While it is famous for its mountains and secluded islands, Quezon has so much more to offer. This is particularly good for those looking for a well-deserved break, as it is filled with little pockets of peace. And, since it is close to Metro Manila, being only two to three hours away, you won’t be stressed trying to get there.

Scenic view of the valley in Dolores, Quezon as seen in Bangkong Kahoy Valley.
Many find peace when surrounded by nature. And one underrated municipality that has this in spades is Dolores. The town managed to stay open to visitors during the pandemic and is home to Mt. Banahaw and Mt. Cristobal.

Bangkong Kahoy Valley Welcome Sign.
One place to check out the flora and fauna in this municipality is at Bangkong Kahoy Valley Nature Retreat and Field Study Center. Here, around a thousand species of plants and animals happily reside, including the elusive Whiskered Pitta.

Lukong Valley Farm Campsite.
If you want a taste of farming life, you might want to visit Lukong Valley Farm, which has accommodations above a field full of Dragon Fruit trees. You can choose to reside at one of their charming villas or go camping by the trees. (Don’t worry, there are comfort rooms around!)

If you want pristine beaches and gorgeous white sand, you might want to head on over to Mauban, particularly in Cagbalete Island.

Kayaking at Dona Choleng Beach Resort, Cagbalete Island.
The island used to be one of the go-to summer destinations pre-pandemic, with water activities such as kayaking offered to guests.

Yang-In shoreline during low tide. Photo by SinoPinas courtesy of the Department of Tourism.

Aside from Cagbalete, you might want to visit Yang-In sandbar. Stretching for at least 5 kilometers, the spot is great for snorkeling, with starfishes and sea urchins surrounding the area. Aside from snorkeling, you can also take a walk along the hundreds of mangrove trees present in the area.

If you aren’t fond of mountains or beaches, General Nakar might be better for you.

The town is better explored either on foot or by riding a habal-habal. Life here is generally simple, with no fast food chains around, but quite a few carinderia serving Quezon’s signature Sinantolan.

General Nakar still does offer more exciting pursuits. You can try their off-road motorcycle trails or trek through undisturbed forests on the way to Depalyon Falls, which is situated in a ravine.

Going in this falls is not an easy feat as the trek there takes more than two hours, and involves crossing through neck-deep streams.

Tulaog Cave, General Nakar. Photo by SinoPinas courtesy of the Department of Tourism.

The more religiously-inclined might want to take the hour-long ride to the “growling” cave of Tulaog.

Here, Catholics would do a pilgrimage in honor of Virgin Mary during Holy Week. Tulaog is also known as a sacred place for the Dumagat, who pray and worship their god Mukadeppat in a secluded part of the cave.

How to get to Quezon:

If you are coming from Metro Manila, you can take the Marikina-Rizal-Laguna-Quezon (Marilaque) Hi-Way for a scenic road trip going to Quezon. You can also take the Laguna-Quezon route passing through Pagsanjan-Lucban road. If you are coming from the Muntinlupa-Sta. Rosa area, your easiest route is through Batangas-Quezon road.

Travel safely!

All these destinations have health and safety protocols in place to protect locals and visitors alike. Everyone is expected to comply by wearing face masks, regularly washing their hands, and practicing physical distancing.

To check out up-to-date information regarding local destinations that are open and the safety protocols and requirements needed for each location, you may visit www.philippines.travel/safetrip or download the Travel Philippines app at app.philippines.travel or the Google Playstore.

San Cristobal, Dolores was one of the few municipalities in Quezon that opened its borders to visitors at the height of the pandemic. Despite this, tourism was still badly affected, a major cause of concern since this is the main source of income here.

View of Mt. Banahaw from Bangkong Kahoy. Photo by SinoPinas courtesy of the Department of Tourism.

The locals, thankfully, were able to turn their odds around by allowing TV networks to have safe, lock-in tapings in their town. Because of its charming barrio feels, mountainous surroundings, and peaceful atmosphere, the town became a go-to for shows like Niño Niña on TV5.

Spiritual destination

One of the main draws of Dolores is tied to the Catholic faith.

Many from around the country flock to this town during the Lenten Season to pay homage to Our Lady of Sorrows. Also known as Nuestra Señora de los Dolores de Quezon, her intercession is believed to lead to miracles.

Our Lady of Sorrows is known for its depiction of the Blessed Virgin Mary with a long veil, teary eyes, showing a sad expression on her face, and prayerful hands holding a handkerchief.

Nuestra Señora de los Dolores de Quezon is also known as the patron saint of Overseas Filipino Workers. Most people pray for the intercession to have a better life or to help them face the challenges that they are encountering.

