Our country is steeped in history and culture that is as rich and diverse as our geography. The imposing and often world-recognized landmarks spread across our archipelago are visually-arresting expressions of our colorful history.

But did you know that many of these important destinations offer immersive experiences beyond historical education?

From riding on the highest zipline through cultural landscapes in Mindanao to being in awe of one of the most photographed streets in our country, to appreciating the wide expanse of sea and sky at an observation deck, here are experiences at heritage sites recommended by the Department of Tourism (DOT).

Take a tour of the tombs and columbary of San Agustin Church in Intramuros

Three centuries of Spanish occupation is seen and felt all over our country until today, and many of these hispanic influences are easily visible in Intramuros. The 60-hectare block of land was built and fortified by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, the first Spanish governor-general of the Philippines, in the 16th century.

Many important landmarks have persisted from the time of The Walled City’s construction, not the least of which is the 400-year-old San Agustin Church. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the structure is one of the oldest Catholic churches here, and the first built by the Spaniards in Luzon.

The church, as it stands now, is the third time that its Augustinian friars rebuilt it. First made of bamboo and nipa in 1607, it was brought down by a fire. The wooden structure that came after also burned down.

Besides being a place of worship, the ancient structure is also a Museum and Cultural Center filled with centuries-old artifacts. A tour here includes a visit to the tomb of governor-general de Legazpi, who is buried within the holy grounds. You can also pay your respects to renowned Filipino painter Juan Luna, whose remains are kept in the church’s columbary.

Immerse in Spanish architecture at the most photographed streets of Vigan

Calle Crisologo at night.
Slices of pre-colonial Spanish rule also exist outside of our country’s capital, and one notable example of this is Vigan in the northwestern province of Ilocos Sur. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the 400-year-old Ilocano city is renowned for its well-kept ancestral homes and buildings, and is and one of CNN’s “most picturesque towns in Asia.”

Much of the immaculate architecture here can be found near Plaza Salcedo, which is named after Vigan’s founder, the Spanish conquistador Juan de Salcedo.

From there, you can easily explore the rest of the picture-perfect location on foot, beginning with St. Paul’s Cathedral across the street. Built in 1800, the baroque church stands on the same spot where de Salcedo established the community’s first wood and thatch chapel in the 16th century.

About five minutes away is Calle Crisologo, the city’s most photographed street and most popular tourist attraction. Like a postcard come to life, the thoroughfare is lined with the homes of Vigan families who rose to prominence in the town’s heydays as a trading hub.

You can easily walk around the cobblestoned stretch, but a kalesa ride, which costs Php150 an hour, might give you a more immersive experience. Many of Crisologo’s antique residences have been converted into museums, hotels, souvenir shops, and restaurants, allowing you to go on a deep dive of the Vigan’s history.

Vigan only allows pre-booked tours with accredited agencies and operators. We suggest booking your accommodations in advance as well to ensure a smooth and safe trip to and around the Ilocano capital.

Look far and wide from the Memorial Cross observation deck at Bataan’s Shrine of Valor

Photo courtesy of the Department of Tourism.

The United States of America also occupied our country, but just for a fraction of time than the Spaniards’ centuries-old rule. While the Americans still met fierce opposition, their 48-year-old occupation did allow for gradual independence and the formation of a commonwealth government.

This US-Philippine alliance was strengthened by the events of World War II, which saw American Armed Forces fight alongside Filipino soldiers against Japanese invaders. The months-long battle came to a head in Bataan in Northern Luzon, where the allied troops surrendered.

Today, the Shrine of Valor stands near the peak of Mt. Samat, the US’s last stronghold on the island, in remembrance of the fallen heroes who bravely defended the country’s freedom.

Inaugurated in 1970, the 72-hectare Shrine consists of a Colonnade decked with sculptures, murals, and stained glass displays that depict the Battle of Bataan. Behind this marble hall stands the Memorial Cross, a 92-meter-high structure of reinforced steel and concrete that stands watch over the province.

Its base is clad with an 11-meter-tall relief designed by our National Artist Napoleon Abueva, which illustrates historical events and icons like Jose Rizal and Datu Lapu-Lapu. You can ride an elevator up to an observation deck on the Cross’s 30-meter-wide arms that opens to 360-degree views of the peninsula and nearby Corregidor Island and Manila Bay.

The Shrine currently only accommodates pre-booked visits. You can reserve your slots at least two days before your intended travel date.

Appreciate Mindanao’s cultural landscape on the highest zipline in Southeast Asia

Lake Sebu. Photo courtesy of the Department of Tourism.

First and foremost, our country is a land of diverse ethnicities. Before the Spaniards came, a variety of indigenous tribes thrived across the archipelago. Many of these groups were able to repel these would-be foreign conquerors and, as a result, managed to uphold their own values and traditions until today.

The island of Mindanao, in particular, is home to a total of 18 indigenous tribes. Four of them—the T’boli, Ubo, Tiruray, and Manobo—continue to flourish in the municipality of Lake Sebu in South Cotabato.

