The Philippines is home to lovely beaches and picturesque mountain vistas but the city life is another attraction the travelers can enjoy. The cities of the Philippines offer fun and unique activities that can be toured in a single day, with a cosmopolitan vibe that is complemented perfectly by the warmth of Filipino hospitality.

With more activities and more access to adventures in the different cities in the country, there are definitely more reasons to visit the Philippines. Here are some cities to visit for your next urban explorations.

Vibrant Manila

The capital city of the Philippines is alive with sights and sounds of urban life at its busiest. It is also a contrast of the old and the new, with a mix of skyscrapers and heritage houses, and cars share the road with colorful jeepneys and horse-drawn calesas.

One tourist stop should be the Walled City of Intramuros, built by the Spanish colonizers 500 years ago. Its stone ramparts are still intact, along with the other defenses such as its moats and cannons that protected the fort from both natural disasters and invaders. Visit the Casa Manila Museum to get a feel of life during the Spanish era and take a walking tour to the centuries-old churches Manila Cathedral and San Agustin Church to appreciate their architecture. Fort Santiago holds historic significance as the prison where the Philippine National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal was held before his execution in Bagumbayan.

While the term Bahay na Bato or house made of stone is used in many places of the Philippines to denote the homes of the upper class during the Spanish times. The Bahay na Bato in the Ilocos region has a distinct architectural style, using bricks up to the second levels of the house. One such example is the Juan Luna Shrine in Badoc, the ancestral home of the Spoliarium painter and his brother, Antonio who is known for his exploits during the Philippine- American War.

For attractions that bring travelers closer to nature, there’s the Kapurpurawan Rock Formation that juts out magnificently against the sky with limestone that was carved through time by wind and waves. This wind is harnessed by the turbines at the Bangui Wind Farm, where a line of windmills pose an impressive sight as well as supply power to the province. The Paoay Sand Dunes are perfect for those looking for an adrenaline rush, with activities such as sandboarding and thrilling 4×4 rides.

Another impressive site is the Poro Point Lighthouse in La Union, the original structure, no longer in use, was lit by a kerosene lamp. A modern lighthouse that uses solar energy now stands guard near a cliff that overlooks a beautiful coastline.

The Department of Tourism is embarking on strengthened efforts towards sustainability by enhancing existing destinations and developing new circuits that highlight sustainable management practices and involve local communities.

As tourism has a multiplier effect—creating not only jobs but also livelihood opportunities through offering of goods and services—sustainability ensures the preservation of destinations, thriving of culture and traditions, and inclusive growth. Moreover, as sustainability measures often involve the community, the locals themselves become part of the meaningful experience of their hometown’s visitors.

Here are the top sustainable tourism destinations for your next adventures in the Philippines and the communities that you will encounter on an unforgettable journey.

The eco-friendly locals of Mt. Hamiguitan and Mt. Apo in Davao

The Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary in Davao Oriental is Mindanao’s first and only UNESCO World Heritage Site, with attractions such as a pygmy forest where trees are stunted to only about 4.5 feet in height. There are 1,974 endemic plant and animal species that have been identified so far, including carnivorous pitcher plants, the iconic Philippine Eagle, Philippine cockatoo, and golden crowned flying foxes. The locals are engaged not only in tourism but also in sustainable livelihood programs. One of these is beekeeping using the native stingless bee species called ‘kiyot’. This also helps with pollinating and protecting Mt. Hamiguitan’s vegetation.

The Mount Apo Natural Park is home to 272 bird species, 111 of which are endemic, including the Philippine Eagle which is the largest in the world. The mountain is also inhabited by several indigenous groups: the Manobos, Bagobos, and Klata who consider it as a sacred mountain. They perfectly demonstrate how to coexist in harmony with the environment. Trek porters are equipped by the local tourism offices to share their knowledge of the mountain and its conservation.

The artisans of Ilocos, Panay Island, Eastern Visayas, and Central Mindanao

The women of Ilocos, particularly in the towns of Paoay, Vigan, Pinili, down to the towns of Santiago in Ilocos Sur and Bangar in La Union have been weaving from their homes since pre-Hispanic times. Their hand-loomed Inabel fabric, made from cotton blends is made into blankets, table covers, and even apparel, such as bags, shoes, and face masks for the new normal, with traditional designs that have been passed down through generations.

Panay Island also has a proud tradition of weaving, with several weaving communities across the island. In Aklan, they dexterously weave the fibers of the piña or Red Bisaya pineapple plant into delicate-looking cloth made into home decor and even formal apparel. Aklanon weavers are known for their piña and silk cloth creations that are embroidered with floral designs while the weavers of Iloilo and Antique are known for employing the suk-suk or inlaid weft technique in hablon and patadyong cloth.