Every Friday of the week, a tradition called Pangkuan rites is held to attend the mass in honor of Our Lady of Sorrows.

During March or April, devotees and pilgrims from around Quezon and its neighboring provinces flock to the town to celebrate Viernes de Dolores, which is commemorated through a Holy Mass and “Turumba”, a form of dance to praise the town’s patron saint.

While Catholicism plays a big role in Dolores, the town remains open to different religions and beliefs. Some devotees also go to this town to perform rituals in the vast forests surrounding its municipality.

“Pamumuwesto” is one of the common practices done in the mountains. People usually go up to Mt. Banahaw and find these “Puestos” or Holy places during Holy Week so they can pray for repentance on their sins and ask for divine intervention to help them face the challenges in their life.

There are more than 100 puestos on Mt. Banahaw which are mostly found in Dolores.

Another ritual done in the forest at the foot of Mt. Banahaw is the charging of amulets. People believe that getting amulets or charging their amulets in the sacred mountain will help protect the bearer of these charms from sickness.

Lush surroundings

While Mt. Banahaw and Mt. San Cristobal has been closed to visitors for years now, there are still a lot of activities that you can do in Dolores.

There’s Sta. Lucia Falls, which is both a pilgrimage and trekking site. There is a grotto where you can pray and light up a candle for your intercession. Religious statues and inscriptions are also present as you trek toward the main falls where you might stumble upon some people praying on the side.

During Holy Week, devotees usually visit this place to meditate and pray. You can also take a dip or swim around the waterfalls, surrounded by rock formations and forests.

You can check out Gunao Lake if you want to do a boat ride or have a picnic with a view. This lake is situated right in the middle of a vast forest. It has water lilies growing in the side and you can have a balsa or bamboo raft ride here for an afternoon stroll.

Bangkong Kahoy Valley Nature Retreat and Field Study Center, on the other hand, is located between two mountains.

Bangkong Kahoy Camp Site.
Pre-pandemic, the center’s owner Dion Pullan regularly organizes a music fair called Banahaw Tugtugan. The event is known to see local and international attendees, who pay a relatively small fee to watch Filipino musical acts.

Funds from the event help Bangkong Kahoy go to giving kids access to proper education and assist in preserving the environment, especially Dolores’ two mountains.

Bangkong Kahoy offers a different experience to its visitors. You are surrounded by fresh air, flowers such as hydrangeas and daisies, and welcomed ponies and the resident St. Bernard.

For a small fee, you can even pick fresh hydrangeas or raspberries while touring the place. Students who enjoy studying nature are welcome here.

Being able to commune with nature is something we all sorely missed in the past year and it is understandable that many of us are yearning to get a taste of the great outdoors.

Just over three hours away from Metro Manila, Quezon might be the best option for you. The eighth biggest province in the country is blessed with beautiful mountains, breathtaking clear seas, luscious forests, and majestic falls.

Here are some places you can go to:

RAFTING AT TANAUAN WHITE RIVER RAFTING
Brgy. Tanauan, Real, Quezon

Tanauan White River Rafting in action. Photo by SinoPinas courtesy of the Department of Tourism.

While Cagayan de Oro is top of mind when it comes to white water rafting in the country, this river in Quezon doesn’t disappoint in giving its visitors an exhilarating experience. About a three-hour drive from Metro Manila, the ride starts after an easy 15-minute trek down to Tignoan river.

The Tanauan White River Rafting started with the initiative of the locals in the area. The boatmen used to be illegal loggers who used the natural resources of Real to earn an income. Since they wanted to change their ways and be more aware of how they take care of the environment, these boatmen bought old 10-wheeler truck wheels to use as raft and started this business that not only gave an income to them but also increased the town’s tourism.

Going on a river rafting, the boatmen along with the tour guides will be riding with you to ensure your safety. The boats used for the rafting are also secured and well-maintained as part of the Php 500 fee will be used for the raft’s maintenance.

You can visit Tanauan White River Rafting all year long. If you want to enjoy the scenic ride and see beautiful views of trees surrounding the river, you can visit during summer when waves are calmer and you can relax while enjoying your trip.

If you are more of an adrenaline junkie, ber-months is always the best time to experience exhilarating waves in the river.

Opening Hours: 5:00 am to 4:00 pm (last call for rafting)

Price per ride: Php 500

Quezon is the largest province in the Southern Tagalog Mainland, a region that also includes Cavite, Laguna, and Batangas. While there are many towns within Quezon that have become tourist destinations—Lucban, Tayabas, Lucena, and Atimonan—there are others that don’t get the same amount of attention but deserve the foot traffic.

Wanting to change that, locals who are passionate about Real, Infanta, and General Nakar created the Metro Reina Group. This cooperative, according to BIPCO Ecopark’s Lito Coronacion, aims to highlight what these towns have to offer, hopefully attracting more tourists in the process.