These groups have resided in this part of the country for centuries, with the T’boli making up more than half of its population. They still live the way their ancestors did, relying on fishing and agriculture for livelihood, and, because of their careful cultivation of the land, UNESCO has recognized the region of Lake Sebu as a cultural landscape.

Once travel restrictions are lifted, you can take a trip down to the Mindanaoan province to visit the museums and centers around the area. You can also observe the tribe’s customs and rituals including musical performances as well as the complex process of T’nalak weaving.

One of these places, the Lake Sebu School of Living Tradition (LST), also serves as a homestay for visitors. While there, you can don traditional T’boli garb for Php200 (women) and Php150 (men).

At Lake Sebu, you can also trek through the “Seven Falls” via hiking trails. But we highly recommend viewing it on the highest zipline in Southeast Asia, a sweeping ride that is 600 feet above the ground.

Only four out of the seven falls can be seen from this point of view, while the rest is only accessible on foot. But at Php300 to Php350 for a two-way ride, it’s an experience you shouldn’t miss.

Have a remote travel experience in the secluded village of Batad

Batad Rice Field, Banaue, Ifugao. Photo courtesy of the Jubran Elias.

Next to Mindanao, Northern Luzon has the second highest concentration of indigenous cultures in the Philippines. The mountainous Cordillera province is home to seven major ethnic groups—the Tinggian, Isneg, Kalinga, Kankana-ey, Ibaloy, Ifugao, and Bontok—collectively known as Igorots, from the Spanish word Igorrotes which means “of the hill or mountain.”

These highland tribes are farmers, distinguished for their ingenious tradition of agricultural terracing. This is the method behind our world-famous, and highly photographable rice terraces.

Not many may know but there are in fact more than 48 of these farming landscape wonders in the Igorot mountains, some even dating back 2,000 years. Five of them are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Batad, Bangaan, Mayoyao, Hungudan, and Nagadacan Rice Terraces.

The Banaue Rice Terraces, actually, is not included in this list because of the abundance of contemporary structures in its area. But it remains to be one of the top tourist spots in our country and is considered a National Cultural Treasure.

There are a lot of activities to keep you occupied at Banaue. Apart from hiking up the mountain to observe the terraces from different vantage points, you can drop by the Banaue Museum as well as the Tam-An Village to observe the daily life of an Ifugao tribe.

But if it’s a unique and completely remote travel experience that you’re after, make a beeline for Batad. To get to this secluded village, you’ll need to take another 45-minute jeepney ride from Banaue town proper to a drop off point called the Saddle. From there, you’ll have to trek another 20 minutes until you reach your destination.

Despite its isolation, Batad has several affordable options for accommodation in the area, including homestays in traditional Ifugao huts. In terms of getting around, the area’s unspoiled landscapes mean you’ll have to go on long hikes to visit sites. But it’s worth it for the breathtaking views.

After trekking up the rice terraces, you can venture out to Tappiya Falls for a swim, or head out to Awa View Deck up in the mountains for unparalleled panoramas. You can explore the area on your own, but there are local guides you can hire for around Php600 (max of four people) to tour you around.

Right now, travel to the Cordillera province has been limited in line with nationwide safety protocols. But locals will be happy to welcome visitors back once travel restrictions ease up.

Appreciate cave systems and limestone cliffs on a paddle boat at the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River Park

Photo courtesy of the Department of Tourism.

Palawan’s Puerto Princesa Subterranean River Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the “New 7 Wonders of Nature.”

The main draw at this 22-hectare ecotourist spot is the 8.2km long underground river that flows directly into the sea. About 4.3km, or half of the whole route, can be explored aboard a paddle boat that will take you to see intricate cave systems and limestone cliffs.

This largely landscape contains a mountain-to-sea ecosystem that protects Palawan’s rainforests. It also provides critical habitat for a variety of flora and fauna, many of which are endemic to the region.

You’ll likely catch some of the park’s four-legged, furry, or winged residents before you enter the underground river. These include crab-eating monkeys, monitor lizards, bats, and flocks of birds that wander the area.

Just off Puerto Princesa town proper, the park usually only allows a limited number of tourists to enter per day so it’s best to book your visit ahead. Right now it still remains closed due to COVID restrictions.

But when things pick up again, you might want to check out packages online or through your accommodation, which usually start at Php2,000. If you prefer to explore on your own, you’ll need to secure a tour permit from their office in Puerto Princesa’s City Coliseum before you can travel to Sabang Village. You’ll also need to pay a Php500 environmental fee upon arrival at the park.

Travel safely!

All of these tourist destinations have health and safety protocols in place to protect locals and visitors alike. Everyone is expected to comply by wearing face masks, regularly washing their hands, and practicing physical distancing.

To check out up-to-date information regarding local destinations that are open and the safety protocols and requirements needed for each location, visit www.philippines.travel/safetrip or download the Travel Philippines app at app.philippines.travel or the Google Playstore.

