in the fields of music, literature, film, theater, crafts, and more. Apart from notable creatives, Angono also boasts galleries, museums, studios, and artist groups.

The arts and culture scene of Rizal remains vibrant today, with artists, families, and museums preserving the province’s heritage. Here’s how they’re doing it:

Nemesio Miranda of Nemiranda
31 Doña Aurora St, Angono

Nemiranda is known as the father of imaginative figurism.
Nemesio “Nemi” Miranda Jr., or Nemiranda, is known for his works depicting Filipino scenes. He is also recognized for painting in a style called imaginative figurism. This means that he paints his subjects through his imagination, with no references.

Miranda is the artist behind the EDSA Shrine Mural, History of the Philippine Army at Fort Bonifacio, and the Dambana ng Kagitingan, the last of which honors veterans and soldiers from Angono during World War II. Today, the artist runs Nemiranda Arthouse and Museum, which is also the home of the Art Cafe.

Nemiranda has played a leading role in the province’s art scene as one of the founders of the Angono Atelier’s Association in 1975. It’s the first art organization in the municipality, and his studio became a watering hole and workshop venue for its members. They also established the Angono Junior Ateliers, which became the training ground for student painters.

The group also started the Angono Arts Festival, which is celebrated every November in time for Botong Francisco’s birthday. During the festival, an exhibit, student art contest, and workshops are held.

The artist opened the Nemiranda Art Cafe to serve clients. Today, it is also a tourist attraction. Photo by SinoPinas courtesy of the Department of Tourism.

Nemiranda also helped form the Higante Makers and Sculptors Society. This group helped institutionalize the Higantes Festival, which is famous for the giant papier-mâché puppets that would parade the streets. For six years, the artist ran the Angono School for the Arts, which promoted an art-based education.

When quarantine restrictions were relaxed, the Angono Ateliers Association organized monthly exhibits for the group.

Photo by SinoPinas courtesy of the Department of Tourism.

The Blancos are unique because all of its members are artists. The father is the celebrated artist Jose “Pitok” Blanco, who trained all seven of his kids to paint. Even his wife, Loreto “Loring” Blanco is an artist, but began late in life when their son Peter Paul said he would only paint if his mother did, too.

The Blanco Family Art Museum houses their works, from the time the second generation were kids up to adulthood. Among the must-sees is one of Peter Paul’s artworks, which he created when he was just 11 months old.

Pitok was inspired to build the gallery when the family exhibited at the National Museum in 1978. They were the first family of artists to do so.

The Blancos are known for their style of realism and choosing to paint Filipino culture and traditions. What they differ in is the theme.

Pitok focuses on nature and culture, while Loring expresses the love of a mother for her child. Gay paints mother and child scenes, while Peter Paul depicts his hobbies on the canvas. Jan paints feathered animals, Joy illustrates the human anatomy, Noel dives into water themes, and Glenn draws landscapes. Michael, who is also the museum director, is skilled in human expressions.

Photo by SinoPinas courtesy of the Department of Tourism.

Curiously, not one of the kids pursued fine arts in college. According to Pitok, “bakit pa kayo kukuha ng Fine Arts, pwede naman ako na yung magturo sa inyo?” (“Why would you take Fine Arts when I could teach you?”) Their degrees range from literature to journalism, commerce, and mass communications. Their idea of family bonding is having a painting session, guided by Pitok.

The family hopes that they can inspire the next generation of Filipinos through their art. They support new artists through monthly exhibits, and also conduct workshops during the summer. The museum opens its doors to artistic endeavors, such as rehearsals for theater arts, lectures, and more.

Carlos “Botong” Francisco, one of the country’s most distinguished muralists, brought pride to Rizal when he was posthumously conferred the National Artist Award in 1973. Some of his famous pieces include Harana, Bayanihan, First Mass at Limasawa, The Martyrdom of Rizal, and more. His body of work depicts the mythical world of the Filipino and its history.

His residence in Angono is open to the public. None of his original works, however, remain there since they are in private collections and places such as the Far Eastern University campus and National Museum.

Still, guests can admire his modernist style through reproductions, along with sketches, photographs, materials, and souvenirs from the films he worked on. His National Artist award is also on display.

The residence also supports local artists by exhibiting their murals for guests to see and appreciate.

Francisco’s spirit also lives on outside his home. Along Doña Aurora, where the residence is located, local craftsmen translated the National Artist’s works on concrete walls.

According to Botong’s grandson Carlos “Totong” Francisco, who manages the home and studio-turned museum, residents usually agree because it’s done for free. Sometimes they even request specific artworks to be etched on their walls.

Photo by SinoPinas courtesy of the Department of Tourism.

It seems like Balaw Balaw Restaurant and Art Gallery preserves the culture of Rizal through the food they serve. Vocalan, a painter and sculptor, opened the restaurant to serve his visitors. At the time, he would cook for his guests until one of them suggested that he put a small canteen.

Vocalan launched Balaw Balaw in 1982 and it grew into a gallery, museum, and fine dining restaurant. Today, Balaw Balaw is one of Angono’s top tourist attractions.