The surfing communities of La Union, Baler, Siargao, Surigao del Sur and Eastern Samar

The surfing hotspots of the Philippines have produced not only a burgeoning tourism industry but also world-class local surfers. Those living in the islands have picked up the sport and the waters of La Union, Baler, Siargao, Surigao del Sur and Eastern Samar have increasingly seen more locals on their boards. These friendly Filipino surfers are the embodiment of the laidback local surfing lifestyle and are also staunch advocates of caring for their marine environment.

The culinarians of Iloilo City, Bacolod, Zamboanga City, and Davao City

Visiting the different regions of the Philippines is a taste trip, with each province contributing richly to the food map of the country, with recipes that make use of what is easily available in their locality. A cultural awareness of these dishes and the resulting food tourism ensures that not only the recipes are handed down to the next generation but heirloom produce will continue being planted by the local farmers.

Iloilo city is considered as one of the food capitals of the Philippines, with flavorful delicacies such as bowls of La Paz Batchoy noodles and Molo Soup. Negros Occidental is called the Sugar Bowl of the Philippines for its fields of sweet sugarcane. Among their preferred dishes for guests especially those visiting its capital city, Bacolod are Inasal (chicken grilled over hot coals), Piaya (unleavened flatbread filled with muscovado sugar), and Kansi or beef shank with bone marrow cooked in broth flavored with a local souring agent called Batwan.

Seafood abounds in Zamboanga, and their must-try dishes include ingredients such as a crustacean locally called Curacha, Imbao or mangrove clams, snails called Kulo, and Lato — a seaweed that resembles small green grapes, or commonly known as green caviar. Davao is known for its fruits, ranging from pineapples, bananas, sweet pomelos, and the infamous durian. For a memorable meal, try the specialties that make use of fresh seafood such as Kinilaw, the local version of ceviche, and Sinugba or freshly-grilled seafood.

The islands of the Philippines beckon with beautiful beaches that are perfect for a tropical getaway. The country has destinations that have been highly-recommended by various travel publications, such as Travel + Leisure Magazine and Condé Nast, as the best in the world because of their fine sand, clear waters, and relaxing vibe. These are perfectly complemented by the warmth of Filipino hospitality that is also truly world-class.

Plan your next vacay at these bucket-list beaches!

White Beach, Boracay

Its fine white sand and clear waters have made the White Beach of Boracay one of the most popular destinations in the Philippines. It was first awarded as the 2012 Best Island in the World by Travel + Leisure Magazine, followed by making it to the top of the “Best Islands in the World” list published by Condé Nast Traveler. In 2016, Boracay headed the Condé Nast Traveler list of “Top 10 destinations to watch” and was ranked 12th in TripAdvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Awards 2021 for the top 25 beaches in the continent after undergoing rehabilitation in 2018.

Boracay is a fun and hassle-free destination as it offers a range of traveler-friendly accommodations from resorts with luxe amenities to budget-friendly hotel rooms. There are also many activities to choose from, such as watching the gorgeous sunrise on a quiet morning, engaging in water sports, and enjoying the cuisine from the restaurants located along the beachfront.

Siargao Island, Surigao

Epic waves and a laid-back lifestyle have drawn surfers to the paradise that is Siargao. Surf tourism started on this island in the 1980s and it has steadily grown with the help of social media.

While it has become a booming tourist attraction, with Conde Nast readers voting it as The Best Island in the World in 2019 and its subsequent inclusion in Time Magazine’s list of “Greatest Places” in 2021, the tiny haven still remains quaint and charming.

Part of the attraction is its remoteness that has allowed travelers to enjoy more of its natural beauty in the form of white sand islets, breathtaking tide pools, and lush mangrove forests. It is also the local vibe from fellow surf enthusiasts and friendly residents in the nearby community that allow for a memorable and relaxing vacay.

Saud Beach, Ilocos Norte

The Northern part of the Philippines is known for its beautiful mountain ranges, but there are also breathtaking beaches that sparkle like hidden gems. It takes a long drive to reach Saud Beach in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte but travelers will be rewarded with an award-winning destination, named as one of the 25 Most Beautiful Beaches in the World by Travel + Leisure Magazine this 2021.

It has been called the Boracay of the North, comparing it to one of the country’s top beach destinations for its white sand and clear water, but owing to its less accessible location, it is quieter and perfect for those who seek beach haven bliss.