According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), it’s why world heritage sites such as the Banks of the Seine in Paris, the Statue of Liberty in New York, the Acropolis in Athens, and the Great Wall of China attract many tourists from all over the world.

In the Philippines, we have nine properties in the UNESCO World Heritage List of our own. (Four of these properties, however, are grouped under one name, Baroque Churches of the Philippines.)

These sites are “of outstanding universal value” and meet at least one out of 10 selection criteria. They are as follows:

Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras (Cordillera Administrative Region)

Inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1995, the Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras showcase Ifugao industry. It is one of the few places in the country that show no evidence of being influenced by colonial cultures.

UNESCO describes it as a living cultural landscape of unparalleled beauty “epitomizing the absolute blending of the physical, socio-cultural, economic, religious, and political environment.”

The entire landscape itself is quite extensive, and are located in the remote corners of the Cordillera mountain range. But UNESCO only has its most intact and impressive clusters inscribed on its list:

(1) the Nagacadan cluster in the municipality of Kiangan, which appears as two distinct ascending rows of terraces bisected by a river; (2) the Hungduan cluster, which resembles a spider web; (3) the central Mayoyao cluster, where the terraces are woven into traditional farmers’ houses and granaries; (4) the Bangaan cluster that backdrops a typical Ifugao traditional village; and (5) the Batad cluster, which features amphitheater-like semi-circular terraces with a village at its base.

The most popular to tourists are the Bangaan and Batad clusters in Banaue. Traveling to these terraces requires hiking or trekking, and the best months to visit are from June to July, or October to November.

Trip Quest Travel and Tours offers a two day-one Night Banaue Package, which includes a hike to the Batad cluster and Tappiyah Falls.
Paoay Church (Ilocos Norte, Region I)

Among the country’s properties inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List is called the Baroque Churches of the Philippines. A group of four centuries-old churches, their style of building and design was adapted to the physical conditions in the country.

Inscribed in 1993, the UNESCO cites the four churches as outstanding examples of the Philippine interpretation of the Baroque style. They “represent the fusion of European church design and construction with local materials and decorative motifs to form a new church-building tradition.”

One of the properties is the Church of San Agustín in Paoay, Ilocos Norte. More commonly known as Paoay Church, it looms large because of its 24 enormous buttresses on all sides—a feature that makes it earthquake-proof.

Take a trip back in time at Calle Crisologo, which is part of the Historic City of Vigan.
Its facade is a mix of gothic and baroque, a fusion of Spanish, Chinese, and Filipino influences. The niches on top of the pillars and buttresses suggest Javanese influence.

To the right of the church is a three-story belltower made of coral stone. It used to be the Katipuneros’ observation post during the revolt against the Spaniards and by the Filipino guerillas during World War II.

Historic City of Vigan (Ilocos Sur, Region I)

Vigan was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999 for its unique culture and townscape. It is described as “the most intact example in Asia of a planned Spanish colonial town, established in the 16th century.”

Its main architecture is Hispanic but infused with Chinese, Ilocano, and Filipino elements, which is unique to the region. In 2014, Vigan was also selected as one of the New 7 Wonder Cities of the World.

The whole of Vigan was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Site covering 28.88 square kilometers, three major plazas—Plaza Salcedo, Plaza Burgos, and Plaza Trese Martires—and a total of 246 ancestral houses and structures.

Its major attraction is Calle Crisologo, which is lined with cobblestone and preserved ancestral houses of affluent Filipino-Chinese families. Located on the ground floor of these grand houses are shops that offer Vigan’s best products. These include crafts and delicacies like hand-woven abel textiles, and jewelry.

Some of the old houses have also been converted into restaurants and accommodations.

The Nuestra Señora dela Asuncion Church is another of the baroque churches that was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is more commonly known as the Santa Maria Church, located in the municipality of the same name in Ilocos Sur.

The construction of the church started in 1765. Its thick walls made of bricks and mortar were reinforced with huge buttresses. Beside it is a belfry that was also used as a watchtower in the Spanish colonial period.

The Sta. Maria Church in Ilocos Sur. Photo courtesy of the Department of Tourism.

The church is situated on top of a hill and can be reached through a stairway of 85 steps. The first thing you will notice on your way up is a relief of the Our Lady of Assumption atop a tree.

This is a retelling of the story of how the statue of the Virgin Mary would periodically disappear in its former location. It would then be found on a guava tree perched on the knoll where the church now stands. Once on top, you will have a sweeping view of the town.

When visiting the Santa Maria Church, consider including other nearby destinations in your itinerary. Happy Juanderer’s Ilocos Sur Adventourismo is a six to eight-hour day tour package that will bring you to the Santa Maria Church.

San Agustin Church (Manila)

Officially known as the Church of the Immaculate Conception of San Agustin, this is also included in UNESCO’s list of Baroque structures. It is situated inside the walled city of Intramuros in Manila.

