<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There is more to the Philippine surfing scene than Siargao’s summer swells or Baler’s gigantic waves. The country has over 7,641 islands located in the Western Pacific, and with it many spots that could be deemed as a surfer’s paradise.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Some of the most underrated surfing spots can be seen in the Bicol Region, which is filled with beaches, big waves, and breathtaking views. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Here are but a few choice surfing spots to visit when in Camarines Norte, Sorsogon, and Catanduanes. </span></p>
<p><strong>Bagasbas Beach, Camarines Norte </strong></p>
<figure id="attachment_3440" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-3440" style="width: 1920px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img class="size-full wp-image-3440" src="https://www.7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/PLYGRND-00456-scaled.jpg" alt="" width="1920" height="1280" srcset="https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/PLYGRND-00456-scaled.jpg 1920w, https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/PLYGRND-00456-300x200.jpg 300w, https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/PLYGRND-00456-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/PLYGRND-00456-768x512.jpg 768w, https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/PLYGRND-00456-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/PLYGRND-00456-2048x1365.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-3440" class="wp-caption-text">Bagasbas Beach is a paradise for surfers of all ages. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Barangay Bagasbas in Daet used to be a vast expanse of rice fields before it became known as the Surfing Capital of Bicol. </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Bagas</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> means “rice” in Bicolano.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Bagasbas Beach, on the other hand, is a 5km stretch of gray-sand coast. Its seabed of pure sand makes it safe for beginners, and its expansive shores ensure that there is enough space for surfers to navigate the waves.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Despite being a public beach, the area is also well-maintained by Daet’s municipal office and volunteer groups. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When Lola Rosario “Sayong” Escandor needed people to guard her coconut trees sometime in 2009, she commissioned the help of local surfers. She allowed them to practice in her beach lot in exchange. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Out of gratitude, these surfers treated the ocean that was entrusted to them as their home and vowed to keep it pristine. Today, this group managed to grow into a community of environmental preservation and responsible tourism advocates.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Lola Sayong Eco-SurFarm is an eco-friendly campground and accommodation site managed by the local community of Gubat, Sorsogon. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This 5km surf camp implements strict rules for visitors: no partying, no smoking, no drinking, no bonfire, no speakers, and no unnecessary noise at 10 P.M., and no single-use plastics. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Any profit from the camp is used to develop and support educational programs for Gubat’s out-of-school youth. Through their ‘No school no surf’ policy, the community encourages children who want to learn surfing to attend school. The kids are provided educational assistance on academic projects as well as lodging. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The local community also protects sea turtles through their Conserve Pawikan Program, where they free </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">pawikans</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> trapped in the local fisherfolks’ nets to the ocean in exchange of rice or a cash allowance. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Aside from surfing, kayaking, night snorkeling, fishing, mangrove walk, and virtual farming are just some of the activities visitors can do here. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If Siargao has “Cloud 9,” Catanduanes has “Majestic” waves for its long-barrel surfs that break on Puraran’s reef in Baras. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This surf spot with cream-tinted shores became popular after photographer Warren Bolster featured it in the California-based </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Surfer Magazine </span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">in 1980. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Since then, enthusiasts from all over the world travel to Puraran for its waves. This made it the first tourist destination in the province. Prior to the pandemic, local and international surfing competitions were held here annually.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Beginners are also welcome to test their mettle on the calmer side of this 5km beach. Behind the picturesque coves and rock formations are smaller waves newbies can practice on. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">And since not a lot of people go to this side of the country yet, signing up for lessons does not involve a long waiting time.  </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Catanduanes went by different nicknames to define its identity as a province. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In the 1950s, when a tribal group called Cobos</span> <span style="font-weight: 400;">used to inhabit the land, it was briefly referred to as “Isla de Cobos” by the Spanish conquistadores. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It also went by the alias “Land of the Howling Winds” due to the strong monsoons that frequent the province. Its location lies in the country’s typhoon belt and is usually where the eye of the storm lands. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Despite several calamities, Catanduanon’s exemplify unwavering resilience and a delightful disposition. For this, they earned the moniker “The Happy Island.” This is the name they have been using since 2013.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In April 2022, the island province was also officially declared as the “Abaca Capital of the Philippines.” Aside from being the main source of the country’s abaca supply, Provincial Tourism Officer Carmel Bonifacio-Garcia says it’s a fitting name to the province because “just like abaca, the people of Catanduanes have tensile strength that has been tested through time.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But no matter what name you decide to call it, this offshore island of the Bicol Peninsula is a destination worthy of a visit—and multiple returns, too! Here’s a sample itinerary for a 4D3N (four days, three nights) trip. </span></p>
<p><b>Day 1: An enchanting, majestic day </b></p>

<p><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Nahulugan </span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">refers to “the spot where something fell” in Filipino. Since then, waters suddenly cascaded and formed this multilevel attraction. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Families who bond over inspiring stories of the past and good food will find a home at Casa Simeon in Bacacay. It was built in 1920 by husband-and-wife Simeon and Beatrice Alparce.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This century-old </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">bahay na bato</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> was restored by their grandson Enrico Alparce Calleja into a specialty lodging. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The old house remained habitable over the years and defied the ravages of war, typhoons, and volcanic eruptions. Its architectural design is fortified with concrete stones and first-class wood that’s meant to withstand time. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">They also have an in-house restaurant that serves Bicolano cuisines from the family’s heirloom recipes.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While you’re here, don’t forget to say hi to the casa’s resident dog, Bingo. He usually hangs out in the kitchen.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When local photographer Ferdinand Buenavides Ocol explored Catanduanes in 2016, he discovered natural rock formations and beaches that are now collectively called the Carorian Wonders. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This island-hopping circuit takes you to six destinations: Carorian Beach, Patag Islet, Seaside Waterfalls, Japanese Kaiden, Poseidon Rock and Lagoon, and Pinta Beach. Each stop comes with a historical or mystical story that adds to its charm. </span></p>
<p><b>The Carorian Wonders Adventure </b></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The adventure starts at </span><b>Carorian Beach</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">. A manmade bamboo bridge will lead you to the jump-off point where you’ll be greeted by the friendly members of the Carorian Wonders Community Guide Association (CaWCoGA). </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There’s an entrance fee of Php50 per person, and you can rent a cottage for Php200 only. Overnight camping is allowed as long as you bring your own tent. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Island hopping packages for groups of different sizes are available: Php2500 for six people, Php3,000 for eight, and Php4,000 for 10. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The first stop is the </span><b>Patag Islet</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">. As its name suggests, this wonder is a stack of flat rock formations. A wide flat ground where you can enjoy a picnic right in the middle of the sea is surrounded by black boulders shaped like a trapped ship. There’s also a lagoon where you can enjoy a swim in the turquoise waters of the Pacific. </span></p>
<figure id="attachment_3491" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-3491" style="width: 1280px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img class="size-full wp-image-3491" src="https://www.7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/PLYGRND-301467-scaled.jpg" alt="" width="1280" height="1920" srcset="https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/PLYGRND-301467-scaled.jpg 1280w, https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/PLYGRND-301467-200x300.jpg 200w, https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/PLYGRND-301467-683x1024.jpg 683w, https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/PLYGRND-301467-768x1152.jpg 768w, https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/PLYGRND-301467-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/PLYGRND-301467-1365x2048.jpg 1365w" sizes="(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-3491" class="wp-caption-text">The Carorian Seaside Falls only reveals its beauty to a select few. Photo courtesy of the Department of Tourism.</figcaption></figure>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Second stop: </span><b>Carorian Seaside Falls</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">. Locals believe that there’s a mystic wonder that surrounds this low waterfalls. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Some days, it hides from visitors and only lets out tiny streaks of water, just like how the Mayon Volcano eludes its admirers by covering itself with clouds. Some days, it appears in its full glory with strong cascades that go straight into its lagoon. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If the waves are not too strong, the tour takes you to the </span><b>Japanese Kaidan</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">. It’s a manmade staircase that faces the sea and takes you to the path leading to the Japanese garrison. (“Kaidan” means “stairs” in Japanese.)</span></p>