Aside from beach bumming, travelers can go on sightseeing trips to the awe-inspiring Kapurpurawan Rock Formations that make you feel like you are on another planet, or take a road trip for a photo op at the Bangui Windmills, which supplies energy to the local communities.

Calaguas Islands, Camarines Norte

Calaguas Islands’ Mahabang Buhangin was listed as one of the country’s top 10 must-see sights in an online survey initiated by Isla Lipana & Co., a multinational consultancy and a member of the London-based PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), and this has drawn tourist interest to the area.

The ‘concealed white beach of Bicol’ is a tropical paradise that offers romantic strolls along the shores of Mahabang Buhangin, water sports like kayaking and snorkeling at Pinanakpan Island’s coral reef and trekking to its viewpoint that offers a breathtaking vista of Balagbag Island and Sitio Tinago.

It is one of the destinations that the Department of Tourism is further developing through partnering with the local government to offer tour packages and accommodations that will cater to different types of travelers.

The Philippines Department of Tourism celebrates the history and culture of the country by developing new circuits among its regions.

In 2021, the Philippines celebrated its pivotal role in the Quincentennial commemoration of the first circumnavigation of the world by navigator and explorer Ferdinand Magellan. He arrived in 1521 and discovered a thriving civilization. Many of these ancient cultural traditions are still in practice today together with the influences that have been introduced by other cultures. This has made the Philippines an interesting destination where various cultures from different eras come together.

With the country’s rich heritage and culture, sites of interest abound all over the country. Many of these historic places can even be visited conveniently in one city. Here are some places to visit on your visit to the Philippines:

Ilocos

Up North, the influences of the Spanish era abound, from the Baroque churches such as the San Agustin Church in Paoay, Ilocos Norte which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the 17th century, it was also named as a National Cultural Treasure in 1973. The Museo Ilocos Norte gives visitors a glimpse of life in the region’s diverse cultures with displays of Ilocano, Igorot and Itneg traditional clothing, household utensils, ceremonial objects, and more. The museum is housed in an old tabacalera, or cigar factory, with tobacco being one of the main agricultural industries of Ilocos.

Vigan is another charming city to visit for a cultural trip. The Bantay Church in Ilocos Sur is a must-see with its bell tower structure that also served as a lookout point against pirates still standing to this day. The whole street of Calle Crisologo is another UNESCO World Heritage Site in the North, with its old-world charm of cobblestone streets and heritage structures transporting tourists back in time. Vigan is also where one can watch the traditional art of pottery making at the Pagburnayan, while travelers can watch locals, in Brgy. Camangaan still in Vigan, weave the local cotton fabric called Inabel on their handlooms.

Cebu

One can find remnants from Ferdinand Magellan’s landing in the Philippines at Cebu, with a monument called Magellan’s to commemorate the first baptism held in Philippine shores, and the Sto. Nino Basilica across the street houses the image of the Child Jesus that was gifted by Magellan to Hara Humamay and Rajah Humabon of Cebu when she was baptized into Christianity. One can also visit the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral to view its Sino influences such as carved reliefs of phoenixes and the two dogs standing guard at the entrance.

Plaza Hamabar is named after Rajah Humabon. Here, one can find a statue of the Cebuano Chieftain as he was described by Magellan’s chronicler Antonio Pigafetta. The Cebu Heritage Monument is a tableau of concrete, bronze, brass, and steel showing events and structures related to the history of Cebu. The Colon Obelisk can be found on Colon Street, which is said to be the oldest street in the Philippines and, as it is now still an important avenue for commerce. An imposing structure of stone, Fort San Pedro was built as a fortress against Muslim raiders by the first Spanish Governor-General Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, and it is the oldest triangular bastion fort in the country.

For those looking to experience Cebuano arts and crafts, there are tours to the Alegre Guitar Factory and the furniture makers such as the atelier of Kenneth Cobonpue and the workshop of Dedon furniture. Other cultural stops are the Casa Gorodo Museum which is a National Historical Landmark with its glimpse into the way of life of a Chinese-Filipino family in the Parian District, 1730 Jesuit Museum or Parian Museum which is the old retreat house of the Jesuit Order in Cebu, Museo Sugbo, the former Cárcel de Cebú, which houses pre-colonial artifacts and Chinese wares, and the Carmen Copper Museum and Heritage Center which presents the history of the copper mining industry in the country.

Greater Manila Area

Corregidor Island served as a fortress of defense during the Spanish period because of its strategic location near Manila. During World War 2, it was used as a garrison against the Japanese forces by Filipino and American soldiers. Its ruins can be visited today as a memorial to those who lost their lives on the battlefield.

The Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo Shrine in Cavite was the home of the first Philippine president. It was here that the Filipino flag was formally unfurled for the first time and where the National Anthem was also played as a sign of independence from Spanish rule. In the neighboring Cavite town of Maragondon, stands the Roderico Reyes Ancestral House, better known as the Bonifacio Trial House where the leader of the Katipunan revolution Andres Bonifacio was tried and found guilty of treason by the government established by Gen. Aguinaldo.

For artful pursuits, one can go to Tagaytay and visit the Museo Orlina of modern glass sculptor Ramon Orlina and the Puzzle Mansion of enthusiast Georgina Gil-Lacuna who holds the Guinness World Record of having the most number of completed jigsaw puzzles on display. In Angono, which is known as a hometown of artists, one can find the studio home of Carlos “Botong” Francisco, the second National Artist for Visual Arts who specialized in capturing rural folklife. He was also the one who is credited for discovering the country’s oldest form of art, the Angono-Binangonan Petroglyphs which are located in a rock shelter just outside his town.

Manila

Fort Santiago in Intramuros was a Spanish fortress where the Philippine National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal was incarcerated before his execution at Bagumbayan, now Rizal Park. The fort, with its stone ramparts still intact, is now a public park with remnants of history on display in a museum celebrating Rizal’s life. The Baluarte de San Diego is another part of Intramuros that was part of its stone fortifications. Crossways and a staircase lead visitors to where cannons were strategically placed as protection against invaders.

For more historical content, tourists can visit the Casa Manila Museum which is a replica of a typical Spanish colonial mansion furnished with items of Philippine, Chinese and European origins. The National Museum, houses some of the country’s most important works of art from Juan Luna’s Spoliarium which won Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes in 1884 in Madrid to the works of contemporary artists. The San Agustin Church in Intramuros is the oldest church in the Philippines. It exhibits remarkable features such as Baroque altars, wall buttresses and ceiling paintings in the tromp l’oeil style.

Rizal Park in Manila is a popular tourist spot for locals and international travelers for its wide-open spaces and its attractions that include a dancing fountain and a bas relief map of the country. There is also a Monument to mark where Dr. Rizal was buried and a stature in honor of Rajah Lapu-Lapu, the country’s first hero, who defeated Ferdinand Magellan at the Battle of Mactan.

Bacolod is known for its sugar plantations and the heritage houses nearby that illustrate how the hacienderos lived during the Spanish era. Among the houses that one can visit are Balay Negrense which was built in 1898 by Victor Gaston, son of Frenchman Yves Leopold Germain Gaston who is considered the first to popularize sugarcane cultivation on a commercial scale in the region, and The Ruins, which are what’s left of a mansion that Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson built for his wife Maria Braga Lacson after it was razed in a fire.

For a taste of heritage, stop by El Ideal, the city’s oldest bakery for a snack of their baked specialties that include bañadas, kinamunsil, masa podrida, lubid-lubid, biscocho de caña, and biscocho prinsipe.

Eastern Visayas

The region is rich in history and culture. One of the new circuits that have been developed is the Sinugdan Quincentennial Tour which brings travelers on a pilgrimage to seven heritage stone churches: Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church and the St. Isidore the Laborer Chapel, both in Baybay City; the Our Lady of Immaculate Concepcion Church in Hilongos, Leyte; Saint Joseph the Worker Church in Matalom, Leyte; the Our Lady of Assumption Cathedral in Maasin City; the Sto. Niño Church in Malitbog; and the St. John the Baptist Church in San Juan, all in Southern Leyte. The tour also brings tourists to other attractions in the area, such as San Pedro and San Pablo Islands in Hinunangan or Molopolo – Sta. Cruz Fish and Bird Sanctuary in Macrohon before heading to Limasawa Island where the historic first Catholic Mass in Asia was held on March 30, 1521.

Gen. Douglas MacArthur famously promised Filipinos, “I shall return”, upon retracting American troops in World War II. He returned on October 20, 1944, and his landing on the shores of Palo, Leyte has been marked with a bronze monument.

Note: The Leyte Gulf Landing headed by Gen. MacArthur was the turning point of the war in the Pacific theatre, his return/landing on October 20, 1944, together with former Presidents Sergio Osmeña and Carlos P. Romulo is now marked with a monument.

The Santo Niño Shrine and Heritage Museum which was built by the late President Marcos in his wife Imelda’s hometown in Tacloban is a repository of her priceless art collections and religious relics.

For a nature trip, visitors can head to the Sohoton Caves in Basey, Samar for a river cruise that takes them through lush vegetation before entering a cathedral-like cave with various stalactite and stalagmite formations. A stop at Basey brings tourists to a village of mat-weavers who use leaves that have been dried and dyed before being woven into intricate and colorful patterns.