Coronacion, along with the rest of the members of Metro Reina, wishes that more and more people will include Real, Infanta, and General Nakar in their itineraries as more borders begin to open up.

Why do these towns deserve more visitors? What can be seen and enjoyed in these towns? Quite a lot according to Metro Reina. Each of these municipalities have attractions for different persuasions. Here are a few of them:

About two hours away from Rizal,Real’s main draw is in the water. It makes for a quick beach trip, or a weekend water sports adventure.

TANAUAN WHITE RIVER RAFTING

Tanauan White River Rafting.
Apart from going on a wild ride, the river and its surrounding areas make a fantastic picnic site. This is especially true in the summer when the water is a lot calmer. Then, you’d be able to appreciate the river’s surroundings more: coconut trees, grassland spots filled with flowers and rock formations for quick stop overs, a lake where you can take a dip in, among other things.

More adventurous spirits, though, should think of heading there from November until February. This is the peak of the Amihan, or trade winds season, when the water is a lot more aggressive.

Developed around 2010, this destination was opened to boost tourism in Tingnoan. A two-tier waterfall surrounded by vast trees and large rocks, Balagbag Falls is popular among motorcycle riders and campers around Real. Having a deep pool, visitors usually cliff dive here. But to ensure everyone’s safety, this is not allowed anymore.

For Php40.00, you can head over to the Falls, which is just a five-minute walk from the National Highway. A nice way to cool off on a hot day, the spot also has cottages around it where families and friends can gather for meals. Just make sure to tidy up as you go, and leave alcohol at home as they are not allowed at the premises.

If you want quieter pursuits, you can practice yoga or meditation within the resort’s peaceful compound. There is also a quaint restaurant called The Food Shack that sells Chicken and Waffles– which is their best-seller, Calamari, and Fish N’ Chips.

Aside from The Food Shack, you can also request for a grill set up in the resort if you want to cook some barbecue. They allow bringing outside food in the Surf Camp without a corkage fee.

An hour away from the Watch Tower of General Nakar, Tulaog Cave is situated on a secluded island where Catholics around Quezon would do their Holy Week pilgrimage.

Locals claim that you can hear a howl around the island that can warn those living there that the weather was about to turn bad. Actually, the name of island is taken from how the cave there is “nagtutulaog,” or “howling” in English.

Divine power exists on this island, many say, so much so that amulets and charms can be “charged” here during full moons. The cave is also a sacred place of worship for the seafaring Dumagat tribe living in the more secluded part of the island.

Before the pandemic, they perform a ritual dance when August rolls around to celebrate the discovery of Tulaog Cave. People around Quezon who know about the festivity usually visit and watch the Dumagat honor the place.

HOW TO GET THERE

Quezon is only a few hours away from Metro Manila. For those coming from Rizal, going through the Marikina-Rizal-Laguna-Quezon (Marilaque) highway is the best route to take. For those who are from the south (Alabang, San Pedro, and Sta. Rosa), you might want to take SLEX-Batangas. As for those who are coming from within Laguna, the Laguna-Lucban road will easily bring you to Quezon.

The Metro Reina Group advises tourists to check with the guidelines of local government units before traveling. Health declaration forms and a negative RT-PCR must be presented upon entry to ensure safety during this pandemic. Aside from the forms to be submitted, safety protocols such as wearing of masks, face shields, and implementation of social distancing should be strictly followed.

Two things that Filipinos often look for in their travel plans are ways to relax and a good deal. And, with more borders opening and more of us getting vaccinated, many are just itching to get away from the stresses of the last year.

Metro Manila folks don’t have to look too far for a stress-free trip that won’t break the bank. Quezon is less than four hours by car from our capital, and has a string of budget-friendly accommodations. Here are just a few of them:

Appleton Little Paradise Beach Resort
Sitio Talisay, Barangay Capalong, Real, Quezon

Apart from the beach and the river, guests can also relax or take a dip in the pool surrounded by towering palms.
When asked what she loves most about Cagbalete, Paradiso Amadeo owner Riza Pansacola Regis points to the many colors of the island. And if you visit her resort, you might just agree.

Perched on a stretch of cream-colored sand, the resort has a stunning view of the ocean, mountain, and sky that looks like layered hues of blue on a canvas.

The 15 bamboo cottages inside her calachuchi-fenced retreat feature banig walls, hand-painted shutters, all-white drapes, linens, and translucent curtains. While the resort makes do without many of the amenities you would see in other lodgings, it has its own appeal.

For example, you have the option for a fan or an air-conditioned hut. But the island’s cool night breeze and the sound of gentle waves would be enough to make you feel relaxed and sleepy.

