Heritage Churches to Consider for Your Visita Iglesia

The Holy Week is an important occasion for Catholics. In the Philippines, about 83% of the population belong to the Roman Catholic faith.

One of the traditions that Filipinos have been practicing is the Visita Iglesia, wherein the faithful visit at least seven different churches (sometimes even 14) on the evening of Maundy Thursday or on Good Friday, and pray before the Blessed Sacrament.

During the pandemic, Catholics resorted to virtual or online Visita Iglesia. But now that travel restrictions have eased, Filipinos can go back to practicing their Lenten traditions.

Metro Manila has over a hundred churches, some are heritage structures, such as the San Agustin Church, the Manila Cathedral, the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene (Quiapo Church), and the Minor Basilica of St. Lorenzo Ruiz (Binondo Church), to name a few. But if you wish to discover other historical churches and be spiritually and culturally enriched with their own stories, here are some in nearby provinces that you can include in your itinerary.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish (Barasoain Church)
City of Malolos, Bulacan

Barasoain Chrurch in Malolos, Bulacan.
A national shrine, the historic Barasoain Church was built in1885. It served as the session hall of the Malolos Congress in 1898 and the birthplace of the First Philippine Republic, the first in the whole of Asia, in 1899. The Universidad Literaria Cientifica de Filipinas, the first state university established by the Filipinos, was housed in its convent in 1898. The Barasoain Church Historical Landmark boasts of a light and sound museum called Museo ng Republika ng 1899 which is being managed by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP).

Saint John the Baptist Church
Calumpit, Bulacan

St. John the Baptist Church in Calumpit.
Founded in 1572, St. John the Baptist Church is the oldest church in Bulacan. The church had been a witness to the Filipinos’ struggle against Spanish, American, and Japanese rule.

Inside the church is a tunnel that, according to history, was used by priests during the Spanish regime to keep gold, religious statues, and ornate jewelry hidden from the sight of treasure hunters. Likewise, it is in this tunnel where Filipino revolutionaries and Spanish soldiers were buried during the war.

Saint Dominic de Guzman Church (Abucay Church)
Abucay, Bataan

Built in 1588, Abucay Church is considered as the oldest in Bataan and one of the oldest churches in the country. The structure of the church was made of red bricks with adobe stones that withstood the test of time. It was where Tomas Pinpin, the first Filipino printer, printed the earliest books in the Philippines together with Fr. Francisco Blancas de San Jose, his co-author, and teacher.

Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Church (Orani Church)
Orani, Bataan

Enshrined in this church is the wooden statue of Virgen Milagrosa del Rosario del Pueblo de Orani. This iconic pilgrimage church sits right in the middle of Orani.

The original structure built in 1714 was initially made from nipa leaves, molave wood and bamboo. The chapel was eventually reconstructed with stronger materials like adobe and stone. It was damaged by an earthquake in 1852 and razed by fire in 1938.

The Orani Church served as witness to many historical events including the Philippine Revolution and the Japanese occupation during the World War II.

On September 09, 2019, Pope Francis of the Vatican granted this church the title of Minor Basilica.

San Guillermo Parish Church
Bacolor, Pampanga

San Guillermo Church in Bacolor, Pampanga. Photo courtesy of Department of Tourism.

The church serves not only as a reminder of the tragic Mt. Pinatubo eruption, but also as a testament of Bacolorenos’ strong faith and resilience. The church was constructed by the Augustinian Friars in 1576, with rich decoration that depicts the advanced stage of Baroque and Rococo.

On September 3, 1995, lahar mudflow from the slopes of Mount Pinatubo which erupted on June 15, 1991, covered the town and buried the San Guillermo Church in half. The church, whose remaining features were preserved and maintained, is still being used as a place of worship.

Saint James the Apostle Parish Church (Betis Church)
Betis, Guagua, Pampanga

The interiors of the Saint James the Apostle Parish Church in Betis, Guagua, Pampanga. Photo courtesy of Department of Tourism.