The island souvenirs of the Philippines are unlike any other in the world. Here one can find souvenirs that showcase the rich and diverse culture of the country. Rattan is one of the indigenous materials that are used for traditional packaging, from shopping bags called bayong and boxes that are used to store items in the home. Banig or woven mats are another Filipino woven product, used for sleeping or as bags and home accents.

Filipino pastimes include playing street games, such as trumpo or wooden tops that children use to battle it out to see whose top spins the longest. Music is another big part of Filipino culture, with instruments like the ukulele or the kubing or jaw harp playing important roles in traditional celebrations.

For a more modern take on the country’s culture, one can try Paradise Mango Rum which uses the sweet flavors of the Philippine mangoes in a potent drink, and the Trese komiks on which the popular Netflix show on Filipino folklore is based.

People are naturally curious and are just itching to explore different cultures around the world. According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), it’s why world heritage sites such as the Banks of the Seine in Paris, the Statue of Liberty in New York, the Acropolis in Athens, and the Great Wall of China attract many tourists from all over the world.

In the Philippines, we have nine properties in the UNESCO World Heritage List of our own. (Four of these properties, however, are grouped under one name, Baroque Churches of the Philippines.)

These sites are “of outstanding universal value” and meet at least one out of 10 selection criteria. They are as follows:

Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras (Cordillera Administrative Region)

Inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1995, the Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras showcase Ifugao industry. It is one of the few places in the country that show no evidence of being influenced by colonial cultures.

UNESCO describes it as a living cultural landscape of unparalleled beauty “epitomizing the absolute blending of the physical, socio-cultural, economic, religious, and political environment.”

The amphitheater-like Batad Cluster is one of the five clusters of the Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The entire landscape itself is quite extensive, and are located in the remote corners of the Cordillera mountain range. But UNESCO only has its most intact and impressive clusters inscribed on its list:

(1) the Nagacadan cluster in the municipality of Kiangan, which appears as two distinct ascending rows of terraces bisected by a river; (2) the Hungduan cluster, which resembles a spider web; (3) the central Mayoyao cluster, where the terraces are woven into traditional farmers’ houses and granaries; (4) the Bangaan cluster that backdrops a typical Ifugao traditional village; and (5) the Batad cluster, which features amphitheater-like semi-circular terraces with a village at its base.

The most popular to tourists are the Bangaan and Batad clusters in Banaue. Traveling to these terraces requires hiking or trekking, and the best months to visit are from June to July, or October to November.

Trip Quest Travel and Tours offers a two day-one Night Banaue Package, which includes a hike to the Batad cluster and Tappiyah Falls. You can also visit the Banaue Rice Terraces view point where you can also buy local souvenirs and delicacies.

Before heading home, you will also visit the Kiangan Shrine, a native Ifugao house-inspired shrine that commemorates the surrender of General Tomoyuki Yamashita to the Filipino-American forces. He was the highest commander of the Japanese Imperial Army in the Philippines.

You will also get to go to the Ifugao Museum, which houses the notable local works from woodcarvings to Ibaloy artifacts.

This 2D1N Banaue Package costs Php8,400/head for a group of five (5) persons. It includes overnight accommodation at Banaue Hotel with breakfast, all applicable fees, a DOT-accredited tour guide, travel insurance, and roundtrip transfers to and from Baguio. Roundtrip transfers to and from Manila can also be requested for an additional charge of Php850/head.

If you wish to include a visit to Sagada and explore its mountain valleys, rice fields, limestone caves, and waterfalls, there is also a 3 Days-2 Nights Banaue-Sagada tour for Php11,000/head for a group of five.
How to get there:

Take a bus from Manila to Banaue, which is an eight to 11-hour ride. You can also take a flight from Manila to Cauayan Airport in Isabela, which takes only a little over an hour. But from this airport, you will need to take a 3.5-hour land journey to Banaue. Transport can also be arranged with your local tour operator.

Paoay Church (Ilocos Norte, Region I)

Among the country’s properties inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List is called the Baroque Churches of the Philippines. A group of four centuries-old churches, their style of building and design was adapted to the physical conditions in the country.

Inscribed in 1993, the UNESCO cites the four churches as outstanding examples of the Philippine interpretation of the Baroque style. They “represent the fusion of European church design and construction with local materials and decorative motifs to form a new church-building tradition.”

One of the properties is the Church of San Agustín in Paoay, Ilocos Norte. More commonly known as Paoay Church, it looms large because of its 24 enormous buttresses on all sides—a feature that makes it earthquake-proof.