<figure id="attachment_3487" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-3487" style="width: 1920px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img class="size-full wp-image-3487" src="https://www.7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/PLYGRND-0668-scaled.jpg" alt="" width="1920" height="1440" srcset="https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/PLYGRND-0668-scaled.jpg 1920w, https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/PLYGRND-0668-300x225.jpg 300w, https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/PLYGRND-0668-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/PLYGRND-0668-768x576.jpg 768w, https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/PLYGRND-0668-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/PLYGRND-0668-2048x1536.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-3487" class="wp-caption-text">Say hello to Poseidon and enjoy swimming in his lagoon. Photo courtesy of the Department of Tourism.</figcaption></figure>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The fourth stop is the main attraction, the </span><b>Poseidon Rock and Lagoon</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">. This natural rock formation is famous for looking like the Greek god of the sea. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It’s an imposing structure that seemingly watches over the ocean. Powder white rocks that make it look even more majestic. Just beside the Poseidon Rock, there’s a lagoon where the water is calm and safe for lounging and swimming.</span></p>
<figure id="attachment_3488" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-3488" style="width: 1920px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img class="size-full wp-image-3488" src="https://www.7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/PLYGRND-07802-scaled.jpg" alt="" width="1920" height="1185" srcset="https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/PLYGRND-07802-scaled.jpg 1920w, https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/PLYGRND-07802-300x185.jpg 300w, https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/PLYGRND-07802-1024x632.jpg 1024w, https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/PLYGRND-07802-768x474.jpg 768w, https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/PLYGRND-07802-1536x948.jpg 1536w, https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/PLYGRND-07802-2048x1264.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-3488" class="wp-caption-text">Lounge at the fine, white sand of the historic Pinta Beach. Photo courtesy of the Department of Tourism.</figcaption></figure>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Last stop: </span><b>Pinta Beach</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">. This historic beach is believed to be where Father Diego de Herrera, one of the first five Agustinians in the Philippines, got stranded when his ship broke down at the Nagngangang Buwaya Point. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Here, he painted a cross to commemorate his stay and symbolize his faith. This is how the beach got its name.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The entire Carorian Wonders Adventure can be done in half a day. But because not a lot of people have discovered this gem yet, tourists are still allowed to stay at the Carorian Beach all day, enjoy snorkeling, and stargaze at night</span></p>
<p><b>Must-Try Carorian Dishes</b></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Aside from taking care of the tour operations, the CaWCoGA accepts advance food orders for those who want to try authentic Carorian food.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">They charge Php300 per dish plus the cost of ingredients. You can bring your own ingredients too and ask them to cook for you.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">One of the Carorian specialties to try is </span><b>taktakun</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">. </span></p>
<figure id="attachment_3489" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-3489" style="width: 1920px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img class="size-full wp-image-3489" src="https://www.7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/PLYGRND-08220-scaled.jpg" alt="" width="1920" height="1280" srcset="https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/PLYGRND-08220-scaled.jpg 1920w, https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/PLYGRND-08220-300x200.jpg 300w, https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/PLYGRND-08220-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/PLYGRND-08220-768x512.jpg 768w, https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/PLYGRND-08220-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/PLYGRND-08220-2048x1365.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-3489" class="wp-caption-text">Taktakun, one of Carorian’s specialty dishes. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Tabugok</span> <span style="font-weight: 400;">is the local term for red octopus and is also the main ingredient of this specialty dish. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“I used to be a professional handicraft man. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Not to be confused by the </span><a href="https://www.foxyfolksy.com/how-to-make-latik-toasted-coconut-milk-curd/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">toasted coconut curds</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> used as garnish in the northern parts of Luzon, Catanduanon Latik refers to rice cakes with caramelized coconut milk. It’s a common breakfast food and snack in Catanduanes.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">According to the 70-year-old chef, Catanduanons have been making latik even before he started mass producing in 1997. “But there was no study,” he says. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“With the help of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), I was able to standardize the process of making rice cakes based on research,” the chef says. “It took me a series of trial and errors for five years before I got the right recipe.” </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It was latik that fulfilled his dreams of building his own home. A part of this home was converted into a factory for continuous production. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Twenty-five years later, the business is still thriving. He manages production and operations of his namesake brand, Chef Impling Delicacies, with his son Miko Mendoza.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Miko, 29 years old, has been involved in </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">paglalatik </span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">(</span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">latik</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">-making) since he was in high school.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“I think I was 11 or 12 years old when I started helping my </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">tatay</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (father) in the kitchen,” he recalls. “I used to be the one to squeeze the milk out of the coconut.” </span></p>
<figure id="attachment_4008" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-4008" style="width: 1346px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img class="size-full wp-image-4008" src="https://www.7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/PLYGRND-08633-scaled.jpg" alt="" width="1346" height="1920" srcset="https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/PLYGRND-08633-scaled.jpg 1346w, https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/PLYGRND-08633-210x300.jpg 210w, https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/PLYGRND-08633-718x1024.jpg 718w, https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/PLYGRND-08633-768x1096.jpg 768w, https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/PLYGRND-08633-1077x1536.jpg 1077w, https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/PLYGRND-08633-1435x2048.jpg 1435w" sizes="(max-width: 1346px) 100vw, 1346px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-4008" class="wp-caption-text">Miko Mendoza, son of Chef Impling. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Now, Miko already manages their full operations, balancing his job as a public school teacher in the day and an entrepreneur at night.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As an educator, Miko acknowledges the impact of their business to the lives of their employees.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Almost all of our employees are working students. Some have already graduated, and some are graduating this year,” he proudly shares. “Latik helped their families as much as it helped ours.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Chef Impling and Miko share the same dream of expanding their business and having outlet stores in Manila. </span></p>
<p><b>The Art of Paglalatik </b></p>

Photo by Playground Films courtesy of the Department of Tourism.</figcaption></figure>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Chef Impling describes </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">paglalatik</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> as a creative work. “It takes patience, and you need to constantly try to find a new technique,” he says. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The first step to making latik is to find a good kind of </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">malagkit </span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">(glutinous rice). Then, it has to be washed thoroughly and drained properly to prolong its shelf life.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Afterwards, malunggay extract should be added. Chef Impling says that the correct measurement should be two shots of extract for every 5 kilos of </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">malagkit</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">An alternative to malunggay can be chili leaves. But due to short supply of the latter, they stick with the former. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“In terms of taste, chili defeats malunggay. But in terms of nutrients, malunggay wins without a doubt,” the chef says. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The last step is to add salt to the rice cake mixture. </span></p>
<figure id="attachment_4006" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-4006" style="width: 1920px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img class="size-full wp-image-4006" src="https://www.7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/PLYGRND-08568-scaled.jpg" alt="" width="1920" height="1280" srcset="https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/PLYGRND-08568-scaled.jpg 1920w, https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/PLYGRND-08568-300x200.jpg 300w, https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/PLYGRND-08568-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/PLYGRND-08568-768x512.jpg 768w, https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/PLYGRND-08568-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://7641islands.ph/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/PLYGRND-08568-2048x1365.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-4006" class="wp-caption-text">A freshly-wrapped batch of rice cakes. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">What completes this delicacy is the caramelized sauce that comes as a dip or a topping. It is made from thick coconut milk and sugar, and is packed in small sachets. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Making one batch of latik usually takes half of the day. Their daily production depends on the number of orders. </span></p>