The church made of adobe stones was completed in 1607. It used to have two bell towers, but the one on its right side collapsed during a strong earthquake and was permanently removed after.

The church was witness to many significant events in history, especially since Intramuros was the seat of political and religious power during colonial times. During the Battle of Manila in 1945, the church remained standing even as other structures in Intramuros were reduced to rubbles.

What sets it apart from the three other Baroque churches is its interior, particularly the intricate retablo or altars and the tromp l’oeil style paintings on the ceiling. The church also houses a museum of Spanish artifacts, statues, church ornaments, and paintings.

Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park (Palawan, Region IV-B)

The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is famous for its 8.2-kilometer-long underground river that goes through a limestone cave filled with stalactites and stalagmites. UNESCO even goes as far as saying that the experience of viewing the magnificent rock formations on a river cruise is “unequalled by any other similar experience elsewhere in the world.”

But there is more to this natural heritage that made it to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park (Palawan, Region IV-B)

The Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park was one of the first properties in the Philippines to be inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993.

Located in the center of the Sulu Sea, it covers a vast area of 96,828 hectares, including two coral atolls, the North and the South. It also has the Jessie Beazley Reef, a smaller coral structure about 20 kilometers north of the atolls. The property is considered part of Cagayancillo, a remote island municipality of Palawan inhabited mainly by fisherfolk.

UNESCO cites it as an “excellent example of pristine reefs with a high diversity of marine life,” with over 360 coral species, 600 species of fish, 11 species of sharks and rays, 13 species of dolphins and whales, and 100 species of birds. The North Islet serves as a nesting site both for birds and the green and hawksbill turtles, which are both endangered.

Tubbataha Reefs is popular with scuba divers, with its Delsan Wreck as a go-to dive site for many. Here, you will have the chance to meet several shark and ray species, such as white tip shark, tiger sharks, whale sharks, hammerheads, manta rays, devil rays, and eagle rays.

Diving here can be quite costly, however, and most sites are only recommended for seasoned or certified advanced open water divers. It is also only accessible to tourists between March and June when diving conditions are best, with clear skies, calm seas, and visibility between 30 and 45 meters.

The only way to reach Tubbataha is through a liveaboard and trips are usually between five and seven days. Liveaboard packages range from Php100,000 up to more Php200,000 per person. There are also other expenses, such as park fees, diving gear and equipment rental, travel and dive insurance, and flights to and from Palawan.

Discovery Palawan’s 7 Days – 6 Nights Tubbataha Package costs Php125,536/head for a standard twin room inclusive of all meals and snacks. The itinerary includes 3-4 dives per day for Days two to six to explore the various dive sites.

How to get there:

Take a plane from Manila to Puerto Princesa. Dive operators usually transport their guests from the airport to the pier, just minutes away, where their boat awaits.

It takes around 10 hours to get to the Park from Puerto Princesa. Depending on the speed of the vessel, dive boats leave in the afternoon or after dinner to arrive at Tubbataha by first light the next day.

Miagao Church (Iloilo, Region VI)

The last of the four baroque structures on the list is Miagao Church. It is officially known as the Church of Saint Thomas of Villanova.

Following the Baroque-Romanesque style, the church is found in the Municipality of Miagao in Iloilo. It sinks six meters deep into the ground with walls one-and-a-half meters thick and buttresses thrice thicker.

What makes it unique from the three other baroque churches in the UNESCO list is its façade that is almost like a retablo because of its intricate design.

Miagao Church in Iloilo.
The topmost part shows a relief sculpture of St. Christopher carrying the child Christ amidst coconut, papaya and guava shrubs; the center has a large stone image of St. Thomas of Villanova, the parish patron saint; and each side of the main entrance has carved life-size statues of Pope Pius VI and St. Henry of Bavaria.

It has two huge unequal bell towers directly attached to the main church. A prominent element inside the church is the gold-plated retablo.

A visit to Miagao Church is part of the itinerary in Iloilo and Countryside Tours. Through this tour, you can also discover other historical and cultural sites in the city, such as Calle Real Heritage District, Camiña Balay nga Bato, Molo Church, and Museo de Iloilo.

Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary (Davao Oriental, Region XI)

The latest property in the country to be included in the UNESCO Heritage List is the Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary in Davao Oriental.

It was inscribed in 2014 for representing a complete, substantially intact and highly diverse mountain ecosystem.
It is best known for its pygmy forest that covers its highest peak. This forest is composed of centuries-old trees—indigenous hardwood such as almaciga, cedar, lokinai, yakal, dapdap, and bitanghol—that were stunted to an average height of only 4.5 feet due to the mineral-rich volcanic soil. Other attractions in the property include the Hidden Garden, Tinagong Dagat, Twin Falls, and Black Mountain.

At the buffer zone area in San Isidro, there is the Mount Hamiguitan World Heritage Park. This is an interactive facility that showcases the wonders of the property.