Take a trip back in time at Calle Crisologo, which is part of the Historic City of Vigan.
Its facade is a mix of gothic and baroque, a fusion of Spanish, Chinese, and Filipino influences. The niches on top of the pillars and buttresses suggest Javanese influence.

To the right of the church is a three-story belltower made of coral stone. It used to be the Katipuneros’ observation post during the revolt against the Spaniards and by the Filipino guerillas during World War II.

Historic City of Vigan (Ilocos Sur, Region I)

Vigan was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999 for its unique culture and townscape. It is described as “the most intact example in Asia of a planned Spanish colonial town, established in the 16th century.”

Its main architecture is Hispanic but infused with Chinese, Ilocano, and Filipino elements, which is unique to the region. In 2014, Vigan was also selected as one of the New 7 Wonder Cities of the World.

The whole of Vigan was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Site covering 28.88 square kilometers, three major plazas—Plaza Salcedo, Plaza Burgos, and Plaza Trese Martires—and a total of 246 ancestral houses and structures.

Its major attraction is Calle Crisologo, which is lined with cobblestone and preserved ancestral houses of affluent Filipino-Chinese families. Located on the ground floor of these grand houses are shops that offer Vigan’s best products. These include crafts and delicacies like hand-woven abel textiles, and jewelry.

Some of the old houses have also been converted into restaurants and accommodations.

The construction of the church started in 1765. Its thick walls made of bricks and mortar were reinforced with huge buttresses. Beside it is a belfry that was also used as a watchtower in the Spanish colonial period.

Officially known as the Church of the Immaculate Conception of San Agustin, this is also included in UNESCO’s list of Baroque structures. It is situated inside the walled city of Intramuros in Manila.

The church made of adobe stones was completed in 1607. It used to have two bell towers, but the one on its right side collapsed during a strong earthquake and was permanently removed after.

The church was witness to many significant events in history, especially since Intramuros was the seat of political and religious power during colonial times. During the Battle of Manila in 1945, the church remained standing even as other structures in Intramuros were reduced to rubbles.

What sets it apart from the three other Baroque churches is its interior, particularly the intricate retablo or altars and the tromp l’oeil style paintings on the ceiling. The church also houses a museum of Spanish artifacts, statues, church ornaments, and paintings.

The Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park was one of the first properties in the Philippines to be inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993.

Located in the center of the Sulu Sea, it covers a vast area of 96,828 hectares, including two coral atolls, the North and the South. It also has the Jessie Beazley Reef, a smaller coral structure about 20 kilometers north of the atolls. The property is considered part of Cagayancillo, a remote island municipality of Palawan inhabited mainly by fisherfolk.

UNESCO cites it as an “excellent example of pristine reefs with a high diversity of marine life,” with over 360 coral species, 600 species of fish, 11 species of sharks and rays, 13 species of dolphins and whales, and 100 species of birds. The North Islet serves as a nesting site both for birds and the green and hawksbill turtles, which are both endangered.

Tubbataha Reefs is popular with scuba divers, with its Delsan Wreck as a go-to dive site for many. Here, you will have the chance to meet several shark and ray species, such as white tip shark, tiger sharks, whale sharks, hammerheads, manta rays, devil rays, and eagle rays.

Diving here can be quite costly, however, and most sites are only recommended for seasoned or certified advanced open water divers. It is also only accessible to tourists between March and June when diving conditions are best, with clear skies, calm seas, and visibility between 30 and 45 meters.

The only way to reach Tubbataha is through a liveaboard and trips are usually between five and seven days. Liveaboard packages range from Php100,000 up to more Php200,000 per person. There are also other expenses, such as park fees, diving gear and equipment rental, travel and dive insurance, and flights to and from Palawan.

The itinerary includes 3-4 dives per day for Days two to six to explore the various dive sites.

How to get there:

Take a plane from Manila to Puerto Princesa. Dive operators usually transport their guests from the airport to the pier, just minutes away, where their boat awaits.

It takes around 10 hours to get to the Park from Puerto Princesa. Depending on the speed of the vessel, dive boats leave in the afternoon or after dinner to arrive at Tubbataha by first light the next day.

Miagao Church (Iloilo, Region VI)

The last of the four baroque structures on the list is Miagao Church. It is officially known as the Church of Saint Thomas of Villanova.

Following the Baroque-Romanesque style, the church is found in the Municipality of Miagao in Iloilo. It sinks six meters deep into the ground with walls one-and-a-half meters thick and buttresses thrice thicker.

What makes it unique from the three other baroque churches in the UNESCO list is its façade that is almost like a retablo because of its intricate design.