It is dubbed as the “Sistine Chapel of the Philippines” because of its interiors, particularly the intricate paintings on the church’s walls and ceiling that are comparable to the frescos of Vatican’s Sistine Chapel. These paintings are attributed to several local artists, including Macario Ligon, Victor Ramos, and Simon Flores. Through its intricately carved wooden main door, wooden flooring, and some wooden statues, the church pays homage to the woodcarving heritage of the province, with Betis being the center of this craft and industry.

The National Museum and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) declared the Baroque-inspired Betis Church a National Cultural Treasure in 2001.

Our Lady of the Assumption Parish Church (Maragondon Church)
Maragondon, Cavite

Maragondon Church in Cavite.
The first structure was built by the Jesuits when the parish was established under the patronage of Our Lady of The Assumption in 1618. During the Spanish-Dutch War, the church was destroyed for fear of becoming a Dutch fort. After the war, the church was rebuilt using wood, then was renovated to stone.

This church is the only heritage structure in the municipality of Maragondon and was declared by the National Museum as a National Cultural Treasure.

Church of St. Mary Magdalene (Kawit Church)
Kawit, Cavite

Kawit Church in Cavite.
This is the parish church of the Municipality of Kawit in the Province of Cavite. First built made of wood in 1638, it is considered one of the oldest churches in the Philippines. The construction of the current church started in 1737 and was restored in 1990. Located few meters away from the mansion of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, this is the church where the president of the First Philippine Republic was baptized.

Our Lady of Light Parish (Cainta Church)
Cainta, Rizal

The original stone structure was built in 1707. From the time of its erection as a parish, it belonged to the Archdiocese of Manila. It was placed under the Diocese of Antipolo in 1983. The church suffered damages due to an earthquake in 1853. When the church was burned downed during the Filipino-American War in 1899, it took more than 60 years before restoration efforts started. The facade was kept untouched.

Cainta Church was declared a historical site by the NHCP for its significant role during the Filipino-American War.

San Idelfonso de Toledo Parish (Tanay Church)
Tanay, Rizal

The first parish was actually established in 1606. From then, it had its own history of destruction and reconstruction. The present church was completed in 1783. Retablos with several images—particularly of Our Lady of Anguish, the Immaculate Conception, Saint Joseph, Saint Peter of Alcantara, the Baptism of Jesus Christ, and Saint Ildephonsus of Toledo—adorn the altar. Carvings of the 14 Stations of the Cross inside the church are masterpieces believed to be created by native artists of the town.

The parish houses the relic of a piece of a bone of Saint Ildephonsus of Toledo. It was declared by the NCCA as a National Cultural Treasure.

Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Sebastian (Lipa Cathedral)
Lipa, Batangas

More commonly known as the Lipa Cathedral, this renaissance church, which was established in the 1700s, serves as the seat of the Archdiocese of Lipa. The structure features stained glass windows, a painted ceiling with a domed center, and a grand altar lit by round glass panes in front.

The original structure was made of light materials and was located on the shore of Taal Lake. It was destroyed when Taal Volcano erupted in 1754. Reconstruction efforts for the transplanted church started in 1779 and was completed sometime between 1865 to 1894. After World War II, the cathedral suffered massive damages and underwent intensive renovation afterwards.

Basilica of Saint Martin of Tours (Taal Basilica)

This magnificent landmark sits atop a hill right at the center of the town. It is named after the patron saint of Taal, Saint Martin of Tours. The dominant religious structure measures 96 meters in length and 45 meters in width.

The Basilica’s size and Baroque façade is awe-inspiring. Its extraordinary structure is even more captivating with the addition of dome ceilings hand painted with intricate detail. Perhaps the most outstanding element is the illuminating altar wall made with shining sterling silver and gold, symbolizing the sacred liberation of the tabernacle.

When it comes to traveling for good food, Pampanga is the go-to province for adventurous gourmands. Pampanguenos are proud of their rich culinary heritage, with delicious dishes that are cooked slowly until they burst with flavor.

Pampanga is also known as a green destination, with natural attractions that range from Mt. Arayat to the wetlands of Candaba. History buffs will likewise enjoy a trip to the centuries-old churches and interacting with the indigenous Aeta.