It has an interpretation site, a natural science museum, research center and cabin, bird-watching viewdeck, a hanging bridge, a nature trail for leisure hiking, sunset viewdeck, and a cafe.

The Philippine Islands is home to many proud craftsmen and artisans–Filipinos who create world-class products using skills and tools that have been handed down through generations. In harmony with nature and with ingenuity, they use indigenous materials that abound in their communities. These treasures await travelers to the Philippines, as beautiful souvenirs that can be brought home along with memories of a relaxing getaway in this tropical paradise.

The Philippines Department of Tourism partners with the Department of Trade and Industry to support the local handicrafts businesses all over the country. Through this partnership, many local producers have been able to reach a wider customer base. Projects include seminars, trade fairs and expositions, along with souvenir stops at popular destinations. Together with creating travel circuits that are based on attractions in each region, the DOT also highlights artisanal products that can showcase the local talent and culture.

There are many native materials that are transformed into beautiful works of art by Filipino craftsmen. Here are some of the cool souvenirs that travelers can bring home from the Philippines.

Baguio’s woodcrafts

Woodworking in the uplands of the Cordillera Region ranges from utilitarian items used at home or in the fields, to ceremonial items used in community celebrations, and spiritual figures called Bulul that serve as house guardians that are passed on from generation to generation. Baguio’s public market and roadside stalls offer many choices of hand-carved wood items to fit your fancy and your luggage space – such as the infamous ‘barrel man’, or larger statues of warriors and animals such as eagles that can serve as a conversation piece in your home.

The Inabel of Ilocos

The practice of weaving cotton thread into fabric on a wooden loom used to be one of the household duties of many Ilocano women. The hardy Inabel or Abel Iloco, is a soft, simple, pliable fabric with varied unique patterns and designs that can be woven to be big enough for use as blankets, table runners, and even dress material. Some Inabel items that are available at souvenir shops such as the ones in Vigan, Ilocos Sur or even online are tea towels, blankets, shawls, bags, and even made-to-order apparel from young designers who are keen to use this sustainably made and sourced fabric.

Inabel or Abel Iloco.
Vigan’s Pagburnayan Clay Jars

Burnay is the Ilocano word for the brown clay pot used by Filipinos even before the Spanish arrived in the country. These earthen pottery pieces were used by early Filipinos as water containers because they help keep the water cool even on a hot day. They were also important household items as containers for salt and rice, or for vinegar, fermented fish paste, and they were vessels for items that were sold to the Chinese in the days of the sea trade. In Vigan, one can visit a pottery shop and learn how Burnay is made using carabao power to mix the mud, and have your own photo opportunity on the potter’s wheel. You can also purchase these thick and hardy jars to use as decorative pieces or planters at home.

Pagburnayan Clay Jars.
Cebu’s Guitars and Capiz Shells

Guitars that are handmade in Cebu are famous throughout the Philippines because they are durable, affordable, and of high-quality compared to the mass-produced ones in the market. The art of making guitars, which was introduced in the Spanish era, has been passed on through generations of local masters who make these musical instruments by painstakingly shaping the wood into the familiar hourglass shape. These are available at souvenir shops or at family-owned guitar stores, particularly in Lapu-Lapu City, have become local attractions for music lovers of all ages.

The Visayas is also where dainty Capiz shell art is a traditional handicraft industry. The translucent Capiz, which can still be found adorning windows of heritage homes or painted in the stained glass windows of churches, comes from the shell of a mollusk called the Windowpane Oyster. After the meat has been eaten, the shells are gathered to be used in handicrafts. Local artists use the shells to create magnificent décors such as complicated chandeliers, pretty wind chimes, beautiful floor lamps, or smaller stationery items that can be given away to friends and family back home.

Barako Coffee from Batangas

Barako is a Tagalog word that means ‘strong’ and that is a good descriptor for the brew that comes from the coffee beans grown particularly in Batangas and some parts of Cavite. The farmers take pride in their coffee plants, which have been cultivated in their region since the 1800s. Coffee experts describe the taste as woody and smoky with a hint of sweetness from its floral, fruity aroma. Its bold, intense flavor from Liberica beans has been translated into local coffeehouse favorites and even into cakes and pastries. A cup of coffee made from your souvenir bag of ground beans is a great way to perk up on a cold day.

Davao’s Malagos Chocolates

While growing cacao is an agricultural practice in many parts of the Philippines, Davao is hailed as the country’s Chocolate Capital and the entire Davao Region as the Cacao Capital of the Philippines. One of the frontrunners of the industry in the region is the award-winning Malagos Chocolates brand which uses high-quality beans from a sustainable source for a “tree to bar” chocolate journey. Its latest award was for its 100% Premium Unsweetened Chocolate that won four Golds and one Bronze at the 2020 World Drinking Chocolate Competition organized by the International Chocolate Awards.
Manila’s South Sea Pearls Shops

There are many high-end jewelry stores located at the malls selling a sundry of pearls and other gems. But for those who want to have the element of a bargain when they shop for their jewelry and accessories can visit the bazaars of Manila, where one can find an assortment of South Sea Pearls from Palawan and some parts of Mindanao sold at stalls beside cellphone accessories and rubber shoes. There, one can browse through their collections of luminous necklaces and dainty earrings while asking for the “final price” that the vendor can offer.