It has two huge unequal bell towers directly attached to the main church. A prominent element inside the church is the gold-plated retablo.

Other attractions in the property include the Hidden Garden, Tinagong Dagat, Twin Falls, and Black Mountain.

At the buffer zone area in San Isidro, there is the Mount Hamiguitan World Heritage Park. This is an interactive facility that showcases the wonders of the property.

It has an interpretation site, a natural science museum, research center and cabin, bird-watching viewdeck, a hanging bridge, a nature trail for leisure hiking, sunset viewdeck, and a cafe.

The Philippine Islands is home to many proud craftsmen and artisans–Filipinos who create world-class products using skills and tools that have been handed down through generations. In harmony with nature and with ingenuity, they use indigenous materials that abound in their communities. These treasures await travelers to the Philippines, as beautiful souvenirs that can be brought home along with memories of a relaxing getaway in this tropical paradise.

The Philippines Department of Tourism partners with the Department of Trade and Industry to support the local handicrafts businesses all over the country. Through this partnership, many local producers have been able to reach a wider customer base. Projects include seminars, trade fairs and expositions, along with souvenir stops at popular destinations. Together with creating travel circuits that are based on attractions in each region, the DOT also highlights artisanal products that can showcase the local talent and culture.

There are many native materials that are transformed into beautiful works of art by Filipino craftsmen. Here are some of the cool souvenirs that travelers can bring home from the Philippines.

Baguio’s woodcrafts

Woodworking in the uplands of the Cordillera Region ranges from utilitarian items used at home or in the fields, to ceremonial items used in community celebrations, and spiritual figures called Bulul that serve as house guardians that are passed on from generation to generation. Baguio’s public market and roadside stalls offer many choices of hand-carved wood items to fit your fancy and your luggage space – such as the infamous ‘barrel man’, or larger statues of warriors and animals such as eagles that can serve as a conversation piece in your home.

The Inabel of Ilocos

The practice of weaving cotton thread into fabric on a wooden loom used to be one of the household duties of many Ilocano women. The hardy Inabel or Abel Iloco, is a soft, simple, pliable fabric with varied unique patterns and designs that can be woven to be big enough for use as blankets, table runners, and even dress material. Some Inabel items that are available at souvenir shops such as the ones in Vigan, Ilocos Sur or even online are tea towels, blankets, shawls, bags, and even made-to-order apparel from young designers who are keen to use this sustainably made and sourced fabric.

Inabel or Abel Iloco.
Vigan’s Pagburnayan Clay Jars

Burnay is the Ilocano word for the brown clay pot used by Filipinos even before the Spanish arrived in the country. These earthen pottery pieces were used by early Filipinos as water containers because they help keep the water cool even on a hot day. They were also important household items as containers for salt and rice, or for vinegar, fermented fish paste, and they were vessels for items that were sold to the Chinese in the days of the sea trade. In Vigan, one can visit a pottery shop and learn how Burnay is made using carabao power to mix the mud, and have your own photo opportunity on the potter’s wheel. You can also purchase these thick and hardy jars to use as decorative pieces or planters at home.

Pagburnayan Clay Jars.
Cebu’s Guitars and Capiz Shells

Guitars that are handmade in Cebu are famous throughout the Philippines because they are durable, affordable, and of high-quality compared to the mass-produced ones in the market. The art of making guitars, which was introduced in the Spanish era, has been passed on through generations of local masters who make these musical instruments by painstakingly shaping the wood into the familiar hourglass shape. These are available at souvenir shops or at family-owned guitar stores, particularly in Lapu-Lapu City, have become local attractions for music lovers of all ages.

The Visayas is also where dainty Capiz shell art is a traditional handicraft industry. The translucent Capiz, which can still be found adorning windows of heritage homes or painted in the stained glass windows of churches, comes from the shell of a mollusk called the Windowpane Oyster. After the meat has been eaten, the shells are gathered to be used in handicrafts. Local artists use the shells to create magnificent décors such as complicated chandeliers, pretty wind chimes, beautiful floor lamps, or smaller stationery items that can be given away to friends and family back home.

Barako Coffee from Batangas

Barako is a Tagalog word that means ‘strong’ and that is a good descriptor for the brew that comes from the coffee beans grown particularly in Batangas and some parts of Cavite. The farmers take pride in their coffee plants, which have been cultivated in their region since the 1800s. Coffee experts describe the taste as woody and smoky with a hint of sweetness from its floral, fruity aroma. Its bold, intense flavor from Liberica beans has been translated into local coffeehouse favorites and even into cakes and pastries. A cup of coffee made from your souvenir bag of ground beans is a great way to perk up on a cold day.