One of their star dishes is the minaluto, a local version of paella. It’s inspired by the meal farmers and fishermen brought to the fields and lakes. They would wrap hot rice, fish, salted egg, and a tomato in a leaf, and eat it for lunch. Balaw Balaw serves it bilao-style (in a woven tray) and is enjoyed by a group.

They also have three types of rice: the Balaw Balaw Yellow Rice, made with atsuete oil (annatto) and margarine; the Balaw Balaw Pink Rice, cooked with burong hipon (pickled shrimp); and the Bagoong Rice (fermented shrimp paste). Due to their proximity to Laguna Lake, seafood dishes featuring hito (catfish) and dalag (snakehead murrel) dishes are popular, too.

Photo by SinoPinas courtesy of the Department of Tourism

The museum’s name is derived from pinto, the Filipino word for door. Not only is the museum a place to exhibit the collection of neurologist and patron Dr. Joven Cuanang, it also serves as the guest’s door to Philippine contemporary art.

The story of Pinto is actually years in the making. Dr. Cuanang began collecting in the 1980s and established himself as a big supporter of the Filipino artistic community.

A group of young artists called the Salingpusas were introduced to Dr. Cuanang. The Filipino term salingpusa roughly means someone who is allowed to participate in a game even if he or she is not necessarily equipped to play it. This group of artists struggled to get their works exhibited and took on odd jobs to survive.

The doctor would host them in his weekend home in Antipolo so they could draw. In 1991, Dr. Cuanang hosted shows for them in his Silangan Gardens, which would later become Pinto. He would invite his friends and colleagues to view the pieces, which were then hung on clotheslines.

The museum has been included in a list of the world’s most Instagrammed museums. Photo by SinoPinas courtesy of the Department of Tourism.

The artists turned Silangan Gardens into their headquarters, with some living there for over a decade. Soon, their works flourished and many won awards.

In 2001, Silangan Gardens was transformed into the Pinto Art Gallery. Ten years later, Dr. Cuanang turned it into the Pinto Art Museum and opened his collection to the public.

As for the young salingpusas, who once struggled to get their works exhibited, they would become some of the most important names in art: Elmer Borlongan, Emmanuel Garibay, Mark Justiniani, Antonio Leaño, and Ferdie Montemayor, to name a few.

Pinto hosts rotating exhibits to continue promoting contemporary Filipino artists. Because of its beautiful interiors and picturesque outdoor spaces, Pinto routinely makes it to Artnet’s World’s Most Instagrammed Museums list.

A natural attraction that is 30 minutes away from Luljetta’s, this park is filled with trees and cottages, which congregate around 12-meter-high falls.

“Hinulugang Taktak” roughly translates to “dropped bell.” During the Spanish era, a priest from a nearby church supposedly dropped a taktak (or large bell), which at that time, was causing an eerie and uncomfortable sound.

This nature lovers’ paradise is home to 11 families of tree species, with 234 individual shrubs. There are also kingfishers, owls, and swifts in the area. Hunyango (chameleon), Philippine Phyton, and flying lizards are also present in the park.

Photo by SinoPinas courtesy of the Department of Tourism.

Inside Pinto Art Museum in Antipolo sits a 2,000-sqm garden. Pinto Arboretum was built because museum owner Dr. Joven Cunanang wished to educate Filipinos about the rich diversity of Philippine plants, and rescue species of shrubs that are endangered. It houses endemic flora, including aroids, ferns, palms, and figs.

Curator and avid ecologist Ronald Achacoso, who takes care of around 500 plants there, will give a tour when you come over to visit.

“It’s my landscape obra (masterpiece). The terrain is my canvas, and the native species are my palette,” he says of the Arboretum, adding that he maintains it with a misting system and an automatic timer.

Among the interesting shrubs in the area is Puno ng Lipa (Lipa Tree), which has short irritant hairs on its twigs that can make your skin sore and itchy when you touch it, Achacoso says. Mountain Agoho, a slender evergreen plant, is also found in the area.

You can take a look at the pale-barked Tangisang Bayauak, which translates to “crying monitor lizard” in Filipino. According to the curator, these reptiles can’t climb the tall spreading shrub, making them cry, hence the name.

The place also has Begonia or ornamental houseplants that grow in cooler climates, Selaginella that is distinguishable with its scalelike leaves, and Alocasia Portei, a tropical plant with heavily scalloped fronds.

The general admission is Php 500 for adults. Students and senior citizens can avail themselves of discounted rates of Php 250 and Php 400, respectively. Book your tour three days before your intended date of visit.

This sprawling outdoor facility, owned and operated by Alternergy Philippines Holding Corporation, is considered the first-ever wind farm outside Ilocos Norte. A total of 27 turbines there produce 54 megawatts of power, providing electricity to about 66,000 households in nearby provinces and cities including Metro Manila.

People visit there mainly to take in the view and fresh air and shoot a lot of photos. (Note: drones are not allowed in the area for they may put the turbines at risk.) There are no entrance fees at Pililla Windmills, but scheduling a visit is a must. Just send a message to their official Facebook page to inquire.