Davao Oriental’s Virgin Coconut Oil

Touted to have many health benefits, virgin coconut oil is produced from fresh or mature coconuts, without undergoing chemical refining, bleaching or deodorizing. VCO products that are available in the Philippines come in oil and capsule form or even as cosmetics. While coconuts grow abundantly all over the country, Davao Oriental is poised to become a big exporter of coconut products overseas, with 18 Virgin Coconut Oil processing centers set to rise within the year. Modern production at the processing plants such as the one of Oriental Golden Coco Inc., ensure high quality through multiple microfiltration processes for additional purity to result in products with that wonderful fresh coconut aroma and flavor in what is called the “purest and healthiest” form of coconut oil.

Cordillera’s Heirloom Rice

Heirloom rice varieties have been grown in the Cordillera Mountains for centuries, and studies have found that there could be about 500 traditional varieties of rice that are indigenous in the region and are mostly being planted for personal or family consumption through generations. So far, there have been 88 varieties that have been identified and studies have shown these to have higher nutritional content. Try this heirloom rice with your next meal and have it the Filipino way by eating with your hands for a more authentic experience.

The Philippines’ Alcoholic Drinks

Imbibe the spirit of the Philippines through its choice of alcoholic concoctions. A short story by the late Don Alejandro Roces who is a National Artist of the Philippines for Literature, cheekily says, “We Filipinos Are Mild Drinkers”. This is offset by the local distilled drinks such as Don Papa Rum, a premium aged single-island rum from the sugar cane fields at the foot of Mt. Kanglaon in the Visayas. Coconut Wine called Lambanog is another potent brew obtained from the distillation of naturally fermented coconut sap. Modern version of this celebratory drink now has added flavors. Travelers can bring this home to European countries if they are for personal consumption while restrictions in Muslim countries may apply.

Don Papa Rum.
Liliw, Laguna’s Native Slippers

The town of Liliw in Laguna is known for its slipper industry, with local artisans crafting the footwear from abaca which grows abundantly in the area. These comfortable and colorful house slippers are perfect for keeping your feet warm while relaxing at home and they make great handcrafted gifts – just make sure that the recipient gives you a coin in return as Philippine superstition says that if you don’t get one, you might get into a quarrel.

Photo courtesy of the Department of Tourism – Region IV-A.

Filipino Designer’s Modern Filipiniana

Young Filipino designers are rediscovering local woven fabrics and reimagining them for use as modern apparel in order to support traditional industries and local communities. While the National Dress of Barong Tagalog (long-sleeved embroidered formal shirts) for men and Baro’t Saya (that literally translates to blouse and skirt, made from fine pina cloth) for women are still worn on important occasions, designers such as the ones at Filip + Inna are coming up with stunning garments that make use of handmade woven material, beading, and embroidery that can be worn at the office or even at the beach. Bring home something old, something new with gorgeous designs that will make you stand out in a crowd.

More Treasures to Unbox

The Philippines is a haven for those who want to enjoy local culture through tangible items. Rattan is one of the indigenous materials that are used for traditional packaging, the leaves are dexterously woven into shopping bags called bayong and boxes that are used to store items in the home. Banig, or woven mats are another Filipino woven product, used for sleeping or as bags and home accents, while abaca bags are fashionable and summery all year long. Wooden utensils are utilitarian and decorative items, which can be found both on the dining table or if in their supersized form, hanging from the walls of the dining room. For those who want to try their hand at a little Filipino cooking, local brand Mama Sita offers condiments and sauces to help capture that local palette.

Travel safely!

All these tourist destinations have health and safety protocols in place to protect locals and visitors alike. Everyone is expected to comply by wearing face masks, regularly washing their hands, and practicing physical distancing.

To check out up-to-date information regarding local destinations that are open and the safety protocols and requirements needed for each location, you may visit philippines.travel/safetrip or download the Travel Philippines app at app.philippines.travel, Apple Store, or Google Playstore.

1. Cycling around Intramuros on a Bamboo Bike

Situated right in the heart of Manila, Intramuros is a popular day trip destination for history buffs and tourists who want to get to know the Philippine capital. And here’s an exciting way to do it: ride a bamboo bike. Bambike Ecotours offers a chance to explore the walled city’s old-town charm and its fascinating pieces of Philippine history in an eco-friendly way. These handmade bamboo bikes come in many options for a safe and comfortable ride, with Bambassadors acting as guides while touring the historic fortress city.