There are also more contemporary attractions, with economic activity in the area spurred by the development of New Clark City. There, a world-class international airport awaits to welcome local and foreign visitors.

Here are some of the sights, sounds, and tastes that you can experience on a trip to this exciting province.

Sasmuan Coastal Wetlands Area

Birdwatchers and environmentalists can have a field day at the Sasmuan Coastal Wetlands. The mudflats, mangroves, and riverine habitats serve as pitstops for migratory birds on their path through the East Asian-Australasian Flyway.

Around 80,000 migratory birds have been spotted at the wetlands and 63 species of birds inhabit the area, including endangered species such as the Spotted Greenshank, Black-faced Spoonbill, and Far Eastern Curlew.

The site also hosts mangrove zones that provide shelter for juvenile species of fish, molluscs, and other marine and estuarine species. Visitors can book boat rides and go fishing at the wetlands.

Betis Church

The town of Betis is known for their artisans who produce intricate wood carvings. Their handiwork is on full display at the Betis Church, with its carved wooden doors serving as “portals to paradise” to the striking Baroque church.

Its interiors are a feast for the eyes; with paintings and statues of saints and scenes from the Bible. Akin to the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, there is also a ceiling mural created by Simon Flores.

The church was originally built around 1660 out of wood and stucco, with improvements made through the years to make it sturdier. Its bell tower has been around since the 18th century. Outside, you can still find the artesian well dug by Fr. Manuel Camanes in the 19th Century to provide potable water for Betis and other nearby towns.

Bacolor Church

Bacolor is one of the oldest towns in the Philippines. Its church was first built in 1576 by Augustinian friars . An earthquake destroyed the church in 1880, and it was rebuilt in 1886-87, serving the town for more than a century before being partially submerged in lahar after the 1991 Pinatubo eruption.

Fortunately, the altars and statues were saved from lahar along with its colonial-era bells. Although half-submerged, the church stands as a place of worship and symbol of the community’s unwavering faith and resilience in the face of calamities.

Everybody’s Café

This dining spot is named as such, because it was a “neutral ground” during Liberation Time. Filipinos, Japanese, and Americans can drop by to enjoy their simple fare of Pancit Luglug or Mami.

They are also among the first Kapampangan restaurants to offer tsokolate de batirol handmade from cocoa beans and peanuts, and they have tocino and longganisa as dining and take-home treats. Third generation owner Poch Jorolan maintains the quality of the dishes they have served through the years with the same dedication to honest-to-goodness Kapampangan flair.

New Clark City (include the new Clark International Airport)

A former American military base, the sprawling development has been transformed into a vibrant metropolis in Central Luzon. It has commercial areas, stadiums, and an international airport that serves as a gateway to the North.

The airport is a marvel in itself, with modern architecture that is inspired by the slopes of Mt. Arayat and the Filipino Christmas lantern. It is designed to offer fast, safe, and efficient air travel services such as contactless self-check-in and bag drop, advanced docking guidance system, and even contactless ordering for pre-flight dining.

My Lola Nor’s Meryendahan

Chef Elsa Yabut established My Lola Nor’s Meryendahan after being inspired in the kitchen by her mother, fondly known as Lola Nor.

1. Cycling around Intramuros on a Bamboo Bike

Situated right in the heart of Manila, Intramuros is a popular day trip destination for history buffs and tourists who want to get to know the Philippine capital. And here’s an exciting way to do it: ride a bamboo bike. Bambike Ecotours offers a chance to explore the walled city’s old-town charm and its fascinating pieces of Philippine history in an eco-friendly way. These handmade bamboo bikes come in many options for a safe and comfortable ride, with Bambassadors acting as guides while touring the historic fortress city.

2. Zooming through Banaue’s Winding Roads on a Wooden Bike

If your next trip takes you to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras, you can fully immerse yourself in the region’s culture and explore its majestic sites through the local mode of transportation. Up in the mountains of Banaue, tourists can try out hand-carved wooden scooters that can reach up to speeds of 50 kilometers an hour. These bikes are a testament to the Ifugao’s wood carving skills and ingenuity, as they are made with scraps of wood and pieces from old rubber tires. This is an adrenaline-fueled way to enjoy a picturesque view of the centuries-old Banaue Rice Terraces, which their ancestors carved by hand on the mountainsides.