Davao’s Malagos Chocolates

While growing cacao is an agricultural practice in many parts of the Philippines, Davao is hailed as the country’s Chocolate Capital and the entire Davao Region as the Cacao Capital of the Philippines. One of the frontrunners of the industry in the region is the award-winning Malagos Chocolates brand which uses high-quality beans from a sustainable source for a “tree to bar” chocolate journey. Its latest award was for its 100% Premium Unsweetened Chocolate that won four Golds and one Bronze at the 2020 World Drinking Chocolate Competition organized by the International Chocolate Awards.
Manila’s South Sea Pearls Shops

There are many high-end jewelry stores located at the malls selling a sundry of pearls and other gems. But for those who want to have the element of a bargain when they shop for their jewelry and accessories can visit the bazaars of Manila, where one can find an assortment of South Sea Pearls from Palawan and some parts of Mindanao sold at stalls beside cellphone accessories and rubber shoes. There, one can browse through their collections of luminous necklaces and dainty earrings while asking for the “final price” that the vendor can offer.

Davao Oriental’s Virgin Coconut Oil

Touted to have many health benefits, virgin coconut oil is produced from fresh or mature coconuts, without undergoing chemical refining, bleaching or deodorizing. VCO products that are available in the Philippines come in oil and capsule form or even as cosmetics. While coconuts grow abundantly all over the country, Davao Oriental is poised to become a big exporter of coconut products overseas, with 18 Virgin Coconut Oil processing centers set to rise within the year. Modern production at the processing plants such as the one of Oriental Golden Coco Inc., ensure high quality through multiple microfiltration processes for additional purity to result in products with that wonderful fresh coconut aroma and flavor in what is called the “purest and healthiest” form of coconut oil.

Cordillera’s Heirloom Rice

Heirloom rice varieties have been grown in the Cordillera Mountains for centuries, and studies have found that there could be about 500 traditional varieties of rice that are indigenous in the region and are mostly being planted for personal or family consumption through generations. So far, there have been 88 varieties that have been identified and studies have shown these to have higher nutritional content.
The Philippines’ Alcoholic Drinks

Imbibe the spirit of the Philippines through its choice of alcoholic concoctions. A short story by the late Don Alejandro Roces who is a National Artist of the Philippines for Literature, cheekily says, “We Filipinos Are Mild Drinkers”. This is offset by the local distilled drinks such as Don Papa Rum, a premium aged single-island rum from the sugar cane fields at the foot of Mt. Kanglaon in the Visayas. Coconut Wine called Lambanog is another potent brew obtained from the distillation of naturally fermented coconut sap. Modern version of this celebratory drink now has added flavors. Travelers can bring this home to European countries if they are for personal consumption while restrictions in Muslim countries may apply.

Liliw, Laguna’s Native Slippers

The town of Liliw in Laguna is known for its slipper industry, with local artisans crafting the footwear from abaca which grows abundantly in the area. These comfortable and colorful house slippers are perfect for keeping your feet warm while relaxing at home and they make great handcrafted gifts – just make sure that the recipient gives you a coin in return as Philippine superstition says that if you don’t get one, you might get into a quarrel.

Filipino Designer’s Modern Filipiniana

Young Filipino designers are rediscovering local woven fabrics and reimagining them for use as modern apparel in order to support traditional industries and local communities. While the National Dress of Barong Tagalog (long-sleeved embroidered formal shirts) for men and Baro’t Saya (that literally translates to blouse and skirt, made from fine pina cloth) for women are still worn on important occasions, designers such as the ones at Filip + Inna are coming up with stunning garments that make use of handmade woven material, beading, and embroidery that can be worn at the office or even at the beach. Bring home something old, something new with gorgeous designs that will make you stand out in a crowd.

More Treasures to Unbox

The Philippines is a haven for those who want to enjoy local culture through tangible items. Rattan is one of the indigenous materials that are used for traditional packaging, the leaves are dexterously woven into shopping bags called bayong and boxes that are used to store items in the home. Banig, or woven mats are another Filipino woven product, used for sleeping or as bags and home accents, while abaca bags are fashionable and summery all year long. Wooden utensils are utilitarian and decorative items, which can be found both on the dining table or if in their supersized form, hanging from the walls of the dining room. For those who want to try their hand at a little Filipino cooking, local brand Mama Sita offers condiments and sauces to help capture that local palette.

Travel safely!

All these tourist destinations have health and safety protocols in place to protect locals and visitors alike. Everyone is expected to comply by wearing face masks, regularly washing their hands, and practicing physical distancing.