2. Zooming through Banaue’s Winding Roads on a Wooden Bike

If your next trip takes you to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras, you can fully immerse yourself in the region’s culture and explore its majestic sites through the local mode of transportation. Up in the mountains of Banaue, tourists can try out hand-carved wooden scooters that can reach up to speeds of 50 kilometers an hour. These bikes are a testament to the Ifugao’s wood carving skills and ingenuity, as they are made with scraps of wood and pieces from old rubber tires. This is an adrenaline-fueled way to enjoy a picturesque view of the centuries-old Banaue Rice Terraces, which their ancestors carved by hand on the mountainsides.

A person participating in a game using only Bamboo Stilts.
3. Test Your Balance on Bamboo Stilts in Cebu

Cebu is a scenic vacation destination that offers a plethora of fun things to do, from trips to historical monuments, island getaways and mountain retreats. It’s also the birthplace of Kadang-Kadang (Karang), an old Filipino game that involves walking—or rather, running—on bamboo stilts. This unique and thrilling activity was recognized as a traditional team sport under the Laro ng Lahi in 1969, but it is considered a childhood game through generations. Kadang-Kadang is played by locals in communities all across the island, and tourists can try out their skills on balance and speed by hopping on a pair of stilts and participating in a team race that runs (or wobbles) for 100 meters. It also has the added benefit of letting you see the beautiful city from a slightly higher point of view.

Intrepid adventurers can get off the beaten path and explore the rugged terrains of Pampanga, once flowing with lahar from Mt. Pinatubo. Photo courtesy of the Department of Tourism.

4. Go Off-Road on a Lahar Adventure in Pampanga

Pampanga offers more than just a delectable taste of Philippine cuisine. This not-so-hidden gem also has one-of-a-kind outdoor activities that are must-tries for intrepid travelers. You can, for instance, go on an off-road tour of the streams and sandy terrain of the province’s lahar trails. Locals have ingeniously and admiringly taken these remnants of the devastating Mount Pinatubo eruption of 1991 and turned it into a destination for extreme sports enthusiasts. There are a number of travel operators that offer guided tours on 4×4 ATVs or motorcycles through this unique landscape. Visitors can pre-book via call or through their websites.

A tourist enjoys a traditional Kawa bath in Rizal.
5. Relax in a Kawa bath in Antique

The Kawa or giant cauldron is typically used for cooking fiesta fare in the Philippines, but in Antique, it provides a rustic and relaxing experience. The mountainside resorts welcome visitors after a trek in the woods of Tibiao in Antique with a refreshing hot bath in a kawa, with water heated over a wood fire and scented with aromatic herbs and flowers. Those who want to experience another kind of therapy can visit the Tibiao Fish Spa, where guests can dip their feet in a pond for fish to nibble on and exfoliate.

Direct flights from Clark International Airport in Pampanga to Antique Airport in San Jose de Buenavista are the fastest way to travel to Antique and enjoy this one-of-a-kind bathing experience. If you’re coming from Manila, you can also take a flight from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport to either the Iloilo International Airport, Kalibo International Airport, or Caticlan Airport, all of which are a two- to three-hour bus ride away from Antique.

The rare Philippine Eagle can be found in any of the conservation sites in Davao. Photo by Rhonson Ng courtesy of the Department of Tourism.

6. Visit the Philippine Eagle in Davao

The Philippine Eagle is regarded as the Philippines National Bird. It is the largest of the extant eagles in the world in terms of length and wing surface, and it is now considered critically endangered. This is why it is protected in sanctuaries such as the Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary in Davao. Mount Hamiguitan is a UNESCO Protected Highland Nature Reserve and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to a diverse range of plant and animal species. A somewhat challenging trek is rewarded by a treasure trove of biodiverse sightings, including a chance to watch for the majestic Philippine Eagle in flight. Those who would rather study the area’s biodiversity indoors can visit the natural science museum that can be found on the premises. For a quick glimpse of the eagles, guests may also opt to visit Philippine Eagle Center, a private sector-managed rainforest in Davao City that shelters and breeds Philippine Eagles in captivity.

8. Organic Green Tour (OGT) Circuit

This circuit traces the Philippine food roots through a combination of organic farm tours and traditional meals that use the freshly harvested produce. The tour runs through the Baguio-La Trinidad-Itogon-Sablan-Tuba-Tublay (BLISTT) area with two farm tourism destinations, namely the Benguet Agro-Eco Farm in Sablan and the UM-A Farm in Tuba. Among the activities are pick-and-pay and the opportunity to partake in a traditional community celebration hosted by the farmers held around a warm bonfire amid fresh mountain air.

As countries gradually ease global travel restrictions, the Philippines ramps up its tourism recovery efforts, bringing it one step closer to welcoming international travelers again.

The island nation’s lead tourism agency is taking this opportunity to innovate further and develop its destinations, ensuring safe, more fun, and sustainable tourism for both local and foreign visitors. The Philippines recently unveiled its ‘More Fun Awaits’ campaign highlighting new tourism products and packages to explore, each with its own distinct set of adventures.