A person participating in a game using only Bamboo Stilts.
3. Test Your Balance on Bamboo Stilts in Cebu

Cebu is a scenic vacation destination that offers a plethora of fun things to do, from trips to historical monuments, island getaways and mountain retreats. It’s also the birthplace of Kadang-Kadang (Karang), an old Filipino game that involves walking—or rather, running—on bamboo stilts. This unique and thrilling activity was recognized as a traditional team sport under the Laro ng Lahi in 1969, but it is considered a childhood game through generations. Kadang-Kadang is played by locals in communities all across the island, and tourists can try out their skills on balance and speed by hopping on a pair of stilts and participating in a team race that runs (or wobbles) for 100 meters. It also has the added benefit of letting you see the beautiful city from a slightly higher point of view.

Intrepid adventurers can get off the beaten path and explore the rugged terrains of Pampanga, once flowing with lahar from Mt. Pinatubo. Photo courtesy of the Department of Tourism.

4. Go Off-Road on a Lahar Adventure in Pampanga

Pampanga offers more than just a delectable taste of Philippine cuisine. This not-so-hidden gem also has one-of-a-kind outdoor activities that are must-tries for intrepid travelers. You can, for instance, go on an off-road tour of the streams and sandy terrain of the province’s lahar trails. Locals have ingeniously and admiringly taken these remnants of the devastating Mount Pinatubo eruption of 1991 and turned it into a destination for extreme sports enthusiasts. There are a number of travel operators that offer guided tours on 4×4 ATVs or motorcycles through this unique landscape. Visitors can pre-book via call or through their websites.

A tourist enjoys a traditional Kawa bath in Rizal.
5. Relax in a Kawa bath in Antique

The Kawa or giant cauldron is typically used for cooking fiesta fare in the Philippines, but in Antique, it provides a rustic and relaxing experience. The mountainside resorts welcome visitors after a trek in the woods of Tibiao in Antique with a refreshing hot bath in a kawa, with water heated over a wood fire and scented with aromatic herbs and flowers. Those who want to experience another kind of therapy can visit the Tibiao Fish Spa, where guests can dip their feet in a pond for fish to nibble on and exfoliate.

Direct flights from Clark International Airport in Pampanga to Antique Airport in San Jose de Buenavista are the fastest way to travel to Antique and enjoy this one-of-a-kind bathing experience. If you’re coming from Manila, you can also take a flight from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport to either the Iloilo International Airport, Kalibo International Airport, or Caticlan Airport, all of which are a two- to three-hour bus ride away from Antique.

The rare Philippine Eagle can be found in any of the conservation sites in Davao.
6. Visit the Philippine Eagle in Davao

The Philippine Eagle is regarded as the Philippines National Bird. It is the largest of the extant eagles in the world in terms of length and wing surface, and it is now considered critically endangered. This is why it is protected in sanctuaries such as the Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary in Davao. Mount Hamiguitan is a UNESCO Protected Highland Nature Reserve and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to a diverse range of plant and animal species. A somewhat challenging trek is rewarded by a treasure trove of biodiverse sightings, including a chance to watch for the majestic Philippine Eagle in flight. Those who would rather study the area’s biodiversity indoors can visit the natural science museum that can be found on the premises. For a quick glimpse of the eagles, guests may also opt to visit Philippine Eagle Center, a private sector-managed rainforest in Davao City that shelters and breeds Philippine Eagles in captivity.

Tour stops include weaving villages and museums, with opportunities to go souvenir shopping for these handmade works of art sewn into stunning articles of clothing or incorporated into decorative pieces for the home.