If you crave Filipino comfort food, a binalot-style meal package for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks is available. Their excellent cook is said to make one of the best adobo and pancit bihon on the island.

At the beachfront, you can choose to get a deep, soothing massage, or sleep lying on a hammock. The resort can also arrange for island hopping and kayaking activities.

More than a year spent in quarantine has allowed many of us to think beyond ourselves to the world around us. There is more to life than just our own needs and desires, and connecting to something higher has become a goal of many.

With local tourism starting to pick up again, there are those looking for more than just a fun weekend. Many are thinking of ways to venture out safely and make a big, positive impact at the same time. Call it traveling with a purpose if you will.

If you are one such person, we suggest taking a short drive to Quezon. The province has a number of activities that allow you to do more than just have a good time. Here are four immersive vacations spots that can add purpose to your travels:

Protect the environment at Bangkong Kahoy Valley Nature Retreat
Barangay. Kinabuhayan, Dolores, Quezon

Set within the protected area of Mounts Banahaw and San Cristobal, Bangkong Kahoy is an ecological sanctuary open to anyone looking to commune with nature. It houses self-cooling stone cottages, open-air cabins, and campgrounds surrounded by trees. Here, you can stay and learn about the importance of preserving the country’s rich and unique biodiversity.

Environmentalist Dion Pullan, who considers himself a caretaker, curates an immersive tour for guests to appreciate and understand the rich flora and fauna around them. Here you can engage with bright turquoise jade vines, meet centuries-old trees, and hear stories about the rare whiskered pitta, which are all endemic to Luzon’s tropical forests.

Pullan always ends his tours with a strong message of green responsibility and sustainable living, and will urge to help spread the word.

Other outdoor activities include hiking and trekking, bird viewing and photography, raspberry picking, and horseback riding. It also has several vantage points to view the verdant landscape of the Banahaw ridge.

While you can cook your own meals, their restaurant serves delicious all-organic food and vegan options with locally grown ingredients.

This one-hour scenic boat ride provides an immersive overview of the protected mangrove sanctuary. Photo by SinoPinas courtesy of the Department of Tourism.

About a hundred hectares of abandoned ponds are now home to lush mangrove forests, thanks to the efforts of the Binonoan Producers Cooperative (BIPCO). This is a group of local lambanog producers in Barangay Binonoan in the municipality of Infanta. With a strong commitment to protecting their town from devastating storm surges and typhoons, the group has been continuously restoring the once depleting mangrove forest for almost 10 years now. And the result of their action can be clearly seen in the return of abundant wildlife in the area.

This protected mangrove forest is now inhabited by thousands of migratory fruit bats as well as hundreds of different bird species, including herons, egrets, and hawks. There are also occasional sightings of reticulated pythons.

The BIPCO Mangrove ECO Park offers eco-conscious and educational boat tours along its scenic waterways while appreciating a view of the Sierra Madre range. A pitstop at the floating bamboo cottages will give you a close view of the fruit bats hanging upside down from the mangrove branches.

Visitors will also learn more about protecting the mangrove sanctuary in one of their floating classrooms, followed by a sumptuous lunch prepared by the BIPCO ladies. Try the Infanta version of sinantol, ginataang kuhol, and suman.

This nature retreat hopes to become a full-pledged ecotourism site where guests can soon camp overnight. BIPCO is also looking into offering volunteering opportunities where interested visitors can become champions of protecting the mangrove forest.

Participating in the tour directly benefits BIPCO members who work as boat operators, guides, cooks, and storytellers.

Photo by SinoPinas courtesy of the Department of Tourism.

Known to millions of devotees across the country, the Kamay ni Hesus Shrine in Lucban is a spiritual sanctuary for people in need of healing. According to Fr. Joey Faller, a healing priest, people flock to the sacred grounds to repent, seek God’s presence, and pray for relief from illnesses.

Built through donations, the tranquil shrine sits on a five-hectare property dotted with cement statues of Catholic saints, the Virgin Mary, angels, and scenes from the Bible. The main highlight is the 50-foot-tall concrete image of the Risen Christ, and many believers climb more than 300 steps to reach the statue’s base.

It is believed that whoever finishes the steps will be blessed with healing and protection. Fr. Faller stresses, however, that while simple faith has the power to heal, pilgrims should also recognize the importance of celebrating the Eucharist and communing with God through deep prayers.

The shrine is home to serene gardens, a healing church, and several parks for worship. It also has a replica of Noah’s ark built for prayer and meditation, as well as a 21-room retreat house. A small restaurant is also located inside the ark where you can partake of healthy dishes or Lucban delicacies.