Plan your trip

With new and improved local destinations equipped with comprehensive safety protocols and procedures, the Philippines is more than ready to provide a safe and pleasant experience for visitors. Travelers may enjoy a range of adventures from north to south, which are now more accessible thanks to new and upgraded infrastructure such as regional airports and roads that connect tourists to the country’s gorgeous islands and their unique experiences.

Travelers may select from a range of destinations in the Philippines with various activities and tourism circuits to enjoy. The beautiful beaches lead to an underwater paradise, teeming with colors from diverse marine life. On land, the mountain ranges beckon to explorers with lush forests and trails that lead to breathtaking waterfalls and rapids. All of these can be experienced with a hearty serving of local cuisines from hosts, home cooks, and chefs, who will be the first to ask the quintessential Filipino greeting, “Have you eaten?”

Get ready to cross these places off your vacation bucket list on your next trip to this tropical paradise:

Relish the seascape: Powdery white sands, crystal-clear seas, and unspoiled natural resources characterize the beaches of the Calaguas group of islands in Camarines Norte. These lovely surroundings provide the ideal backdrop for spectacular sunsets and quiet nights under the stars.

Reconnect with nature: The Philippines has a diverse range of ecological assets. The Turtle Project in La Union, the Barobaybay Mangrove Ecopark and Marine Conservation in Northern Samar and bird watching tour in Ilocos Norte all have indigenous flora and fauna on exhibit. The scenic mountain environment of Baguio encourages visitors to wander around its public parks or harvest strawberries in neighboring La Trinidad.

Discover history and culture: The Philippines is a nation steeped in culture and history. And there are tourism sites that connect visitors to its heritage. Cebu City, the country’s oldest city, is home to many artifacts from its illustrious past, including the 500-year-old statue of the Sto. Nino de Cebu, which was given as a baptismal gift to the local chief’s wife by the first Spanish explorers headed by Portuguese Ferdinand Magellan.

Another enjoyable activity is touring the country on two wheels. The MoTOURismo Pilgrimage Caravan is designed to encourage motorbike enthusiasts to explore Cagayan Region’s open roads, with a scenic itinerary that travels through Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Isabela, and Cagayan and culminates at the magnificent Pagudpud Aquaduct in Ilocos Norte. In Davao, visitors may ride a bike suspended mid-air or experience the sky swing at the Eden Nature Park and Mountain Resort.

Being an archipelagic state, the Philippines has direct and easy access to seafood. Tropical fruits are also abundant all year due to the number of countryside farms. Eco and agro excursions are offered to take visitors to the source of food production, from mangroves and fishing villages on the islands to farms that cultivate climate-adapted local products.

One does not have to travel far to enjoy a taste of the Philippines’ culinary masterpieces. Local chefs expertly represent a wide range of regional cuisines at many of Manila’s exquisite restaurants, transforming the city into a global gastronomic paradise. On the other hand, culinary excursions in Bohol are ideal for tourists who want to sample traditional Filipino farm-to-table cuisine. It includes a trip to a bee farm, strawberry field, mushroom house, and a floating lunch buffet on a Loboc Riverboat ride where guests are encouraged to eat Filipino-style with their hands.

Ready for the world

As travel resumes in the new normal, the Philippines’ Department of Tourism (DOT) is preparing to welcome visitors once again, revealing its plans through the #MoreFunAwaits campaign.

Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat says, “We want to show our preparations for travelers, including newly-developed circuits with new exciting activities, destinations, and tourist attractions that have been developed in our regions. Through this campaign, we are also showing that the safety and well-being of tourists are our priority. Our tourism workers are well trained in enhanced health and hygiene protocols, and tourism establishments have also implemented safeguards in their premises to protect their guests and employees.”

The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) has recognized the DOT with a SafeTravels Stamp for its implementation of “global standardized health and hygiene standards” that will guarantee safe travel during the COVID-19 pandemic. SafeTravels is the council’s seal of approval certifying compliance with its global health standards to allow for safe travels.

Hotels, airlines, restaurants, tour operators, attractions, transportation, and airports will be able to use the stamp as proof that they conform to the WTTC’s health and safety standards. The WTTC is an international association that represents leaders in the worldwide travel and tourism sector.

As a result, the DOT has stepped up accreditation, conducting comprehensive inspections and assessments to guarantee that only businesses certified by the DOT are permitted to operate, and welcome visitors provided they conform to globally recognized health, safety, and hygiene standards.

The Philippine government’s Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) is continuously upgrading its procedures to ensure the safety of Filipinos and foreign visitors traveling to the country.

The Clark International Airport in Pampanga

In Pampanga, the new terminal in Clark International Airport was also recently opened. Inspired by the slopes of Mt. Arayat and the Filipino Christmas lantern, the new terminal provides fast, safe, and efficient air travel services such as contactless self-check-in and bag drop, advanced docking guidance system, and even contactless ordering for pre-flight dining. As the “gateway to the North,” it will help boost tourism recovery by expanding connectivity to various local destinations.