This circuit traces the Philippine food roots through a combination of organic farm tours and traditional meals that use the freshly harvested produce. The tour runs through the Baguio-La Trinidad-Itogon-Sablan-Tuba-Tublay (BLISTT) area with two farm tourism destinations, namely the Benguet Agro-Eco Farm in Sablan and the UM-A Farm in Tuba. Among the activities are pick-and-pay and the opportunity to partake in a traditional community celebration hosted by the farmers held around a warm bonfire amid fresh mountain air.

The Tourism Department, which has been awarded a SafeTravels Stamp by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) in recognition of its adoption of “health and hygiene global standardized protocols” that will ensure safe travel during the COVID-19 pandemic, conducts thorough inspection and assessment to ensure that only those who are accredited are allowed to open and receive guests.

To ensure safe access to these unique experiences, the Tourism Department enhances its health and hygiene protocols, with tourism workers undergoing constant training and tourism establishments implementing standardized safeguards in their premises to protect their guests and employees.

Travel to the Province of Aurora, a surfer’s haven with surfing sites that have gigantic waves of up to 2.7 meters high. An interesting spot is the Diguisit Rock Formation that was formed by the pounding waves. It is located along the semi-white beach of Diguisit and just lying beside the famous Cobra Reef—an ultimate surfing location in Baler.

Relax and unwind in the beautiful sand beaches of Zambales and Bataan. Take a trip back to the Old Manila at Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar. Situated in Bagac, Bataan, the resort showcases the best of Filipino heritage and culture thru Jose Acuzar’s collection of restored Spanish-Filipino houses. Each casa serves as a bridge between the rich history of the Spanish colonial era and the contemporary luxury and comfort of a modern hotel.

For adventure lovers, the Mt. Pinatubo journey is a must-experience. It includes one and a half hours of 4×4 jeepney ride and an hour trek, passing along the stretches of sand and almost Alpine, white-gray-brown mountain formations. The highlight of the tour is the crater lake whose color changes from blue green to deep blue depending on the season.

Of course, a trip to the region known as the “Rice Granary of the Philippines” would not be complete without discovering its culinary treasures. Savor the heritage dishes that speak about the region’s culture as well as fusion cuisine from some of the best-known chefs in the world. But don’t forget to try Pampanga’s most iconic dish, pork sisig, which was even dubbed as “the greatest pork dish on Earth” in an article on The New York Times.

The region is continuously exploring and developing its food tourism offerings. The DOT Central Luzon has discovered more than a hundred heirloom dishes each in the provinces of Pampanga and Bulacan through its food mapping that will serve as their guide in further developing the region’s culinary tourism.

New Terminal of Clark Int’l Airport

Central Luzon is accessible by land, air, and sea.

Whether you are coming from the north or south of Luzon, the region is accessible by land through major expressways such as the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX), Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEX), and Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX). Foreign tourists coming in from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) are just an hour and a half away from the region through these expressways.

Meanwhile, Subic Bay Port is one of the major port of entries of the biggest cruise ships in the world.

The terminal also promotes inclusivity with all-gender restrooms, nursing stations, and prayer rooms.

Aside from these services, the new terminal is a sight to behold and may even be a tourist attraction in itself featuring modern Filipino architecture inspired by the slopes of Mt. Arayat and the Filipino Christmas lantern.

In fact, the new terminal is one of the top six finalists in the 2021 World Selection of the prestigious Prix Versailles Architecture and Design Awards under the Airport Category. Finalists of the Prix are chosen for their innovative qualities, creativity, and design connection to culture and heritage.

As countries gradually ease global travel restrictions, the Philippines ramps up its tourism recovery efforts, bringing it one step closer to welcoming international travelers again.

The island nation’s lead tourism agency is taking this opportunity to innovate further and develop its destinations, ensuring safe, more fun, and sustainable tourism for both local and foreign visitors. The Philippines recently unveiled its ‘More Fun Awaits’ campaign highlighting new tourism products and packages to explore, each with its own distinct set of adventures.

Plan your trip

With new and improved local destinations equipped with comprehensive safety protocols and procedures, the Philippines is more than ready to provide a safe and pleasant experience for visitors. Travelers may enjoy a range of adventures from north to south, which are now more accessible thanks to new and upgraded infrastructure such as regional airports and roads that connect tourists to the country’s gorgeous islands and their unique experiences.

Travelers may select from a range of destinations in the Philippines with various activities and tourism circuits to enjoy. The beautiful beaches lead to an underwater paradise, teeming with colors from diverse marine life. On land, the mountain ranges beckon to explorers with lush forests and trails that lead to breathtaking waterfalls and rapids. All of these can be experienced with a hearty serving of local cuisines from hosts, home cooks, and chefs, who will be the first to ask the quintessential Filipino greeting, “Have you eaten?”

Get ready to cross these places off your vacation bucket list on your next trip to this tropical paradise:

Reconnect with nature: The Philippines has a diverse range of ecological assets. The Turtle Project in La Union, the Barobaybay Mangrove Ecopark and Marine Conservation in Northern Samar and bird watching tour in Ilocos Norte all have indigenous flora and fauna on exhibit. The scenic mountain environment of Baguio encourages visitors to wander around its public parks or harvest strawberries in neighboring La Trinidad.

Discover history and culture: The Philippines is a nation steeped in culture and history. And there are tourism sites that connect visitors to its heritage. Cebu City, the country’s oldest city, is home to many artifacts from its illustrious past, including the 500-year-old statue of the Sto. Nino de Cebu, which was given as a baptismal gift to the local chief’s wife by the first Spanish explorers headed by Portuguese Ferdinand Magellan.

Being an archipelagic state, the Philippines has direct and easy access to seafood. Tropical fruits are also abundant all year due to the number of countryside farms. Eco and agro excursions are offered to take visitors to the source of food production, from mangroves and fishing villages on the islands to farms that cultivate climate-adapted local products.

One does not have to travel far to enjoy a taste of the Philippines’ culinary masterpieces. Local chefs expertly represent a wide range of regional cuisines at many of Manila’s exquisite restaurants, transforming the city into a global gastronomic paradise. On the other hand, culinary excursions in Bohol are ideal for tourists who want to sample traditional Filipino farm-to-table cuisine. It includes a trip to a bee farm, strawberry field, mushroom house, and a floating lunch buffet on a Loboc Riverboat ride where guests are encouraged to eat Filipino-style with their hands.

Ready for the world

As travel resumes in the new normal, the Philippines’ Department of Tourism (DOT) is preparing to welcome visitors once again, revealing its plans through the #MoreFunAwaits campaign.

Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat says, “We want to show our preparations for travelers, including newly-developed circuits with new exciting activities, destinations, and tourist attractions that have been developed in our regions. Through this campaign, we are also showing that the safety and well-being of tourists are our priority. Our tourism workers are well trained in enhanced health and hygiene protocols, and tourism establishments have also implemented safeguards in their premises to protect their guests and employees.”

The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) has recognized the DOT with a SafeTravels Stamp for its implementation of “global standardized health and hygiene standards” that will guarantee safe travel during the COVID-19 pandemic. SafeTravels is the council’s seal of approval certifying compliance with its global health standards to allow for safe travels.

Hotels, airlines, restaurants, tour operators, attractions, transportation, and airports will be able to use the stamp as proof that they conform to the WTTC’s health and safety standards. The WTTC is an international association that represents leaders in the worldwide travel and tourism sector.

As a result, the DOT has stepped up accreditation, conducting comprehensive inspections and assessments to guarantee that only businesses certified by the DOT are permitted to operate, and welcome visitors provided they conform to globally recognized health, safety, and hygiene standards.

The Philippine government’s Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) is continuously upgrading its procedures to ensure the safety of Filipinos and foreign visitors traveling to the country.

The Clark International Airport in Pampanga

In Pampanga, the new terminal in Clark International Airport was also recently opened. Inspired by the slopes of Mt. Arayat and the Filipino Christmas lantern, the new terminal provides fast, safe, and efficient air travel services such as contactless self-check-in and bag drop, advanced docking guidance system, and even contactless ordering for pre-flight dining. As the “gateway to the North,” it will help boost tourism recovery by expanding connectivity to various local destinations.
